Rogers Update: 911 Fix for Rogers HTC Dream and Magic is Ready

Argh! Rogers has not only been continuously texting me with warning about the 911 bug, but calling my cell phone with automated messages as well! Today, at about 5:00pm they called my _HOME_ phone number with an automated message about it!

Attention Rogers: I know about the bug! Stop crank-calling me!

5:12pm: I am on the phone now with "Craig" from Rogers (I wonder if they pick their own CSR names, or if they are assigned?) and I am on hold. Waiting for them to tell me if they are going to stop pestering me about the update.

5:17pm - Craig is transferring me to tech support.

5:24pm - Talking to Calvin. Told him about the problem. He asked if I had done the update. I informed him I was waiting until the bugs were fixed for the bugfix. He insisted that the calls and texts were for my protection. I said I understood Rogers might have the right to call and text me on my cell, but NOT on my home phone! He said he couldn't do anything about it, and suggested I talk to a CSR. Being transferred now.

5:28pm - Limeesha (sp?). Told her the problem. I am on hold. Limeesha (I am very sorry if I am spelling it incorrectly) is back. She is removing my home number from my profile. She believes this will stop the calls coming to my home number. She can't do anything about my cell.

Woop!

After a week my issue has finally been escalated to Tier 2 support (whatever that means)...

Following from other posters concerns regarding the installation of the update via MircoSD (this was the only option I had)...

This resulted in my phone becoming defective.

I wonder is Rogers still sending out the MicroSD with updates? Perhaps it's my MicroSD that is corrupt which resulted in the failed install of part 2?!?! How can I tell if it is? The MircoSD formats in FAT32 and it works in other hardware.

Anyway, all I know is I'm not spending any more money on SDcards, readers or any USB hookups!

Rogers get your wallet out and fix this and stop dithering!

Is the 911 bug a problem with the Android OS or the HTC hardware. If its the Android OS, wouldn't the Eve need to be updated as well.

This has been brought to the attention of LG. So far all they are saying is that this does not affect the EVE. Could be that the Android 1.5 Base that LG used for the EVE already had the patch applied to it before they started final production. It could also just be something that's particular to the hardware on the Dream/Magic devices.

As long as nobody's talking there is no real way to know for sure.

That would make sense, given the late 2009 (November?) release of the phone. Chances are the final ship build was post-discovery and patch.

I wish all you people would stop whining and blaming Roger solely for ALL the problems.

I doubt it's solely Roger's fault that your battery drains so fast. *knock on wood* my phone has been on for 78 hours with 4 hours of awake time and it has a 1/4 left. I'm not sure if that includes call time when the display shuts but never the less, it's a setting issue. Go into setting and turn off all the useless things.

Also don't expect to be using GPS,Wifi and make 4 hours of call and expect it to run for 4 days. It's a standard battery not a nuclear power device.

I don't know the exact details but there's certain "brackets" or "tiers" that customers reach after having an account with Rogers for a year or two. The more money you spend with them each month, the higher the bracket you can reach in order to get a discounted upgrade phone.

e.g. You've been a customer for 2 years and you've only spent $30 each month on voice only but want to upgrade to a smartphone. The smartphone will probably still cost you $150 - $200, depending on promotions.

e.g. You've been a customer for 2 years and you spend $100 on voice, data, etc. You've probalby already reached the tier 2 discount level and may get that same phone for $50 or less.

However, Rogers recently updated their policy so it may or may not affect you. But as far as I know, you still have to wait TWO YEARS to get a subsidized smartphone, if you already have one.

EDIT: When you upgrade and use your "points", they re-lock you into 3 year contract again.

This doesn't make any sense. I called Rogers yesterday and the CSR didn't understand anything about a points system.

It seems that there is no system like Fidos point system, where a customer of many years can build up points to where they can receive a 16gb iPhone for FREE. I've been with Rogers for ten years (two accounts for most of that time) and never heard anything about accumulating points.

Does anyone else know anything about a Rogers points/rewards program. I am really wondering if I am missing out on this?

Dude, chill out would ya. Good for you that you are having a good experience with the update, but that doesn't take away from what others are experiencing. You don't have their devices and you don't know what they use them for, so how can you be spewing off about turning usless things off. Just because it's useless to you doesnt mean that it's not a requirement to someone else. Fact is, post update the battery does not last as long as before update with the same usage.

Not that it effects me one way or the other, battery makes it to the end of the day for me and i charge it every day anyway. Now instead of having 35% left at end of day, I have about 20% left which is still better than the dream that my magic replaced. But what about thoese people that were sitting at about 10% at the end of the day, now due to this update their phone will not last the day or the will have to change their usage patterns.

