How to get some money back after upgrading to the Photon? (Best Buy, Buy Back vs. Trade-In)

What's up everybody? I know that there are some "mixed" emotions regarding the Photon, but I personally couldn't be happier and actually do love this phone just as much (maybe a little more) than my EVO 4G.

That said, I wanted to share a little experience I had with Best Buy that I think would be beneficial to a lot of you. After I upgraded to the Photon, the intention was to connect one of my secondary lines to my EVO 4G and get the "trade-in" value that was estimated from Best Buy at $38 (online). It wasn't enough to rush to do all of that, prior to getting the Photon (so I could use it on the purchase), but I know I had to jump on it before the value went down even more. Nontheless, this past weekend (after I had 1 week with the Photon and decided that it was definitely the right phone to upgrade to, for my needs), I went into Best Buy with all the original packaging of the LG Optimus S w/ the phone hard reset of all the information and ready to receive a Best Buy gift card. I brought the phone directly to the Geek Squad (as instructed by the BB customer service reps) and told them that I was just looking to get the "trade-in" value for the LG Optimus S. The Geek Squad guy asked me a bunch of different preliminary questions, which I was happy to provide the info on (one question of which was, "did you buy the phone here at Best Buy?").

Since I purchased the phone at Best Buy, the Geek Squad rep said that he'd look up the information for the original phone purchase and my original receipt, so that he could properly evaluate how much I'd get in return (more money given with Gift Card). I was fully expecting that they'd be okay with the $38 stated on the online "trade-in" value. After he went through my receipt and I stood there patiently waiting for him to go through all that he needed to on the computer, he printed out my original receipt and pointed some things out to me. One of the things he pointed out was that I had taken the phone back to take advantage of a promotion that was going on the day after I actually got the phone. After he explained that to me, he promptly said to me:

"Because you bought the phone during that promotion, you're actually going to get more back than you originally thought. You'll be getting $200 on a BB Gift Card. So it's 4 times what you had originally though."

After he told me that, I was somewhat in shock. I had gotten the phone for free on an upgrade, but because the Geek Squad guy said that it was eligible for the "Buy Back" program because of the promotion I had purchased it under. SO, rounding out the story, I had a $200 Gift Card, which I promptly took over to the Best Buy Mobile department and added the Buy Back program for the Photon AND the Flyer that I purchased (they had to re-do the purchase, just to have the Buy Back on the same receipt, but it was no problem).

Moral of the story - Best Buy "Buy Back" program might actually be worth the up front money that is spent. And for those of you that are coming from a phone that you think could end up having no value, I don't think it would hurt to bring it over to the Geek Squad to see if you could get money for it (especially if you have all the original equipment that came with the phone). If you want to see the "Buy Back" vs. "Trade-in" values, here are the links to check:

I can assure you the Buy Back program is definitely worth the money. I only had my Evo 5 months but because I was enrolled in the Buy Back program when I bought it I was able to get a $300 Best Buy gift card that I used towards the ($700) purchase of my Photon. I was skeptical about how easy or complicated it would be. PIECE OF CAKE!! Very much worth it.

Thanks for chiming in, Whiskey. Quite honestly, I got a lot more benefit because I hadn't had that phone for very long on my secondary line and it originally only costed me tax.

If I were to keep the Photon for almost 2 years, buy back value only ends up being around $80 ($140-$59.99 up front buy back). At that point, selling on ebay may still be a better option for me, but that's definitely a "no hassle" approach to getting rid of old equipment. Same for the Flyer, if I were to keep it longer than 1 year.

BB should price match Sprint (or any other retailer) so you would/should able to get it for $549.00 minus $300.00 which would have only been $50.00 higher than if you would have had an upgrade.

I was very excited to sign up for the BuyBack program, it was even better that it was half off if you enrolled in the black-tie protection. My rep said to add it for one month and then I could disconnect. It gave me a discount of $20.00 so I was pleased.

That was the Deal Breaker for me. I will get at least $279 on gift card next year for a phone. If you are able to update every year. You might never pay for a phone again, and have a few $$ extra on the card.

That is not a new contract price from Sprint?? I used my upgrade & signed a new contract in February so I didn't think I qualified for any discounts on the Photon. That's a bummer if I could have gotten it for $150 less!!

$549 is the price to buy it outright from Sprint. BB prices are always $150 higher than the no upgrade price at the Sprint store (at least in my experience). When I was signing up for the buyback, I asked if they would price match Sprint even if I was buying a phone outright and using the Buyback and they said yes. If I was you, I would go back and get the price adjusted w/in 14 days.

I kept the original box, manuals, memory card, and charger for my hero, and always had it in a silicone case. I paid $99 for it 19 months ago, and checked on line and saw some low price like $35.

I took everything in with me when I bought the photon, and the actually gave me $64 for the hero. For $35 I would have kept it as a backup, but for $64 it was well worth the trade in/buyback.

Also I do plan on keeping the Photon for 2 years. The Insurance/repair plan is $9.99/month, but $165 ($181 with sales tax) if purchased for 2 years up front. Still better than 240 for the two years protection.

All in all, I though the buy back was pretty good.:D

I think I'll go up there today & talk to them. Do I need to take any kind of documentation with me, showing Sprint has it for $549?
Thank you!!!

Wow, I didn't realize that they did that. I wonder if they could do that for "sales tax" purposes as well (for those that paid the upgrade price)?

Thank you!!!

I just told them what price I saw on the Sprint website and they pulled it up to verify it. I am actually headed over to my local BB to see if they will price match Sam's upgrade price. The guy I spoke to on the phone said that they would so I have my fingers crossed!

Good Luck!

If I could thank you 150 times I would!! I finally got to Best Buy Friday & got my $150 back. First I called the store I bought it from & spoke w/ the dept manager. He told me they would not price match other stores after the sale, only their own price (if it went down). I was not satisfied with that answer so I got online with customer service & they told me that information was wrong, BB will price match after the fact & they gave me the link to their price match policy. I printed that off & took it with me to a different store along with my receipt & the screen shot from Sprint's website. I explained the situation to customer service & the deal was done.

So again...THANK YOU for giving me that information!!!! I never would have thought twice about comparing prices, much less asking for a price match refund. :D :D :D :D
