Help Recycler virus on SD-Card

Hello,

Yesterday I wanted to transfer files from my HTC Desire HD to my PC. I wasn't able to acces my folders, I got the message: "Cannot find the file L:\RECYCLER\0xFFD124566.exe."

After some googling I found out this is the Recycler virus, some sort of virus which put itself in the bin and autoruns itself. I tried to remover it with all sort of scanners, and it just doesn't work. Even 2 pc's are now infected I guess.

Does one of you have the perfect solution for me? As I'm really a noob at this, please explain in easy steps. I guess formatting would be the easiest, but wouldn't I lose my Whatsapp and Text messages (with all my pictures and movies)? And in what way should I format it, if so?

If it is a virus it would be on your computer and not your phone.

After a quick bit of googling it seems this particular type of virus (there are different variants), will infect anything windows detects as removable storage. That's probably how you got the virus - did you plug your phone into a different PC than normal recently?

I would recommend you boot windows in safe mode (keep mashing the F8 button whilst it is powering up on most PCs, and then pick safe mode with networking) and try running your antivirus software then. I don't know which programs you've already tried, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is pretty useful: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download

Formatting your card would probably work, but like landovr pointed out, your PC could well reinfect it. You should scan both your PC and the card at once.

Thank you for your reply.

I didn't, just don't know how I got infected. Tried to clean my PC with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware but it didn't even find anything with an extensive search.

Before I knew it was a virus I tried it at the pc at my parents as well, same message. Guess that one got infected as well. Afterwards I scanned with a legal up-to-date version of Norton but Norton didn't find anything as well.

I just removed the Recycler folder with the Astro App, now it's gone but when I connected to my laptop again it didn't work.

Hope we can solve it now as I guess there will me more people with this problem in a few weeks!
