New Skytex skypad 7in

I don't see the problem going "off brand" as long as the warranty and support is there? I mean, there's companies like Archos which seems to sell a lot of stuff, but I've read their customer support is crap? idk...sometimes I feel I'm just paying for the "name" and not necessarily a better product :p Curious to hear other ppls' inputs.

Hi guys,

I just wanted to let you know, while we're still a relatively young brand, we definitely stand behind our products. With SKYTEX, you're covered on parts and labor for a year. We're also committed to supporting our devices with firmware upgrades, and supporting our customers through our toll-free line.

We're gadget enthusiasts (geeks) ourselves, and we're doing our best to establish ourselves as a brand leader in portable computing and entertainment devices. We realize this is an ambitious goal, and it will take time. But we plan to accomplish this by offering a range of products, offering great value across different price points, and following that up with timely and quality customer service.

Anyway, enough of my spiel. If you're interested in seeing our 2.3.3 build of the tablet in action, you can check out this vid: ‪Skypad Alpha Android 2.3 Tablet by SKYTEX‬‏ - YouTube

Thanks!

Thanks Dvalin... I've been in touch with slatedroid. They just got an evaluation unit in today. I'm going to pursue all of the communities to see what we can do to make our Android builds even better. We definitely have some more Android tablet goodness planned for this year and next. More info coming soon (hopefully!)...

I just got mine and out of the box it is pretty impressive. Blows the doors off the Flytouch 3. Yeah I know it isn't driving the big display or have the extras like RJ45 GPS but still very impressive. By far the best 7" I have owned or tried out. Now we wait on longevity. I am disappointed that the is a custom ROM available eay but I got the B version so I have to wait a little longer.

I have been pretty busy doing my best to jack it up but for the most part it seems bullet proof. Had issues with the Firmware install prog and they have great support. Nice to talk to somebody who doesn't assume you are a techless wonder.

So far rooted, Gapps installed with full working market, recognizes the pad as a SX-SP700. No joy on Netflix, audio no video. Wifi is a little weak but not bad enough to really complain. Trying out Wifi Fixer now. Very adequate speakers for wathing movie or listning to music in a normal home type environment. I think wih a good EQ APk they could be tweaked nicely.

I have been dinking with this thing pretty much all day since 6 Am so I am kind of fried. But quick highlights:

Boot time, about 23 seconds from button to unlock.
Video Playback, nothing I have thrown at it has had any problem including a couple of 1080 BR rips.
Even with Gapps installed I am still managing about 312M free memory.

System has a nice solid feel, touchscreen is responsive. Comes with a stand that makes it handy for watching a movie in bed or e-reading. I ahven't done a real up time test on the battery but I never got below 25% all day between sleep mode, running it, and off. I would guess I got a good 3 hours out of it at least, wifi was on the whole time. Once I get my Bluetooth headphones I'll run a full test with everything turned on and a movie looping.

So far I can say that the extra 20 to 30 dollars to get another tab with capacitive touch doesn't seem like it would be worth it. this is a strong pad so far.

While netflix isn't officially supported on the device, I managed to get it working by installing version 1.2.2. When it asks to update it I decline. It's not the most elegant work around, but it does the trick for me.

LOL you are psychic. I just finished downloading all the netflix apps I could find and was going to go through them one at a time. Now I know where to start.

Your not the only one that feel that way. Products like.....APPLE!!!! Over prices product, that seems to stay behind the curve for sake of the NON-techies......Yes they are making their money. But what is crazy the people that buy and think they got the best!!!OMGLMBO

Come on now, be fair. The iPad is priced in line with many other tablets on the market. The build quality is high, the warranty is second to none, customer acceptance and approval is sky high, and there are large numbers of applications optimized for the iPad.

Lots of cheap tablets out there with many coming form China. Some of these tablets are the same, just re-branded.

You do not like the iPad, and that is fine. Just be accurate and a tad more fair. The iPad popularized the format and Apple does it well. Millions of users can't all be fools, can they, now.

Do you manufacturer the tablet or is it a rebranded tablet from China?

I agree. But one really needs to do their research. The web is useless in some cases because as soon as someone has a problem with their device, they tell the planet how much brand X sucks and plenty of people jump in to agree and many more disagree.

The problem with tablets is the really cheap tablets have a confusing genealogy. Brand A, Brand C, and Brand 4L might be the same tablet, just carrying a different name and plenty of hype. You can purchase some increadably cheap tablets, and I would wonder about them.

Joe can correct me if I am wrong but the tablets are ordered and assembled in China to Skytex specifications as opposed to the grab the generic parts and slap it together of the superpad/flytouch variety.

I find the bigger and the whinier the bitching the more likely I am to try a product. The average "THISTHINGISAPIECEOFCRAPICAN"TBELIEVEIGOTRIPPEDOFFOMFG!!!!" person is also the one who calls tech support because they can't turn on the computer and has been pressing the power button on the monitor for an hour and a half.

It doesn't take too long to figure out the electronics worth the risk, the toughest part is reliable resellers/distributors. Once you have that licked any inconvenience is usually minor.

This is correct. While rebranding would've been easier, cheaper and likely quicker-to-market, we wanted to make sure the device met certain standards of quality on the component level. We truly believe it's the best in its class/price range, and we back that up with comprehensive customer/tech support and a 1 year warranty on parts/labor.

I use the Skytex Skypad Alpha pretty much all day, everyday...and I admit it is
a dynamic introductory tablet. I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone and everyone. You get MORE than your monies worth out of it. It is blazing fast and has plenty of storage space which you can extend with a micro-sdcard. You will be happy with the price...as you should be able to get one for just about $150.00...and if you can't, I'll point you to the place I got mine.
You cannot go wrong. Rugged, asthetically great, performance outstanding, and the speed of a much higher grade chip.Go for it friend-go for it. You'll be glad you did and you can thank me after you've received yours. It is guaranteed to keep you busy!

I've bought one and I must say, it's spectacular. I've piddled with other tablets before, so I have a handle on what they should feel like - the Skypad is amazing. The screen is resistive, but incredibly sensitive (it's nothing but a thing if you're heavy handed. Light touches don't work, which I like because my huge hands tend to bump things on accident) and plays games well. Angry Birds was my first choice in a game, and the Skypad rocks it solidly.

The Getjar marketplace is nice, and the Skypad is well suited as an ebook reader (which I now take advantage of by loading my college textbooks on) and I'm madly in love with it.

My only advice to Skytex? Make a leatherette folio with a bluetooth keyboard specifically for your tablet. That's all that I find lacking is a nice folio solution.

The stuff that comes bundled with it is nicely done, as well. The stand is a bit chunky but works great, and the earbuds have good sound quality though not in-ear (which I prefer.)

The only thing I must point out, is that the on-screen-keyboard is hard to use if you have large hands like I do. I find myself using the stylus on that. Smaller handed people (i.e., my girlfriend) don't seem to have that problem. XD

I can only recommend it. It outclasses some of the tablets I've seen at school in looks, and is highly functional.

Just ordered mine through the Groupon for $129 - and it will only work for me if I can access Android Market and Gapps. I have never rooted before. Thoughts for a newbie? Suggestions where to go for help?

Best place to start is xda-developers.com. but there are a few apps that might be able to root ur tablet. I had originally posted this so that some devs would pick it up. Hasn't happened yet. I only assume because there hasn't been enough ruckus about it yet
