Does he have the same phone? Is his work phone, a Sprint phone?

No he has a flip phone with the radio thing, but it is sprint. With my EVO I had great signal at home so i don't know what the deal is. But since I'm getting 0-1 bar internet surfing is way slow. Should I take it back to bb for an exchange? I had the nexus s too, with the same problem before I exchanged for this one.

I would contact Sprint first like Marctronixx said, then go from there.

Will keep any notifications of PRL updates in this thread. Will also try to keep the most current PRL # in the thread title. This thread has some great discussion on what PRL updates do and how they work.

It is inevitable that someone will always ask "what is a PRL?" or "will this give me X boost in speed..." :)

updating the prl is a pain, have to go back and change the proxy settings back to 0 and 0.0.0.0 every time....

First I've heard of this. I never have to do that.

I wonder if any dev can hack a PRL and give us use of LTE Advanced... just a thought

Not without an LTE Advanced radio. ;)

Have you ran any speed tests since you updated?

No, I haven't run any. I didn't notice anything different so it didn't occur to me.

I wonder if maybe certain areas of the country are being affected because Sprint is doing something with the network? Idk, just a thought. That is just odd that so many people would be affected. I wonder if any uprooted (meant to say unrooted, not uprooted) people are experiencing this? Lol I guess they wouldn't say at xda because they're all rooted over there. Maybe some of our forum mates who have already updated will give us some feedback. I guess until it is figured out it might be best not to update to test it though. I just might be lucky.

Well if you don't mind please run a speedtest to see what your speeds are as well as ping time as well as your location if you don't mind. Thank you

hey muffin,

i have not done the update.. what is your preferred speed test app. ill try it before and after i do the prl....

im on prl 21081 currently and of course im stock non rooted.

I use the speedtest.net app, its always been reliable for me.

Edit: Ok, I reset the prl to 21081 and everything is back to normal. For those that need assistance what you need is the 21081 zip file. Unzip it and place it on your sd card(I placed mines on the root of the card, not sure if that will make a difference). Then dial ##775# then it will ask for your msl code, if this code doesn't work download and install the epst.apk I attached then try the code again. For those that are rooted just use mslreader on the market for those that aren't rooted you can call sprint and ask nicely or use the cdma workshop method. Once you enter your msl you will then see the option to update prl, then the next step will allow you to select the 21081 file that you unzipped. Once you select ok it should reboot, if not then just reboot and when it comes back up you should be good to go.

so muffin, it seems you can confirm the PRL is definitely altering your speeds? well do you still need an unrooted user to check?

id guess ill update it at some point unless sprint realizes its causing issues in the wild.

Well since its fairly easy to switch back it would be good to know. I am extremely curious as to why this is happening.

I bit the bullet on the new PRL. Call me a guinea pig.
I'm non-rooted. Here is what I found using the Speakeasy Speed test
(Same server, approximate same conditions - 3G: 2 fluctuating bars; 4G: 1 or 2 bars pretty steady)

Before the PRL update (21081):
3G: .57 Mbps down .32 Mbps up

4G: 5.53 Mbps down 1.16 Mbps up

After the PRL update (50580):
3G: .15 Mbps down .08 Mbps up
3G: .20 Mbps down .09 Mbps up
3G: .14 Mbps down .08 Mbps up
3G: .30 Mbps down .08 Mbps up

4G: 10.03 Mbps down 1.14 Mbps up
4G: 5.21 Mbps down .92 Mbps up
4G: 7.35 Mbps down 1.26 Mbps up

Interpret how you will, could all be coincidental. Loading AndroidForums.com for example seemed to take longer post update (no specific evidence, just an opinion). I wouldn't recommend this PRL update.

Well what a difference a few hours make. I went to bed after my last post because as you can see I have to get up pretty early to get ready for work. Anyway, last night my speeds were normal. This morning they are awful. I have NEVER had 3G speeds this horrible EVER. The crazy thing is, either I am just not fully awake yet or can't follow instructions, but I can't get any of the menus to work. I have my MSL but that isn't the problem. I don't even get the menu when I punch in the codes. It dials the number instead and I get a recorded message saying that I dialed an invalid number or code. Needless to say I feel like a total idiot. I can follow instructions to root, run adb commands, etc., but can't do this. I also hope no one updated thinking it was OK because of me. :(

Fwiw jus to let you know what I've done, I downloaded both of muffins attached files and placed them at the root of the sd card. Using the phone's dialer, entered ##775#, then pushed the dial button. That is when I received the invalid phone number / code message. I tried the method both ways... Before downloading the second file and after, and I did unzip the 21081 file.

Also, in order to provide as much info as possible, I am rooted on the latest updated stock ROM and do have Google Voice.

I think I've typed this a 1000 times at this point, but have you guys tried going into ##3282#, Edit, Enter MSL, select EVDO, ensure Preferred mode is set to automatic. WHen I updated to the latest radio it somehow bumped me to 1x only. I went and checked this setting and it wasn't set to automatic anymore. wHen I updated to automatoic it I got 3g back. I'll wait for some results before I take the latest PRL.

Also if you are a stock rom or unrooted your signal will always show 3g even when you are on 1x so you have to use speedtest to confirm you are on 3g.
