Help Should I avoid the 2.3 update?

I have a HTC Desire Z and hate the fact that the texts disappear so have been backing up once a day with MyBackupPro.

I was going to upgrade to 2.3 once it was out, but haven't yet and now I see here that people are having all kinds of problems with it, such as the phone crashing during calls and the Home screen taking forever to get back to normal after an app has been closed.

Are there any plusses to this update, please? Thanks.

I have noticed the home screen updating faster than before when changing the orientation. Before if I were in an app with the keyboard out and exit out of the app to the home screen, it would take a while before the home screen draws. Now that time is much shorter.

The Gingerbread has a few more widgets and updates to some widgets. I notice the HTC Twitter widget will open up the web page if there is a web page link on the tweet. It saves me time from opening the tweet and then tapping again to open the web page.

I have received the occasional error message about the phone process dying, but I just clear the message and everything continues. I haven't had any issues where the phone drops calls or anything really disruptive.

Overall, I would say my experience is rather positive.

Thanks for the info. Can anyone please confirm if it's sorted out the text message problem? That's what I'd mainly be upgrading for. Thanks.

Hi, I posted last week on a couple of the "texting problem" threads:

Try disabling the keyboard shortcuts:
  • Settings
  • Applications
  • Quick Launch
  • Long press on any shortcut to disable

I have now used it all weekend, and I have not seen the issue once. Its fixed it! :D

Hope this helps

Pete :D:D

Dear all,

Its not only about the msg issue, i am facing the system crash issue on a frequent basis and it is unpredectible, it could happend any time, sometimes it happend when it was in my pocket, and during the call is also very frequent.

The overall performance of the phone has droped which can be easliy identified. The msg box takes hell lot of time to get loaded and to show all the msges.

The only gud thing with this 2.3 upgrade was that it was supporting the divx compatibility, which was not the 2.3 feature, it was htc who intoduced this with the 2.3 release. Earlier i was using the vplayer to see the divx format videos.

Im not sure why the release is working properly on some devices and not on the others, my friends upgrade working properly with not a single issue. The diff i found is that he bought it 4-5 months later than mine. And i had recieved one more update aroung 5 months before the 2.3.3 version, but he had recived only 2.3.3 update.

So in my opinion all of us who has recieved the earlier update (before 2.3.3) might be facing issues here with this update.

Please share ur opinion guys

Thanks

I got my Desire Z the first week it was released here back in the beginning of November. I did receive another update around March. Then I got the Gingerbread update. I waited almost a week after it was available before installing Gingerbread on my phone. I found that it was overall a good update for me.

There are a number of nice features with this Gingerbread update. The home screens switch between portrait and landscape much faster. Before I would have delays if I'm in an app with the keyboard open and then press <home>. The Twitter for HTC widget is improved. When you tap on a tweet with a link, it opens the link below the tweet. I just found out yesterday that moving objects around the home screens is improved. Before if your home screen were full, you had to delete an item before you can move objects around. Now if you move an object over another one, the objects swap places. I also love the new battery widget.

There were a few minor blips that I notice. I seem to have a few error messages about some Android system has failed. It doesn't seem to affect anything. I assume the process closed and then restarted. I did have some issues with FriendCaster. Not sure if it was with Gingerbread or if it is caused by having FC installed on my tablet as well with different notification settings. At one point I decided to use a task killer to kill FC and then my phone became unstable after that. I rebooted and everything is fine now. A new FC update seemed to have fixed the issues I was having, so I think it may be the app. In any case, I haven't use the task killer since and my phone has been working quite well since then.

By the way, I'm on Bell Canada.

So in my opinion this realese seems to be inconsistent . In some phone it is working fine while on others it is nnot.
If factory reset is the only option for us , can anyone suggest whether we new dthe repurchase the app from the market after the factory reset or it will automatically identify by the the device number and it won't ask to purchase those apps form the market again.

Thanks

App purchases from Android Market are linked to the Google Account used to make them. Provided you use the same account on the device all previous purchases will be available for reinstall at no charge.

Thanks slug,
That really helped me out, i did factory reset and i am able to reinstall all the my prev purchased apps without repurchasing them.

Now here is the update guys.

I mailed to the htc customer support regarding the sys crash after 2.3 rom update, they said do the factory reset which will definitly resolve the prob. And to backup the applications they suggested to download the ADAO file manager, and take the backup of all the apps installed.

I did the factory reset after taking the backup of the contacts and the apps.

I was under the impression that after doing the factory reset i will get the previous os version automatically, but let me tell you my dear friends that even after doing the factory reset i have the same updated OS version In my phone that is 2.3.3.

Then I realized that why the customer support use to call it clear storage or hard reset. It doesn't downgrades your phone it basically clears the previous patch and makes ur phone ready after removing all the prev installed apps and data and then restores the fresh patch iguess, im not sure.

But since last 4 hrs there is no sys crash, but im still watching it, i didnt installed all my prev apps, lets see if there wont be any sys crash today then i'll start installing my prev apps.

Those who would like to hard reset their phone please google it for the steps, but i will suggest to wait till my tomorrows update .

Thanks

Thanks for all the info. If it's not fixing the msg issue, then they've failed dismally there. That's my main bugbear with the handset

I updated to 2.3 a couple of weeks ago and was initially quite happy with it. I found improved battery life (day and a half instead of a day), and a variety of usability improvements.

I've now run into an issue that I suspect is related to the update. I cannot authenticate any twitter profile using any twitter app as the native browser does not load the twitter oauth page. When I copy and paste the url into Opera it loads ok.

I suspect I should have waited longer before updating...let others work through the bugs ;-)

mine is 2.3.3 rooted with virtuous sense 2.0 rom installed on it, and it works perfectly nice. like others said, performance improved, oc to 1.0Ghz without any issues, battery life increase (daily heavy usage about 13-15 hours). and since i use custom rom, i can customize my DZ appearance.

about any issues, just make sure you perfectly wipe your device before updating to 2.3.3 (i mean data, cache, even dalvik cache), to make sure everything will go smoothly like i have now.

hope this will help u ^^

Why should it be necessary to factory-reset my phone just for an update? I don't see that as the sign of a successful update, and HTC haven't made any mention of that, themselves.

And as smeetsinha hasn't replied, can anyone else please confirm if they are still getting text message issues following the update? Thanks.

Sorry fot being late here.
Dear the msg prob is not rectified fully here in sense sometimes it take 4-5 sec to open the inbox get loaded, I don't know what process is running behind to take that much time. I have activated the HTC sense also with the phone locater on in my device.

And the 2nd problem in msg I found that in some of the sms it doesn't shows the contact name with the image, infact it only shows his/her contact number only. Even those where known contacts and were present in my contact list. When I tap on the number and select to call, then it shows the name and image while calling but not showing name and image in the msg inbox.

Yesterday I again reset my device, let's see and wait, this time I even didnt activated my google account on my account and sync .

Only configured my exchange active accout with gmail and restored the phone account contacts. Will keep update here.
