Root Apps, Items That Can Be Safely Removed

Ok, nobody started this yet, but as in all phone rooting roms, people ask.

So, i've only removed the following so far, I'm freezing other things until I can do a nandbackup. Do note, that if you remove,freeze any apps, you should reboot your phone to avoid the apparent onslaught of FCs.

The only side affect I have noticed so far is that all of my ringtones are missing. They must be part of one of the apks. Other than that, everything I have tested seems to work fine.

It is also a good idea NOT to delete the APK files...

If you dont use an application such as Titanium backup to freeze the apk files, you can use Root Explorer.

1. Create a sub folder (I created it under /system/app/old)
2. turn on multi-select
3. Select all the APK files you want to remove (/system/app)
4. Click Move
5. Browse to the folder you created
6. Click Paste.

***Note: You will get a repeated crash message on DLNA and VSuiteApp (if you moved them). You will have to reboot.

Once I removed City ID my weather app would not zero in on my city.

I removed that weather app and am looking around for another one (not Weather Bug .. never again with that resource hog).

Frisco, for the last year or so i've been using MIUI Weather Widget. It looks similar to the sense weather widget. You can link weather, show next alarm, set two quick launch apps (when you touch hour, or minutes on the clock). you can also click a spot to show memory, battery and more system info quickly. Great widget, you should give it a try. The only issue right now is that it wont use GPS to pull current location weather, you have to define it via zipcode or city/state. Which I assume they do this to reduce battery drain. So, its a win/lose feature.

+1 OTAs tend to want the bloat on there. Don't delete, just move them to a bloat folder for something on your SD card

I'm seriously considering that Bionic.. it's just that it'll be months before that's rooted.. well, maybe weeks.

No, I'm having too much fun with my rooted Droid 3.

I have a live wallpaper on my droid 3 that the weather pops up if you tap it. Its the trees one.

And if, say, I deleted the apps rather than freezing, would I be able to get the apks from one of you fine folks and just replace them?

This is likely related to app removal, so I'll post it here for now and maybe start a new thread on it if need be (I've not yet tried any of the remedies I know about for this type of issue, just reporting this for now).

The contacts list is there as it should be, but when I touch any of contacts I get an immediate FC, "contacts storage process com.motorola.contacts has stopped."

Everything else looks normal in the application manager, same byte usage as prior to rooting and removing various apps on the safe list.

So, now I'll do the usual routine to see if it can be fixed in one of those ways. Meanwhile, anybody else seen this?

I'm a bit puzzled about that.

Meanwhile, no remedy yet.

Until there is a recovery, best not to remove anything and just freeze them. No way of knowing what stock apps are interdependent. Probably a bloat defense strategy- make em' need each other

Also, we have no idea how long it'll be before the first ROM comes along that may include stock files, etc that can restore FC issues and so on.

Frisco, you could have backedup the files using Titanium Backup. Its the next best thing next to a nandrestore.

I think its integrated into the whole contact syncing and was coded to be able to merge contact data.

I moved both of mine to a folder in my apps folder and have had no issues. I didn't freeze or delete anything though.

I found that moving media provider and media sync no longer allowed me to view my camera roll and my library in my gallery. So I put these back in the system/app directory.

Before I moved anything, my friends recent facebook pictures were shown in the gallery when i first opened it. I am trying to figure out what I moved that changed this. Now it shows my pictures and when I click on add social network at the top I get the following error:

"The application gallter (process com.motorola.gallery) has stopped working unexpectedly. Please try again"

Any ideas which apk might be causing this?

I'm new to android, but possibly insanely adventurous. I too deleted the yahoo stuff (before I learned you really should just freeze the apps) and my contacts no longer work. Feel kinda dopey. should I backup all my apps, and reset to factory? Any ideas?

EDIT- I just downloaded Go Contacts EX, it works great, could see my contacts, crisis averted!

Very nice find, hammydrizzle. Just installed, and as you said, problem solved.

You can even map the stock dialer key to invoke Go Dialer Ex. This is a Godsend if you've messed up and removed some apps such as the Yahoo ones that are laced into the stock contacts app and are causing force closes, etc.

hmmm... My contacts seem to be fine and I moved them to a subdirectory.

it seems like my universal inbox is broken too.. I can live without it but was wondering which API might be associated with this. (I put some of the social... Apk's back but nothin changed)
