Galaxy S or HTC Desire S

Hey,

I am planning to buy an android phone. Confused between two models. They are Samsung Galaxy i9000 or HTC Desire S. THey cost the same in my country.

I am impressed with the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (especially the AMOLED screen, 16gb internal memory and the camera clarity but there is no flash).

I am also worried about icecream sandwich not being rolled out on the Galaxy S as it has got 2 major updates already froyo and gingerbread. So will it get icecream sandwich as well.

on the other hand, I like the HTC sense UI and the Desire has has 768 MB of ram and a camera flash as well (but camera not as good as galaxy s). I don't care about the unibody design. Since it has been released on gingerbread, it will definitely get the next update.

Please suggest me something.

These are two very evenly matched phones and users are going to choose one based on their own needs, for me the 4" SAMOLED screen, better gaming performance and much better video/audio format compatibility would make me choose the Galaxy S.

As for Android versions, I would guess if the Desire S gets ICS then so will the Galaxy S, it doesnt really matter which gets it first.

But it's unknown territory for sure, allot of people didn't even expect the Galaxy S to get Froyo and now it's on Gingerbread.

So do you say that, the 768 MB of RAM and the LED Flash on the HTC Desire S does not matter. Is the Samsung Galaxy S such a great phone.

I've heard rumours as well saying that the Galaxy S will get the ice cream sandwich update as google wants to run their upcoming software on each and every android device. Is it right or is it just a rumour.

Only you can tell us if these two features are importent to you, for me the lack of the LED light was not a big deal, the extra memory will help in future apps, however how long will that that be? I don't know.

I think Google would iike the update on every device that can run it but I don't think anyone can tell you for sure if the SGS will get ICS.

Hey thanks for the reply. I love the S AMOLED screen on the Galaxy S and even its high capable media features. On the other side, I like the HTC desire S aluminium unibody and the camera flash. But as I have to choose one of those, then I would choose, Galaxy S. Is that a correct decision.

is there any other android phone that has features of both galaxy s and HTC desire S. I am looking for great media playback capability, good graphics, RAM, and a camera flash. If there is no such device in the Galaxy S price, then I will go with the Galaxy S. :)

I fairness the Desire S will handle most media types but you will need to download a video player from the market to enable the same kind of compatibly the Galaxy S has by default.

Both are good phones, it all depends which is best phone for you and I can't answer that. :p

I think most of the new dual core phones will provide all these features accept media playback, only the Galaxy range seem to do well there. Tegra 2 devices are just awful even with 3rd party video players.

So if I download a media player such as mobo player or rock player on the desire S, will I be able to play all types of media files that samsung galaxy S does?

Samsung Got it right for SGSL and better phones. But when you go GalaxyAce and lower, no they dont play all formats out of the box either.

Different hardware, the Ace uses Qualcomm MSM7227, where as the SGS and SGS II use Cortex A8(Hummingbird) and A9(Exynos).

It isnt just about software, even with the same software more formats will play properly on the SGS/SGSII than Tegra 2 for example. I've never actually owned a phone using a Qualcomm SoC so I've never had time to test what they can and can't play with 3rd party video players.

I like the media capabilities of the galaxy S and the extra RAM on the Desire S.

but my main concern is which of these two would get the next ice cream sandwich update.

If the Galaxy S i9000 gets the next ice cream sandwich update then I will go for it because it is cheaper than the desire S in my country (india) and it has loads of space 16GB compared to 1.1 GB of the desire S.

As I have stated before, even if Galaxy S doesnt get ICS via official update, you can manually flash it to ICS, that is if you'd want it. As of now, no one actually can confirm if the phones will get ICS or not.

ok then, one last concern. I am worried about the user available RAM on the galaxy S. even though it comes with 512 MB of RAM , the user available RAM is around 311 MB. Even the galaxy SL has 478 MB but why does the original S have so less amount of memory on it. Will it be enough for daily usage. :(

The Galaxy SL has a larger RAM module, about 600+MB, leaving 478mb total, while the Galaxy S has a 512 module. However this is offset by the better GPU of the Galaxy S, making things run smoothly even with less RAM. In fact, in some cases the original Galaxy S runs more smoothly than the SL.

Hey can u tell me what's the user available RAM on the Galaxy S after the gingerbread update 2.3.3 because I've heard that the update improved performance with RAM as well.

Ok, then my main concern on the Galaxy S is the RAM. its around 329 MB after installing gingerbread. Will it be enough or should I choose a different smartphone. If yes, then please suggest me some of those in galaxy S range.

Very close match...never used both but from the memory specs, go with the HTC Desire S, has more than the Galaxy S.

But I've heard that there are many problems with the Desire S like the phones often being given for repairs within 2 months from purchase and even the wifi problem too.

is that true. Do you still recommend the Desire S??

"has more" That's a really insistful post, i'm sure everybody appreciated that.

Quick rundown for you.

CPU: 1GHz Single Core Scorpion vs 1GHz Cortex A8, Winner - Desire HD
GPU, Adreno 205 vs PowerVR SGX540, Winner - Galaxy S
Display: 3.7” SLCD vs 4” SAMOLED, Winner - Galaxy S
Memory: 512MB vs 768MB, Winner - Desire S
Storage: 1.1GB vs 8/16GB Winner - Galaxy S
Weight: 130g vs 119g, Winner - Galaxy S
Camera: 5MP(LED Flash) vs 5MP(No Flash), Winner - Desire S
Battery: 1450 mAh vs 1500 mAh, Winner - Galaxy S
Media Compatibility, Winner - Galaxy S

It’s a very black and white comparison and the difference in most of these is so close it just won’t matter.

I've not heard of that, have you tried visiting the home threads for those phones? You can get a general outlook on how badly something can run just by seeing how many 'broken phone' threads there are.

Taking a quick peek though, does look like you might want to go with the Galaxy, for the sake of not having to worry about those reported issues.

Oh and I'm sure I appreciate your 'holier than thou' post.

Built in memory, the Desire has 1124, Galaxy has 1024, that's what I meant.

No it doesnt, it has 512mb of memory and comes in 8GB or 16GB versions, where are you getting 1GB(1024) from?

Desire S has 1.1GB(1124) of internal storage and 768mb of memory, I listed this information above and you still got it wrong.
