Root [CDMA] how to stop google from backing up apps...?

Norman, OK
so at some point in history I checked the box to have Google back up my apps.

anyone know how to shut this off, and perhaps delete the data it has? i would like to control this solely with TB.

I just flashed ViperROM v1.3. During the intial setup I unchecked for Google to back up apps and data, but it immediately started downloading stuff. I'm guessing that it was restoring some old back up, and won't update this back up any further. But i'd still like to stop the massive download attempt every time I try a new ROM.

If I recall, go to settings/privacy/ and turn off automatic restore

I'd like to know if that worked. I've been toying with the idea of another ROM switch, and I'd like to control the upload myself too.
Haven't tried it yet, actually. Still running w/ viper1.3. I'll be able to report back in a day or so. Once I get another day of battery life test with this one (which was good BTW. Made it through an 18.5hr day, before the battery meter turned orange).

Then I'll be trying cleanrom.

in case you haven't tried it yet, it did not work. I had (in the "privacy" menu) "automatic restore" and "back up my settings" unchecked when I booted to recovery to wipe and flash cleanROM. once rebooted to cleanROM, the auto-download began, i quickly unchecked both of the above settings, but the downloading continued. after a few more apps, the connection to market usually fails (or something else fails) and the rest of the apps don't download.

it seems that unchecking these settings perhaps just stops you from backing up current and future apps. but if you've had it on at some point in the past, then the data is stored somewhere and that data will be auto-downloaded.

it may be that this list, where ever it is stored must be erased. not sure how to do that though. I looked through my market account settings, but I haven't found anything.

Going forward, if you install a new ROM, it auto sets the restore...

Here is what I do: I flash the new ROM and do NOT log into market or Gmail until I go to privacy and disable the backup to google. Once it is disabled, THEN log into Gmail or to Market and you'll be fine. I have done this so many times now that it is second nature... autopilot... I've not had an attempted restore since I started this method.

Yep, thats what I do to! I hate auto restore!

I'm planning on facing this with CleenROM myself if time permits this weekend, so please help me understand.

I think I recall that Setup (HTC app with top hat icon) runs at startup after the factory reset. I can completely skip the Gmail setup? I believe that triggers the Market connection and download.

I can skip that and then rerun Setup by hand after changing my other settings?

So you're suggestions worked, my old apps did not auto download. There may be some refinements/simplifications to my process as, in paranoia, I may have turned off unnecessary settings. But for starters, here's what I did...

Factory reset and full wipe.
Flashed CleanROM 2.1. It then boots to the startup/setup program...
I was unable to get out of this program, so I went through like this...
First screen, "Scheduled sync": I chose "manually sync", and then "next".
Second screen, "Set up WiFi": I did this, and then "next".
Third screen, "Use Google Location": I let 'em have it, and then "next".
Fourth screen, "Set up accounts": I did not set any up at this time, and just pressed "next".

This transistioned to the home screen and no apps proceeded to download.

In "Settings" then "Privacy", the "Automatic Restore" was checked. But this line was grey'ed out so I could not uncheck it. For now I left it like this. (***see below. I later noticed something that could be tried here)

In "Settings" under "Accounts and sync", I unchecked "Background data", then it asked me about "Backup and Restore", I unchecked this (or left it unchecked, I don't remember), then pressed "Next" and then "Finish".

At his time, Android sync'd my contacts. Still no apps.
Then, still in "Accounts and sync" settings, I checked "Auto-sync", and the rest of the Google accounts stuff, sync'd (mail, calendar, etc).

In "Settings", went to "Privacy", and both "Back up my settings" and "Automatic restore" were checked (?), and I was able to uncheck them both.

***This is when I noticed that if you want to uncheck them both, you have uncheck "Automatic restore" first, and then uncheck "Back up my settings". The other way around leaves "Automatic restore" greyed out and nonresponsive.

So there you have it, the auto-download was never triggered. Although I'm still not sure which step was key. In this sequence, at some point or another, it seems that all of the relevant settings were "on". Perhaps, you're right Early, it is the initial setup program, which automatically runs after your first boot, that triggers the auto-download. And since I didn't establish an account at that time, nothing happened. So you "Finish" that program, and go on your merry way. And maybe none of the "settings juggling" I did afterwards was necessary.

Ha!! Funny. I didn't have to type any of that novel I just made. You already posted the punch line.

I'd rec'd Early's post via email, and just dove right in to the experiment and write-up.

It helps to read all new posts. :p :)

If i recall that is how I had done it also was not login to Gmail at the start, it has been a few months since i have flashed, if I recall there is also something at the beginning setup that you can not check mark and it will also not load your apps, I don't recall, but I will be loading Scott's Rom probably tomorrow, so i will let you know.

If it worked then it was the right steps, lol...

No, thats fine. I used to do all that when I first booted. Do you have any idea how agitating it is when you flash pre-release ROMS 20 times a night (and thats no exaggeration) when you are planning on a release and want everything perfect?

The whole concept by google is a great idea... If your getting a replacement device because of hardware failure or what not but...

Man, I love the auto restore. I only download about 10 apps from the market but I do them every time I flash a new rom so the autorestore is great for me. I always flash at home sitting right next to my wireless router and set the router up during setup so it hits the market and is done in about a minute with everything I like to run already there.

I guess it really is true that they can't please everyone.

Let me add this little bit -- The setup procedure runs when you factory reset -- can't skip it. I just click next, next, etc. There is an option check box for backing up google during the setup. I uncheck that... That is not going to stop auto restore, however. When it asks for accounts, I skip it completely. You will hit the home screen with basically no sync whatsoever -- no contacts, no calendar, etc., because, well, you aren't connected to google and the phone doesn't yet know who you are.

Go to privacy in setup. You have to have backup my settings turned ON so you can turn OFF automatic restore. Once you turn automatic restore OFF, you can then turn off back up my settings... With both of those off, your phone will not attempt a back up or a restore.

Now log into gmail or market and your phone will start syncing contacts and calendar....

+1 ^^^^ agreed would be nice to login in to Google and play with the apps as you wish, delete and or disable the auto setup, would seem a no brainer.

It usually tries to install about 40 things for me. Half of which I don't want/use anymore. It would be great if you could edit your list of apps.

It's true, you can't please everyone with unadaptable implementation.
