Help Upgrading firmware to newest.

I am thinking of upgrading my firmware to the newest. Mine is currently 2.2 Kernal version 2.6.32.9 Build FROYO.UGjL2.

Do I need to do a factory reset?
I have backed up the usual contacts etc. If I do a factory reset, what do I lose? Have you upgraded your firmware to the newest? How do you like it?

Well I never upgrade with old data.
99% of all problem after an update is old settings that the new firmware cant handle.
Make sure you have a good backup on your stuff.

Ok, so I:

1) backup all my contacts and everything I can off my phone;
2) remove the "external" SD card and then;
3) do a factory reset and then;
4) update to the new firmware

Does this sound good?

I cannot access the backup file. Luckily I backed up my contacts separately a few days ago, but I also performed a full backup. I can't find a way to perform a recovery of the backup. Why not?

What did you do the backup with?
Why dont you use google to backup you contacts?
