Google & Apple

there must be some agreement with Google and Apple on multitouch. In fact I read that on a tech site a few weeks back.

I have the Zune HD - multitouch.

The Pre, other HTC phones - multitouch.

The upcoming Dell mini5 - multitouch

Considering how bad palm wrap sucks on this sleek and thin phone, it's not even just about pinch and zoom anymore. it's about core functionality. To use this phone with one hand and reach across the screen to touch something is a mission sometimes. You have to hold it just right.

Makes no sense why Google would nerf their phone like that while every other major player is not. Must be some handshake agreement with Apple.

As has been said many times, the Nexus One is multi-touch.
he means nerfed multi on STOCK apps, like the stock browser.

I'll have to admit, it sucks using the Dolphin browser with multi and then you go to an app and you start trying to pinch and zoom and it won't work. it would be nice to have multi across all apps on the device. Google maps for one.

I believe the OP was referring to the lack of implementation of MT on native apps but still... extremely frustrating.

Without a doubt the HTC Bravo will have MT. I don't even care if I don't have sense when google comes out with more frequent updates than HTC (I believe?) but if Nexus One would have multitouch implemented in the browser and gallery etc. I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

i know it is hardware-capable, but it is nerfed in software. so what's the point? until they enable it, it may as well not be.

besides dolphin browser and a few apps, it's not there - besides rooting your phone and killing your warranty.

to fix the palm wrap issue, MT would have to work right on the home screens. google is going to have to enable it once they get their lips off of steve jobs' ass on this one.

I believe them leaving it out of the stock apps has to do with patents.

I hope that if Apple keeps on screwing with Google they will just implement it and deal with it later. Give a big FU to Apple.

that's what people say but

Microsoft Zune - multitouch
Palm Pre - multitouch
other android phones - multitouch
Dell Mini 5 - multitouch

are these companies magically patent proof?

The thing is... None of the above companies have any relationship with Apple. Google is NOT a hardware or software company. Google is an advertising company. Google gives free products and services (Search, Maps, 411, Android, Chrome, etc) for 1 reason... so that we use those services and they collect information about us. Then Google uses that information to create EFFECTIVE advertising... which makes them boatloads of MONEY.

Google doesn't care if you use their services on an Android, Blackberry, WebOS, Symbian or iPhone device... as long as you are using their services. Implementing pinch and zoom gestures on would violate the patent Apple believes they have. Google doesn't care if the patent is valid or not. They are choosing to respect Apple's patent to maintain a positive relationship with them. What's more important to their bottom line? Giving a few thousand Nexus One users pinch and zoom maps/browser or keeping millions of iPhone users using their services?

From a business standpoint, Google is being SMART.

so you think apple is not suing all those companies, that by your statement, are NOT respecting a patent - this includes dell, microsoft, htc, etc...

out of the kindness of their hearts?

your point is pretty ridiculous.

Did you read any of what I said? I don't think Google cares what those other companies are "getting away with" or the fact is that Apple "hasn't filed lawsuits" against those companies. Google just cares about keeping Apple as a partner and not pissing them off.

Oh... and just because Apple isn't suing those companies yet, doesn't mean they won't. And Apple has publicly shown itself to be "irritated" by Palm and the Pre... saying they would "protect their patents." Pre rattled back in an interview saying they have patents too and that Apple violates them. Then you even have the whole Pre syncing with iTunes mess that got Palm into trouble with USB Forum.

There is nothing ridiculous at all about what I said. It is spot on. Google is a money making company. Plain and simple. The whines of a few people about pinch and zoom is not worth risking losing Apple as a partner. They are business partners.... even if Google implemented it, & Apple didn't sue them... it doesn't mean their business relationship couldn't become stained.
Google wants Apple as a partner and doesn't care about your little tantrum about pinch and zoom. As far as they are concerned... they probably think, "If you want pinch and zoom gestures... fine! Go get them... on an iPhone or a Palm Pre! Oh and by the way, Thanks for using the Google Maps app on those devices!"

oh what you said is very ridiculous. apple would sit by and let major companies in the smartphone category use multitouch without a suit is a ridiculous statement anyway you look at it.

it's a ludicrous statement. you should try a different angle.

also, you hyperfocusing on pinch n zoom is pretty out there since my statement has more to do with MT affecting basic functionality, not pinch n zoom.

next.

Well... the N1 has multitouch in the OS and 3rd party apps. So... what multitouch functionality has you so bothered because it seems that the people who complain are complaining that the can't pinch and zoom their browser, maps and photos.

What else is missing that is driving you so insane?

palm wrap. i mentioned it in my initial post.

this phone is very sexy and thin and sleek. but with one handed operation, when you reach across the screen, palm wrap screws with input because it is taking up the lone single touch the screen can register. this is basic functionality that is affected.

I cant be the only one who hates pinch zoom? I prefer to use one finger to navigate, this way I can use the phone with just one hand.
I won't say I hate pinch zoom, but if I had to choose one method, I prefer the zoom buttons.

Pinch zoom is not bad, but it doesn't do anything that our phone can't do. Just looks cooler doing it, which is basically Apples business strategy, doesn't matter what it does, as long as it looks good doing it.

Ironically about pinch and zoom is that during the Ipad debut Jobs surfed and navigated using 'double tap' almost the entire time.

Googles too fearful of losing default search/map/YT access to iPhones to give us default MT. MS and Palm have nothing to lose. Apples MT patents are weak at best , its a verbal agreement not a legal threat one.

I totally agree here but for the hell of it I'm going to play devil's advocate a little here. Google by releasing a whole line of phones that are seamingly more and more representing Google the company its self AND android is eventually going to strain its relationship with apple, the droid was "with google" the N1 is now "by google" and while Apple is way to fcking arrogant and cocky to realise that the nexus one and other Android smartphones will and sort of are going to knock the iPhone off its high horse, when apple realises that they are going to shit bricks and basically not be "bffs 4 evar <3333" with google. Think about it, these "partnerships" (I put that in quotes because its not really a true partnership) are hard to maintain especially when you have technologys that are converging on serious competition. Android/Google phones are going to fly right in front of Apples iPhone profit train and their not going to have it.

i really wish this guy would explain why apple has let microsoft, dell, htc - get away with using MT. google's choices do not explain this inconvenient fact.

I don't know why Apple hasn't filed suit against them. I never claimed to know. If you will (once again) re-read my posts... I tell you why GOOGLE doesn't implement MT.

But... if it will keep your ass from being chafed ... I will offer my opinion as to why Apple hasn't done anything to those companies. Because like another poster mention... the patents on MT that Apple has on file are weak. There were companies working on MT before Apple was doing it on iPhone. Apple knows they would lose in court, so why bother?

But... (and I know with you... I am beating a dead horse) I will re-iterate... Google DOES NOT CARE that Apple isn't going after Palm, Microsoft, Dell or HTC. Google wants Apple to keep Google Maps, Youtube and Google search (in Safari) on the millions of iPhones throughout the world.

well great, so it took you this many posts to agree with my initial point, that this is a voluntary 'gentleman's' agreement, not one driven by real lawsuit fear. i will re-quote my original post in case you missed it:

so are you done arguing with yourself?
