Android:Sprint's Update on Android 2.1

Posted by tooner
A while back we announced our plans to update our Android devices to 2.1 in the first half of 2010. I just wanted to follow up with a quick status. The 2.1 update is currently being tested and things are going very well so far. We

You could say that about every phone really everyday a new phone comes out which makes the last phone look like shit before the droid the hero was the leading Android device
No hero used the qualcomm MSM just like every other android phone (almost all HTC btw)... droid and moment were the first real android phones released by manufacturers outside HTC (samsung had the i7500 released earlier but germany only) and they used newer hardware, not the Qualcomm MSM 7201A old chip, but samsung build the S3C6410 and droid decided to go with teh cortex A8, both outperformining qualcomm MSM so much that qualcomm dropped the MSM line and went with the snapdragon which is similiar to Cortex archetecture... Samsung went with the 1176 core instead of the 1136 that the MSM uses and opted for ARMv6KZ arch instead of just ARMv6 like the MSM. Also integrating the 3d accelerator directly on the chip instead of requiring an external processor outside the cpu (increases battery load and latency time)... Also the Hero uses an old 3.2 TFT at about 16k color panel while droid opted for a higher resolution (and a lot more color) panel and moment was the first android released with an AMOLED display...

numus your knowledge of these phones is second to none, but I'm telling you for a fact I own both phones and everything you say that looks good on paper does not translate to actual usage on the phones.

I've a-b tested so many different areas of these phones and where the Moment performs better is where the Hero has Facebook integration on Sense, such as camera album and phone book. Also, downloading apps (3 or 4 at a time) can be slightly faster on the Moment.

Everything else: web browser, games, sprint tv, sprint navigation, youtube, email, accelerometer, market, texting...etc etc, are all ridiculously similar in speed.

I sincerely appreciate you sharing your knowledge, but you severely underestimate the ability of the Hero. I like both phones a lot, I just happened to like Sense and the size of the Hero a bit better.

Funny how fast you can jump ship consider this is your own words about the moment
I had to sign up to android forums after I saw this thread....

I love seeing that people also agree this phone is underrated, especially vs the Sprint Hero. In fact, if you google "Samsung Moment Underrated" you will see some of my reviews ;)...I suck at reviewing/articulating my points via typing, but nonetheless I really want prospects to see comments about the phone being underrated.

This phone is the underdog imo and needs much more love, I'm so tired of the stupid design arguments. Granted I would love if the phone was a bit "cooler" looking or had a sleeker design, but at the end of the day it is honestly the best phone I have owned and that includes my iphone.

My favorite app so far is Handcent SMS. One of my biggest complaints was the lack of notifications for text messages, but this app solved that problem.

Furthermore, i dont believe you actually ever got a custom rom loaded (correct me if i am wrong) and jumped ship before the cl14 MR was released, so excuse me if i say your "moment" experience is not valid anymore (unless i am wrong and please correct me if i am)

I've said in other threads regarding the Moment vs the Hero that I also overestimated the ability of the Moment vs the Hero. I am very quick to admit when I'm wrong and my original comparison of the Moment vs the Hero was based on in-store usage of the Hero vs the Moment that I personally owned.

Now that I own both phones I chose to do side-by-side comparisons because I too got caught up with the paper champion Moment and wanted to find out if it truly is the much faster/better phone, which it isn't.

Also, in regards to your other question, my comparisons are based on stock versions of both phones. I have no desire to root either phone because I think they both perform very well at the stock level. I'm assuming < 10% of Hero/Moment owners will choose to root their phone, so I don't think bringing a modified version of the phone into any one of these arguments is as beneficial to potential buyers as stock comparisons.

in this thread I mention that I was wrong with my original comparison

both phones are awesome

After owning the Moment and participating in Moment reviews and forums, I found that Moment owners are constantly preaching how it is the underrated phone (I was one of them), but after owning the Hero now I actually feel like it is the underrated phone to Moment owners. I hope that makes sense

I have very few complaints about each phone, they are absolutely amazing in their own right. I personally like the Hero for its stock features, including widgets, personalized contact list (facebook integration), usability (soft phone button)...I found myself adding a lot of apps to the Moment to make it look like the Hero (Open Home - beautiful widgets etc), so I figured why not just own the phone I'm trying to copy.

