Hi i need some help Metropcs is coming out with a new phone next month called the lg esteem which is basically a Lg revolution with android 2.3 i want to get either the Samsung galaxy s 4g from T mobile(4gmonthly plan) or the esteem but i need to know which is the more powerful phone because i wan't my emulators to run as smooth as possible. so which is better?

(ESTEEM)2nd gen snapdragon 1.0ghz MSM8665 + Adreno205 Gpu + android 2.3

OR

(GALAXY S)Hummingbird 1.0ghz + PowerVR SGX540 Gpu + android 2.2:thinking:

I hope you're just kidding.

The Adreno 205 is a noticeable improvement over the first-gen Adreno 200, but it's still not on part with the 540. Go with the Hummingbird-equipped device.

This is the kind of nonsense I hate seeing in these forums. A quick Google search will yield some benchmarks where 205 bested powerVR. Am I saying 205 is better? No just that some say its better slightly or on par. For you to say its not on par is ridiculous. Both gpu s are very close.

I found some old benchmarks where a G2 (Adreno 205) bested a Samsung Epix (SGX 540). The catch? It was Android 2.2 (Adreno 205) vs. Android 2.1 (SGX 540). No JIT compiler. Once put on the same Android version, the SGX spanked the Adreno.

I've benchmarked them myself on numerous phones. From top to bottom, they came out as;

SGX540 > Adreno 205 > SGX 530 > Adreno 200. It's not "nonsense" just because you disagree with it. But don't take my word for it, here's a more recent battery of tests.

Tegra 2 CPU and GPU benchmarks, Motorola Atrix 4G vs LG Optimus 2X | Android and Me

Neocore - Adreno 205 > SGX540 by about 2fps
Nenamark1 - SGX540 > Adreno 205 by about 17fps
Smartbench (games) - SGX540 > Adreno 25 by about 500pts (1900 to 1400)
GL Bench Egypt - SGX540 > Adreno 205 by about 4fps
GL Bench Pro - SGX540 > Adreno 205 by about 15fps

I left out non-GL tests such as linpack. Those are more CPU dependent. So again, don't call my post "nonsense" just because I disagreed with you. You're probably in that group that saw the preliminary G2 benchmarks over a year ago before the Galaxy line got Froyo. We were all fooled by that, but we've all had our mea cupla since.

So the sgx PowerVR SGX540 is more capable even if the snapdragon is on android 2.3 and its on android 2.2?

Going from 2.2 to 2.3 doesn't make a measurable difference in GPU related benchmarks. Going from 2.1 to 2.2 was the big jump. Since the G2 launched with 2.2 at a time when many phones were still on 2.1, this gave it an initial high benchmark compared to other phones on the market, but it was quickly eclipsed.

It's hard to find a "professional" benchmark of these devices on the same android version, but back in January I did it myself. I got the order that I listed in my previous post. I then compared the Nexus S (2.3) to an international Galaxy S (2.2) and the scores in GL-related benchmarks were similar.

Overall, the 540 is a superior GPU, even on older hardware like the Galaxy S. Newer devices using it, like the new OMAP4 line, have a higher clocked SGX540 which leads to significantly higher performance as well. That GPU has staying power.

Also Add.

Nenamark 2 SGX540 > Adreno 205 by 11 fps (11 fps vs 22 fps)
Electopia, SGX540 = Adreno 205 both score around 17 fps.

I'm not sure Neocore is a good example, SGX540 is limited by the framerate cap.

It's hardly nonsense, in some cases Adreno 205 can match SGX540 but more oftern than not SGX540 is easily ahead.

Do you have a link to those results? I'd like to see them only because I suspect that those may be influenced by the JIT compiler (2.1 vs. 2.2 benchmarks).

Nenamark 2 results are from their website, Desire HD vs Galaxy S and Electopia results I got from the posted comments on the market. I always remember Neocore maxing out at around 55.7 fps on the Galaxy S, the framerate limit is 56 fps so it can't score any higher.