Hopefully when we get 2.1 battery life improve as Android post 1.5 is supposed to have better battery management. I know CyanogenMod running 1.6 on my dream runs faster and the battery lasts longer than the stock Android 1.5

I think they must have something like this because I remember a few years back when the only Rogers service we had was internet I called about a mobile promotion and they basically told me I was not eligible for the promotion I was was inquiring about because I had not spent enough money. Now since we have had all our communication and entertainment services through them for 3-4 years, plus I have kept our account in good standing, I get all the discounts, promos and then some. The "free" perks we have gotten in the last couple of years totals up to an amount that I feel was very generous. Sans wishing I had never got talked into an HTC Dream I am a very happy Rogers customer on many fronts.

If you really want to get pissed off go and look at the plan rates for phones in the US. We pay double, sometimes more for the same, or less, features.
There are a few US plans where its ALMOST cheaper for me to have a US phone here in Canada then it is to have my Rogers phone..... thats SAD!
The US hasn't had "long distance" when calling inside the states for a long time. Yet I had to fight to keep my 100 free long distance minutes a month from some special they had 4 or 5 years ago.

Oh.... NOT this argument again.

Sure, like the rest of us Canadians, I would love cheaper rates.

BUT let's remember a few KEY issues that determines telecomm rates:
1. 35 million vs 260 million potential customers
2. Cost of infrastructure is significantly higher in Canada (vast unpopulated distances)
3. More competition in the U.S.
4. Deregulation

All these factors (especially 1, 2) keep prices higher in Canada. There is no conspiracy about the high costs.

You're right its not good for their bottom line. But the number of actual users they are giving this discount to is minimal. And I would bet that even without data on the bill the rest of the bill will more then cover what their actual cost is.

If you call and complain enough I bet you could probably get a second months data free out of it.

Not true at all!

One month of free data is a nice bonus for us BUT it will represent next to nil on Rogers bottom line.

Honestly, I don't know why so many people are complaining about this update.
[EDIT] I am referring to Magic owners that successfully updated their phones to the new Sense UI. I feel genuinely bad for Dream owners or those Magic owners that didn't experience a successful update.

IMHO, this update now make my Magic function as a phone now! Many of the major issues such as dropped called, random crashes, lost cell signal have vanished since the update. I am relatively happy now! :)

I am not necessarily ready to thank Rogers b/c this is what the phone should have been since day 1! I am also positive that we only received this update b/c Rogers was legally mandated to do so.

To all those awaiting Android 2.x, don't hold your breath. Besides, 2.x doesn't even near solve many of the other Android problems (many affect me). All one needs to do is go to android - Project Hosting on Google Code and see just how many issues there are in 2.x. Access to more apps... yes but big deal!

I am very likely going to dump Android unless Google make some significant changes before the iPhone 4G comes out. Unfortunately, I don't expect the Google Android team to suddenly start listening to their customers any time soon.

Anyhow, in the meantime, my Magic with the Sense UI works pretty well. :)

i'm new to the forum, and only signed up cause of this issue. i updated my HTC Magic on monday, and had no problems with the update. My phone was not rooted to any other rom, so this update pretty much gave me a new phone. i love it. problem is, i have no data, no 3G. i am with rogers btw, and not with fido. i have called the rep about the issue numerous times this week. yesterday(thursday) they escalated it to level 2. saying over 400 people have this issue. i asked about a network refresh, and he said no. that all i can do, is to wait patiently till it starts working again. they've done everything they could. btw one rep was an idiot. we kept going through settings, asking me to go here, and go here, when i mentioned that where he was asking me to go didn't exist, he would ask if i was even using a rogers phone...

i'm really getting pissed off with rogers, i left telus, to be with rogers, and frankly i wish i stayed with telus... i hate telus, but goddamn i'm really hating rogers now

Did you try rebooting the phone (pull battery out)?

That worked for me.

I am glad for you that the update was beneficial. However that is not the case for everybody here. Many people are having very real problems with the update.

Does the fact that you don't have any problem will make everybody else's problems go away?

I know Haitians who would like very much if that were the case.

Why wouldn't it accept your serial number?

If you are referring to the Sense UI update on HTC's site.... it is broken, as far as I can tell, it will not accept any serial number. I emailed HTC about this but they are usually as bad as Google for replying (or fixing a known problem). It is best to download this update from Rogers.

Are there still Magic owners that haven't yet updated their phones???

Huh?

What bugs are referring to?