One of my favorite things about the Hero compared to the Moment is the fact that the buttons and trackball do not turn off when the phone is low on battery. On the Moment the back lights would turn off and it would bother me, especially if you were using the phone in the dark, which was not often, but often enough to be noticeable.

I've been able to sustain the same amount of battery life on both phones and if there is any difference it is too small to notice.

As for lag issues on the Hero, I don't seem to notice them any more than the small bits of lag I had on the Moment, so that is another difference that is too small to notice.

One of the biggest selling points for me when I purchased the Moment was the "beautiful" screen, well I finally sat down and compared the two phones side by side and if you simply switch youtube to high quality both phones look just about the same. Coming from an iphone where youtube videos were choppy and pixelated, both the Moment and Hero are a breath of fresh air. I realize that the AMOLED screen doesn't just apply to videos, but that is honestly the only thing I was concerned about.

As for design, the Moment looks cool imo, especially for a phone with a slide out keyboard, so that should be an obvious plus for the Hero. However, there are some things I dislike about the Moment such as the covers they put on the headphone jack, usb and the holder for the laynard is a lol point for me, really, laynards? I also prefer the track ball, which is not the most popular hardware feature from what I have read, but I do prefer it because I think it is slightly more accurate and the fact that it lights up. Also, even though the Hero isn't that much thinner or that much lower in weight, I still feel like it is much smaller when I hold it, I consider it to be much more efficient for those of us that like to use a phone with one hand, whereas with the Moment I feel like I have to use both hands. That is a very general statement and I can only offer you to try and hold both phones out of the box to understand my reasoning.

gps worked on the Moment, so I'm not too sure about that complaint. I read somewhere that if you turnf off wifi, gps should work and that seemed to be the solution for my Moment.

The qwerty keyboard was nice to have, but I actually prefer to just type on the screen quickly instead of opening and closing a keyboard. The only issue is the typos obviously, but that doesn't bother me. Also, I went through two Moments due to loose plastic around the keyboard, neither phone started that way, but after a few days of owning them the plastic keyboard started making a creaky cracking noise. This was probably due to carrying the phone in my pocket, but that should not loosen any parts on the phone (unless I was wearing skinny jeans lol). The defect was extremely minor and was not the reason I returned my second Moment for the Hero.

I probably should've addressed each specification in a neat manner, but oh well I hope this is helpful to anyone still trying to decide between the two phones.

Then your comparison is worthless because samsung did not optimize the kernel like they were suppose to.. to get an accurate representation of the actual processing speed and usability of the phone you have to compare them when they are both optimized.. Not just when the hero is optimized while the moment is not...

My review was based on out of the box comparisons, lol @ that being "worthless"

If you don't understand the value in that, then I think you should just stick to having sexy time with your Moment (you really do seem a bit obsessed with it) and stay out of review orientated threads.

If the MR optimizes the Moment's performance then I will do some comparisons again after I get it.

So you are saying your hero was brand new.. Out of the box from launch date, no MR updates on it....

Good question, I don't remember if my original review was prior to the Hero's MR.

Let me ask you something, do you own both phones?

Let me ask you something, do you have any idea what you are talking about half the time? You didn't even wait for the first MR before you started bashing the moment in comparison to the HERO, without prespective that hte phone was released a month prior on cdma, and was released on GSM months before that... While the samsung moment was released a few days before the droid...
I have access to a hero whenever i want to play with it... other then some integrations and the flashy senseui, the hardware is a joke in comparision and when put to multitasking and/or resource intensive programs the hero chokes up like my old xbox trying to play an mkv encoded file...
