Root ROOTING For Dummies Guide.....the Gingerbread Edition

Ok so I'm running everything on a mac. I have been following the instructions thus far, but when it comes to Ubuntu thats when things start to get sticky. I run the debs in the other software portion of the updater but come up with an error message that reads "Could Not Download Full Repository Indexes" It goes on to state either it doesn't exist or I have a bad connection. I tired using an ethernet and no go. Any suggestions?

What are you trying to update?

There is a tread from a few days ago that was about rooting from a mac. It should be just a couple of pages back. There are several ways you can do it.

1. Parallels
2. Bootcamp
3. VMware or Virtualbox
4. A linux live cd should work.

A new 16GB class 10 microSD card arrived at my door today. So I'd like to use that one (partioned) instead of the stock 8GB card in my EVO. I've been using Titanium backup pro to backup all my apps and have been using the MiKG 2.5 ROM. I want to make sure I do everything in the right order to change over to the new card. Are these the right steps?

1) Run Titanium backup of user apps
2) Create a Nandroid
3) Backup SD card to computer
3) Power off, swap in new card
4) Partition card
5) Wipe data, cache and dalvik cache
6) Flash ROM
7) Flash AMON recovery
8) Install Titanium backup
9) Move Titanium backup directory from computer to SD card
10) Reinstall apps via Titanium

I also added flash AMON. I do that right after flashing the ROM right?

amon ra is a recovery. you do not flash it. if you have clockwork mod recovery then i recommend that you switch to amon ra 2.3. it is a much better recovery. and if you have not switched to it yet then i would recommend that you do it before you partition your card. if you have it already then proceed with the partitiong and flashing.

This is my fisrt post on this forum. I would like to thank everyone involved with this grand task of putting a step by step procedure in getting S-Off and rooting my Evo phone. This is my first attempt at rooting and it went off flawlessly. My only concern now is.....is there any precautionary measure I must perform on my Evo phone to make sure I am not "auto updated" when the next OS revision is pushed out? I would hate to have the phone "auto update" and loose root. Again.....Thanks A MILLION for this great post and thread.

I already have AMON RA as per your original instructions. If I change microSD cards do I have to add it (I guess boot to it) again? Thought I had it, now I'm confused again. Sorry.

once you have amon ra, you can toss that file away or rename it so that hboot will not keep asking you to update each time.

I guess I was assuming that the wipe would remove AMON and you would then need to add it back. So I'm guessing the recovery does not get wiped in the process of either the wipe or the ROM install?

I noticed a post on the MikROMs thread where they were recommending a wipe of everything (factory reset, cache, dalvik, data, boot, system, .android-secure, SD-ext). If I did that, would it wipe away the AMON recovery?

there are three os running on your phone. two are very simple and tiny. one is your hboot and then the other is your recovery. and the big one is the android os that your roms run on. so when you do a factory reset or wiping of any sort will not touch your recovery or cause you to loose root. if you follow the steps in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html, you should be good to go. now if you are planning to partition your card then yes you need to add wiping sd ext. but the others you mentioned will get wiped if you use superwipe. at least the bare minimum would be to wipe data, dalvik cache and cache.

Ah, thanks for straightening me out. I think I got it. Since your are doing the wiping from the recovery it makes sense that it would not be impacted as well. Very cool.

You are trying to flash this in hboot correct? Are you using the original card or a different one?

You can take the PC36IMG file off of your card for space or just rename it if you want to keep it on there. Just make sure to make a nandroid backup before you flash anything and keep a couple of nandroids with your wimax keys in a safe place on your pc.

Finally after lurking in the forums for awhile rooted my EVO yesterday. Guide was great. Nice and smooth process. I then flashed the ROM with the OTA 4.53 in it and it seems to have fixed voice search. No bugs that I have found yet. Now I need to find a solution to HDMI mirroring and of anyone can tell me what is the best app for wireless tether for that ROM with gingerbread I would appreciate it.
Thanks for posting this guide ocnbrze

you need a kernel that supports hdmi mirroring and the only one right now is the chop suey kernel then you need the app from teamwin found in the market. i use the app found in this guide for tehthering: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...net-tethering-w-evo-4g-3g-wireless-wired.html

hope that helps. any more questions please feel free to ask.