[EDIT: I guess you mean the ones you outlined here: http://androidforums.com/rogers/38974-rogers-911-sense-ui-update-post-your-problems-here-2.html

I have only experienced:
- VoiceDialer is GONE - Never worked right anyway! I recommend Choice Dialer (but BT activation won't work - This is a well-known Android fault.
- Fido customers report their phones now constantly say they are roaming (data I believe) - N/A, I am on the Rogers network.
- Some people report various FCs and spontaneous reboots - Not me!
- One person says he was unable to delete icons from the home screen (including Rogers icons)... has anyone else encountered this? - I suspect this is a ID10T error :p
- Photo gallery error (some users report only photos in the 100MEDIA folder show in gallery, unlike in previous version which only required photos to be in any sub-folder of the DCIM folder) - Another user error? No problems on my phone! In fact the Album is faster and supports multi-touch!
- Possible problem with MS Exchange (via Twitter) - Can't confirm (my company recently and stupidly moved to corporate gmail.
- Twitter user XBrav is having problems with freezing, buzzing, and calls not completing. - None here!
- Flash player not always working - You mean YouTube? There is no true Flash player - and the YouTube player didn't play every video before the update.
- Battery possibly draining faster for some users, may depend on use. - Battery life hasn't changed enough to notice on my Magic.
- Some apps previously available in the marketplace are now not available. - Possible! But I have not noticed. I am using aTrackDog (highly recommended for one touch app updates) and all my 54 apps are still available!
- Call forwarding issues - no problems!

IMHO, the new Sense UI makes this phone what it should have been from day one. Are there bugs? Absolutely! But these bugs are mostly all present in even the latest 2.x Android update! So, if you are awaiting bug fixes, you will probably never get them. This is not Rogers fault.

Actually, after I wrote that, I realized that my comment might seem insensitive to those with REAL issues. My apologies! I was really referring to the complainers that successfully updated their phones and expected more or complained about how inconvenient the whole process was (myself included)... yes, Rogers made some mistakes but overall I am happy with the final result. It will do until the iPhone 4G is released. :p

Remember, prior to this update, my phone (Magic) barely worked!

Bug or not, does that give you the right to call someone an idiot. So you are not seeing these bugs on you phone, good for you, you win the gold star but there are people here that have some bugs on their phone since the update. A thread was created to report bugs, this user reported what he/she thought was a bug..

OMG! With all due respect Lighten up! It was a joke. ID 10T error... commonly used in the tech support industry to indicate that the customer was most likely at fault and not necessarily an indication of a person's overall intellect.

In all seriousness, we should be careful to report REAL problems BECAUSE we don't want to over-burden HTC/Rogers/Google with non-issues. We need whomever (if ever) to focus on the real problems.

Every problem is a real problem. These issues we are reporting are usually already fixed in a repository. It's just a matter of compiling it together as a build. Honestly, if it's not complained about, there's no guarantee the update patch will be implemented.

- VoiceDialer is GONE - Never worked right anyway! I recommend Choice Dialer (but BT activation won't work - This is a well-known Android fault.

Sconnelly: You and I have discussed this already, and I have already pointed out to you that Bluetooth does work with Voice Dialer PRE-Update to initiate calls hands-free. As I told YOU previously, this feature is apparently fairly unique to the Rogers ROM (and one of the reason why many non-Canadian Android users were a jealous of that feature in the Rogers ROM because of the lack of true voice dialing in Android).

As for the value of Voice Dialer, and the reason it is an issue that they removed it, please consider that since it did work with BT, even though it may not have been perfect, it was an option. I think it's safe to say that most of the people who post in these forums understand Android and know what needs to be done to get it working smoothly, however, we need to look out for the common users whose only experience with a smart phone so far (if any) is likely an iPhone. These people might not be so savvy. They might not realize that there are other options for voice dialers and how/where to find them.

Consider this: If you want Android to be successful, it must be adopted not only by techies and geeks, but by the majority, who are not necessarily so inclined. Removing Voice Dialer from the phone hurts those people.

As for Bluetooth after the update, we have yet to properly confirm, but the reports I have seen suggest that BT initialization of calls after the update does not work.

If true, that means that BT Voice Dialing worked before the update, and doesn't work after. That seems like a pretty big flaw to me.

Oh, BTW: In Ontario the grace period for getting soff with a warning when you don't use your phone in the car hands free is over now. The police will be issuing tickets for $155.00 each.

- Fido customers report their phones now constantly say they are roaming (data I believe) - N/A, I am on the Rogers network.

This has been confirmed. Fido says they don't have an answer. They insist users will NOT be charged roaming fees, but we will have to wait until the next billing cycle to see. Given our experiences with wireless billing departments, can you really say you trust them to not screw it up?

