Help New firmware SGS2 impact?

Hi there,
In Australia I am running XWKE7 firmware, and Kies is telling me that an update to XWKG1 is available. I do not want to root the device at this point because I want to keep the warranty. Can someone running this version please confirm;

- Does version KG1 fix the Wifi Sharing "bug" that keeps turning this and Wifi Sharing Manager on chewing up the battery. Is Wifi Sharing used for Wifi Direct I think?

- Does USB hosting / OTG still work in XWKG1 as it does in XWKE7, ie can plug a card reader into the USB port and SGS will mount it under \sdcard\usbStorage? Or keybaord etc.

I know that the ability to change the colour of the native messaging app seems to have disappeared. So I am trying to confirm if it's really worth the update?

firstly, if i understand part of ur first question, u dont need to root ur phone to update firmware.

secondly, i dont think KG1 is worth an update. yes, all future updates have removed messaging app's themes, which is dumb, but thats how it is. however, if ur interested in flashing a new firmware via Odin (also not related to rooting, just a faster way to get updates than Kies), there's a KG5 update, which i find to be much better. firstly, its running android 2.3.4, and i can guarantee the wifi sharing bug is no more. the high android OS usage is also fixed. so i find it very possible to get an easy 24 hours on my phone, after struggling to get 14 hours on KF2 etc. so if ur interested in flashing via odin, ive linked the guide. if not, its not worth it (for me) to flash KG1 :)

to answer ur other questions, yes Wifi Sharing is Wifi Direct, ive never used it so its safely frozen on my (rooted) device. but on KG5 (or KG1 for that matter) its not been an issue.

i cant confirm about USB OTG working but i assume it does, as ive not heard any complaints about it here (i think i wouldve seen something on this forum if there was an issue :D)

the answer is in the first line. ^

Kies will get the updates eventually, but users on xda forum (username intratech) posts these firmwares as soon as they are released, and are made available immediately..these are flashed via Odin. Odin does not receive updates, u need to download them urself.

i assume Kies has to go thru a process for updates to be made specific to a region, which is why some regions get it faster than others

Thanks folks. Yes I want to stick with kies update for the time being and not go down the rooting track just yet.

So even though I do be not have access to KG5 does it fix the wifi sharing problem?

With wifi turned on with KE7 I struggle go to get 8 hours. After everyone telling me that wifi uses less power, I couldn't understand what was going on until I found wifi sharing was the thing sucking the battery life away. So when I update I want to make sure it's worthwhile.

wifi>3g in power usage
i'm currently doing a test now. i turn off wifi since last night and it's been 17 hours and i only use about 20%

If by "problem" you mean the fact that the darn thing runs without any means of preventing it, then no I don't think so. KG6 definitely has the same issue and it has the same build date.

will i void my warranty if i update thru odin?

Possibly. As it would not be an officially-sanctioned update for your handset then Samsung could point to it as voiding the warranty terms. I can't give you a sure-fire answer simply because I don't know of anyone testing it out.
