Help Evo 3D Software Update Coming August 23rd (rolling out now)

Thanks for this. I actually also wiped the SD card (I'm anal like that). One thing I've noticed after the update: the fake camera shutter sound and focus beep seem to still be sounding off, even if I have my phone on vibrate. Couldn't seem to stop this from happening... maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere?

Thank you for pointing that out, saved me from finding out on my own.

Thank Kinetic. I went to investigate and had the same problem he did.
We both did a factory reset before the update. How bout you, TheSystem?

After installing the update I decided to do a factory reset (its just what I do). During the initial set up wizard where you select different options for location, sync, and wi-fi, there is a new option for 'Tell HTC'. It lets you opt out of anonymous information collection. It is checked by default. If you do the update and don't do a factory reset, I recommend going through the 'Setup' wizard application in the application drawer and disable the collection of your information if you feel the same way.

*foil hat on* check!

---edit---
I also found an option in the Market in Settings to turn off 'Ad Mob' ads which are based on your interests. (can't remember if that was there before this update or not)

Has anyone else seen this app I geuss u could call it "tell HTC" I noticed it when i went to uninstall spiderman after this new update!! But iv never seen that before? And can't figure out how to use it if need be?

See above - you don't use it - it uses you.

Prior to this, only rooters were able to remove the HTC snoopers - and that's what it does, snoops for adding to the marketing database based on how you use your phone.

Clearly - knowing that they are now giving people S-OFF means that, yes, they are pulling out the stops and giving regular, non-rooting users access to ALL of the baloney - without rooting.

I rooted my Moment just to try to make it work - but I rooted my Evo because of the bloatware.

I agree - the more common-sense power they give BACK to the owners, the less people will see the need to root.

Nicely done, HTC/Sprint, nicely done! :)

Yeah weird when i do the screen shot my phone makes the shutter sound...but when i take pictures it don't? I don't want the sound but the option to turn it off is gone..just weird It's gone like I can't turn it on.or off?! And it don't make that sound when i take a picture anymore!?

Exact opposite for me: Screen shot = no shutter sound. Camera = shutter sound. Annoying.

The update screwed up my gb kb. It is taking up almost the whole screen and has jumbo size buttons looks pathetic. Anyone experiencing this issue?

Add-on? Try a re-install?

Does anyone know how to get the dictionary to stop popping up after every word is typed?

Sorry, I'm on a different keyboard anyways.

The day's young, maybe some one will have an answer as more users get the update and come on line.

Screen shot = no shutter when on vibrate or silent, shutter when volume is on
Camera = Shutter sound anytime

I hate to admit this, but this shutter sound is one of those small annoying details that is a deal breaker in my book. If I had known about it going in, I would have hands down forgone this update.
Some developers make it so you cannot disable the shutter sound on purpose(Motorola is one of them). HTC hasn't been one of them in the past that I know of, so I'm leaning towards a bug that needs a quick update. But you never know, they could have changed their policy.
See this thread for some more reading on it:

no need to go through the setup wizard to disable Tell HTC. its avail in the "About Phone" section.

its there in plain site.. some times that's difficult to see. :)

Hello all,
Just a fair warning, I am new to HTC, Sprint, and android. I came from a iPhone 4. I owned and jailbroke them all and was pretty good at it. Having said that I know nothing about HTC and andriod (but I love it WAY more than the iPhone and iOS). I rooted my phone about a week ago and installed CleanRom v1.3. I like it and it worked well. I am not wanting to update my software. I back up all my info via MyBackup and did a factory reset via the recovery mode by turning off my phone and pressing power + volume up. I then downloaded the new OTA update. It downloaded fine and asked me if I wanted to install it, I said yes. My phone restarts and an exclamation point with a triangle shows up along with a little blue android dude. I wasn't sure if this was normal or not. it has been 50min and they are still there. Again, I wasn't sure if this was normal or not. I have tried to look this up online and can't find anything. I was hoping someone would be able to help me out with this. Thanks!

Note-I can pull the battery out and restart my phone fine. It just shows up with my factory reset setting and still seems to be rooted.

Didn't seem to have fixed the messaging widget issue. I want to be able to put the HTC messaging widget on one of my home screens but it efaults to Handsent. I had no problem doing this on my Evo 4G or my Hero. It just won't let me do it on the 3D. Other then the screen capture, I haven't noticed any other changes.
