Root I need further understanding!

You can download rom manager and click backup current rom or you can put your phone into recovery mode[ turn of phone hold power and volume down and go to recovery then make a nandroid backup

do not use rom manager. it will cause more problems then not. use titanium backup for apps and sms backup for text.

also when you make a nandroid backup before flashing, it will save data as well.

edit;also if your contacts are with google then you are good to go.

check you contacts in people. looks like in gingerbread you can't switch from phone contacts to google contacts. the only way i saw is if you add the contact 's name to google then you can link the two together. there is a chain symbol at the top right corner where you can link the two together.

You can also copy your contacts to a file on the SD card by opening your contacts then Menu>Import/Export>Export to SD Card.

Then when you are on your new ROM or after a factory reset you can do Menu>Import/Export/Import from SD Card.

This is my preferred method as I like to have a hard copy(file) backup of my information.

I'm new to Android and I have the Evo 4g to start off with. I'm trying to root it like I did for my Palm Pre but I'm not having any luck. I downloaded everything I needed but when I start to run revolutionary that I extracted to my desktop I get this error message.
The program can't start because AdbWinAPI.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem.
I did this four times. I even changed computers and the message is still there. What am I doing wrong? Can someone please help me?

oh okay that makes sense. this is a dumb a question but do i then just save the sd card to my computer? or do i not have to do that? and this is all under the circumstance that i do a factory reset!

In theory your SD card contents should not be affected by a factory reset, though it is always best to copy any backups (read: nandroids, SMS, Contacts, Apps) to your computer hard drive for safe keeping.

With that said I had to do a factory reset on a friend's Evo4g and stored his contacts on the SD card during the process without backing them up to a computer hard drive and everything went according to plan.