- Some people report various FCs and spontaneous reboots - Not me!

Bully for you. Obviously if it works for you, everyone else is a liar, right? Or maybe their all ID10Ts?

- One person says he was unable to delete icons from the home screen (including Rogers icons)... has anyone else encountered this? - I suspect this is a ID10T error :p

This has not be confirmed by anyone, so I will remove it from the list the next time I update it. However, regardless of whether or not you were "just joking" it is just plain arrogant and mean to suggest that the user who thought he/she was experiencing it is an idiot.

Good job encouraging use of Android!

- Photo gallery error (some users report only photos in the 100MEDIA folder show in gallery, unlike in previous version which only required photos to be in any sub-folder of the DCIM folder) - Another user error? No problems on my phone! In fact the Album is faster and supports multi-touch!

This has yet to be confirmed, it might be user error, or it might be a bug in Sense UI that requires specific events to recreate. Good for you that it works just fine. Doesn't mean it works fine for everyone.

- Possible problem with MS Exchange (via Twitter) - Can't confirm (my company recently and stupidly moved to corporate gmail.

If you can't confirm, don't comment.

- Twitter user XBrav is having problems with freezing, buzzing, and calls not completing. - None here!

Wonderful. I'm glad you're not encountering this... oh wait, I forgot, you seem to believe that because it isn't happening to you the rest of us should stop complaining about it, or suggesting that there is anything wrong at all?

- Flash player not always working - You mean YouTube? There is no true Flash player - and the YouTube player didn't play every video before the update.

No... we don't mean YouTube. We mean Flash. The Magic after the update now has Flash. That's right, Flash. Didn't you know that? Does that make you an ID10T? Don't worry, I was just joking. Not.

The flash player apparently does not work with all instances of flash in the browser. This may just be an issue of the Flash ver, rather than a bug with the update.

- Battery possibly draining faster for some users, may depend on use. - Battery life hasn't changed enough to notice on my Magic.

It has changed for some people, including pir8, who is actually a programmer and a reviewer of these phones, so he's not an ID10T. he has actually contacted Rogers about getting a replacement phone as a result. Do you think he's lying, or do you think he's stupid?

- Some apps previously available in the marketplace are now not available. - Possible! But I have not noticed. I am using aTrackDog (highly recommended for one touch app updates) and all my 54 apps are still available!

Awesome! All your apps work great for you! BTW: It is a known issue that certain apps if flagged in the Market will not display for new updates until/unless Google acknowledges the update and allows those apps to be seen by it. So in this case, if there are missing apps it's apparently because Google hasn't "approved" our new update for those apps in the marketplace. I can't remember the exact term for the flag on those apps, I'm sure someone else will be able to provide it. Other wise I can go find the requisite thread for you.

- Call forwarding issues - no problems!

The users experiencing this issue (and there are are more than one) have been dealing with Tech support in an attempt to clear it up, but nothing yet. They don't seem to be insane, so they're probably not hallucinating it. Maybe it's caused by something else, we will have to wait and see, but are you suggesting that their experience isn't valid?

SConnolley, I have seen you oscillate between spitting outrage and vitriol against Rogers, to acting like a brain-washed Rogers/HTC Magic Sense UI Fan Boi.

I've seen you angry about the treatment you received from Rogers, and about your desire not only to have 1.6, but to skip right on up to 2.1.

Now you seem to praise Sense UI from on high, and your comments about how YOU aren't experiencing any problems doesn't prove a damn thing.

Let's be perfectly plain: If it weren't for some of the people in this forum YOU wouldn't even have your glorious Sense UI update right now without rooting. You also wouldn't be getting 2.1 in the near future. If we hadn't complained and campaigned against Rogers and HTC, you can bet they wouldn't have done a damned thing.

So please, if you don't have something productive to contribute other than how wonderfully your phone works, don't bother.

Those who installed the new update to the Magic, can you also confirm that you see the following option on your phone:

Settings >> About Phone >> System Software Updates

If I had to guess, this would be the feature which allows for OTA updates to the OS. Am I correct? Right now there is no update to the OS but it would be good if the upcoming (mid-year) update to 2.1 were delivered in this manner.

Cheers!

@pir8, Not sure about that setting (I have not done update yet) however RogersMary told me via Twitter that this update adds OTA, and that the future updates would come OTA. I will look for her actual post and paste it here.

Thanks Mike!

This is good news. I just realized this OTA feature. All the more reason for @RogersMary and Rogers to get their act together and provide the list of features (new and removed) which are part of this update.....

I don't particularly want to go through each and everything to figure out what is new and what isn't there anymore.

@RogersMary where is the feature list????
