Root New to Rooting - followup questions

Used the "Universal Eris Root for Dummies" with success 1st time. Bravo, great write-up.

- What exactly is in my NAND backup? Would restoring this bring me back to my old stock OS? Does it also include installed apps? Does it include data?
what folder is this backup stored in? can I have multiple NAND backups?

Your opinions please-What gingerbread ROM for Eris is recommended for having a working flash player?

lutz2, first-off, welcome to the AndroidForums! Glad you signed-up .

A Nandroid backup is a backup of most, but not all, of your filesystems on your phone. For this Eris, this is typically the /boot, /data, and /system partitions (filesystems). Some custom recoveries may also backup the /cache partition, notably my trackball-optional version of Amon_RA, as well as ClockworkMod (which I could advise you to steer clear of on the Eris at this juncture).

These backups are stored in the /sdcard/nandroid folder on your SD card. The main directory in there will be HT9xxxxxxxxx, where the x's are your phone's serial number. Inside that directory will be your BDS-ccyymmdd-hhmm (or BCDS-ccyymmdd-hhmm) folders (where BCDS each correspond to the partitions that were backed-up). Inside these directories are the boot.img, data.img, system.img, and (optionally) cache.img files, as well as the nandroid.md5 file which contains the MD5 checksums of each of the various .img files that were backed-up.

Restoring you Nandroid backup, provided you made one immediately after rooting, will take you back to near-stock. But, since you have installed a custom recovery overtop of your stock recovery, you don't really have a stock phone anymore.

There is a ROM you can flash that will take you completely back to stock (requiring re-rooting, etc). Just search for Flashback21 here at AF or over at XDA and you'll find it (it was put together by erisuser1, the author of the awesome, aforementioned Univseral Root for Dummies! guide).

Yes, you can have multiple Nandroid backups...as many any your SD card will allow. Just make sure you have a few hundred MBs of space and a full-charge on your phone.

Not sure about your GB / flash question...I'll let others chime-in re. that.

I have no real need to go back to completely stock, and I might not miss the flash player at all - its more of a 'nice to know i still have it'. In any case, looks like I could back up my current ROM and try something else easily enough.

I am enjoying GSBv3.9-ODEXed-CyanogenMod-7.1.0-RC1-Eris currently, Android 2.3.5. Stable so far and its like a whole new phone

I read somewhere that to get flash player I would need a Mod that includes the Sense interface so -anyone- let me know what your favorite Gingerbread with Sense is.


ps: I used the 'trackball-optional version of Amon_RA' for that extra level of comfort that I would not get stuck in an uncomfortable situation - my trackball worked but I'm still glad I have it.

Sounds like you've done everything correctly. As far as flash, there was a modified .apk that was suppose to work with phones that have the processor found in the Eris, but when someone tried it out it made the phone extremely laggy. Flash just doesn't seem possible outside of a 2.1 sense-based ROM. xtrSense, I think, will have the flash lite as part of it, but it is not gingerbread.
