Help Phone keeps turning off

Hi guys.

Had my desire s about 6 weeks or so, but having a bit of a problem with it constantly turning off. what started as a once very few days thing which I could deal / initially put down to me accidentally turning it off, has now turned to a constant issue, with the phone being off nearly every time I go to it.

I have little doubt I will have to take it back, but the problem is that I have no idea what's causing it - and have never seen it do it, meaning I can't replicate the issue. There is no pattern at all, other than I finish using the phone, turn the screen off, and then when I go back, it's off. Sometimes I'll get a HTC Crash notification, but not always.

My suspicion is that the power button is sticking or something, as it doesn't feel like it's clicking - but as I say, I can't replicate it, so can't be sure.

Has anyone else had anything like this & know what the cause was, so I can at least point it out to the shop staff?

Difficult to know what's going on based on the description.

As well as a hardware issue, like the one you suggest, it could be an app you've installed that's causing the problem. However, if you've done a Factory Reset and experience the issue on a fresh phone with no added apps, then that points back to hardware or, if you got it, possibly a conflict with the lastest OTA ROM/firmware upgrade.

One thing you may want to try is to turn off wifi connections, the mobile data connection and GPS, that's if you have them on, to see if this may have an effect.

In case it is malware/virus-related, then make sure you have a working anti-virus app on your phone.

Also, are you able to notice if the battery feels warm when this happens? That might indicate that the cause is power-related (e.g. a battery fault); or your phone is overheating due to a hardware problem; or some system heavy process(es) are making your phone work too hard.

thanks notebook, given me a few things to try / check

I hadn't actually tried a full reset, so will add it to my to do list after some other things to check.

I've done a full virus check with lookout, which didn't find anything

I've uninstalled a few apps, including 1 I know to have given me issues (battery life related) before incase it's playing up (its an app for exchange emails). Pretty much all my apps are fairly standard, big names one - nothing out the ordinary.

You mentioned whether the battery gets hot or anything. whilst I can't say it has, it did remind me that sometimes when it happens, the battery icon goes grey and shows an explanation mark - not sure if that's a clue or not.

Check the battery doesn't move when it's in the battery compartment and that the contacts on the battery look OK. Also, check your SIM is fitted tightly in its slot.

Given that one possibility is that it could be a battery fault (although it could also be many other things besides), if you do take it back to the shop, you might want to try just getting the battery replaced to see how you get on with a new one. However, this might just delay the inevitable.

If you leave it charging overnight or for long periods with the USB, does the problem occur then?

I think maybe you've helped me sus it out - and maybe even solve it
I think it's indeed something in the battery department.
I can't 100% put my finger on it, but I'm getting close.

If I take the back hatch off, you have that flappy-panel holding the battery in position.
If i pressed down on that flappy panel in the right place, it would shut down again.

I've taken everything out (sim, sd, battery) and reseated them. So far, it's not done it again, so maybe something was sat right. I'll keep an eye on it, but hopefully that's sorted it out - such a simply thing (if it is indeed the cause!)

Nope - issue very much there :-(

I do think it's a hardware problem - something to do with how the battery sits / is held on. What a pain :-[

I think you've probably done everything you can to solve the problem. Sounds like you need to get the phone replaced.

I've just had mine returned from repair for exactly the same thing. The panel that lock battery and sin card was loose.

My question is, is it possible to restore free downloaded apps or is it only possible for paid apps?
