Hero slow wifi speeds?

I seem to get about 3Mbits down max speed on my hero, versus 17Mbits on my computer, both using wifi. Latency is also a slight issue.

3Mbits is okay, but just wondering if this is abnormal. I used the speedtest.net app, and I connect to my router using WPA1.

Does everyone else get similar results? BTW im using Fresh 1.1 rom.

I haven't tested this myself, that's my disclaimer, but your phone won't be capable of the same speed as your laptop/desktop. The wireless chipset uses the CPU to process network packets and the CPU is just not that powerful. It's also only a G chipset IIRC and that will affect your speeds. You get lower speed from G on an N router running hybrid (N+G) than you do from a router running just G. But like I said I haven't tested this personally.

I appreciate your attempt but I could get 50+Mbit out of my computer in 1998 on a 266mhz processor :) ... half the speed of my android phone!

Just wondering if like WPA slows it down or if anyone else experiences this or if its the rom or abmormal.

Where, on a T1???? 56.6Kbit was the fastest commercially available modem at the time.

It's not an attempt. In 1998 you were likely not to be using a network stack that shoves packet processing off to the CPU. If the NIC processes the packets then you get much higher speeds. Furthermore the bus from the SD card or ROM is not that speedy and the controller for that also pushes off to the CPU for some of the read/write tasks. And while the 266 in 1998 is half as fast the CPU in your phone is not x86 architecture and has a reduced instruction set so performs some tasks slower than x86 processors half the speed. So when you shove packet processing off to the same processor that's handling rendering a web browser, checking mail, and so on then yes it will slow down you maximum throughout. WPA shouldn't have any effect on your speed but that's easy to test: just turn it off on your router and test.

On a LAN. 100mbps full duplex was not an uncommon card at that time. He was referring to maximum speed in reference to my mention of the proc slowing down the network. He was logical in his assumption but wrong in the conclusion.

Yes I get similar results but it does depend on what speed you get from your ISP provider. You are not going to get the same speed that you will on a desktop/laptop.

You are confusing LAN speed with Internet speed. Wireless G would be 54 and LAN is 100. Would you get the full 54 on wireless, most likely not. Like one of the other posters said, just remove encryption and see if it make a difference. I am betting it is negligible.

I get 1Gbps on my wired LAN :) of course I am using surplus cluster hardware :p

I was talking about the popular cat 5 cable. Do we really need to go down the list of cables with throughput...no. Yes you can have gigabit, but do most people, no. Good for you for having gigabit connection.

We could talk about the spec for running ethernet cable and how much quality you loose running it over fluorescent light fixtures ;) I was just teasing a little bit. (or we could talk about 54mbps being perfect case maximum the chances of actually getting anywhere near it)

I was just getting ready to ask if he was referring to network speed or internet speed, my addled brain forgets these things sometimes.

I read internet since he said "down" speed. And on reflection, a T1 wouldn't even give you 50Mbit, that would be an OC1!

Hey guys, just saw the updates here.

Yes I had an OC1. Actually OC3s back in 1998. It was called college ethernet. :) And it was orgasmic. But yes, I was referring to LAN speeds, mostly.

Romeo, no im not confusing anything with packet processing. a 528mhz processor can handle a gigabit of traffic. This is really not about hardware, and more about the wireless limitations inside the hero. My ipod touch can get HUGE speeds over lan wireless, but not my hero.

I just wanted to see what others get. If the hero is limited to 3mbits than it is. That sucks. But not the end of the world. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one. I mean G4 is faster than wifi? THats retar ded.
