Root Not Sure of what to do?

I have been thinking about rooting for quite some time but have yet to make the plunge. I have only actually had the phone since the beginning of July. Now there is a new update available for the phone. I am unsure if I should install the update and wait to root or if I should root.

I also have a few more questions.

1. Does rooting the phone require a new ROM / Kernal?

2. How will it affect my current programs? My Launcher (Go), and my other files such as media, Pictures?

3. After the root can I restore my SD Card back to its current state? Or do I need to just worry about my files and not the programs I have saved to it.

4. Last thing for now , I am running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. Will I be able to access my phone's memory after rooting on my desktop? or will it still be just the SD Card? (Thinking it would be nice to just delete stuff from Nautilus)

1.no you will not need a new rom or kernel. you will just get a custom stock rom and kernel.
2.it should not delete any data when you root. but it is recommended that you wipe your phone and card so that you have a clean environment to get your phone rooted. backup accordingly
3.yes the card will not be affected by rooting
4.not too familiar with them but i believe you should be ok. if it works for your phone now then it should work when you are rooted. nothing should change that.

Since your running linux already, I will explain it like this. Rooting your phone has the same effect as adding your user to the root group.

if all goes well it should be like 5-15 min tops. pretty quick. just read the steps and be prepared and you should be good to go.

big recommendation for ya, right after rooting, make a nandroid of your current setup with the wimax keys etc etc... basically select darn near everything in the "what to backup" section for the first nand, after that, your nands can be far more basic. Also, if you plan on gettin into the flashing of different roms, then i suggest amon_ra(as would darn near everyone else in this forum(chime in if anyone disagrees)) If youre considering rooting to get rid of the craptastic bloatware, then titanium backup pro allows for freezing of apk's as opposed to just removing them. Theyll take up space on your device still, but wont be allowed to run unless you unfreeze them. Anyways, there are TONS of other little tidbits we can fill ya in on if you feel so inclined, but theres a eentsy weentsy portion of the tip of the iceberg. Happy rooting man!!

I always make sure to tell new rooters to nandroid first then back that nandroid up to your pc. Also make sure to select Wimax in the backup options. Then do it again and store that nandroid somewhere else.
