I know I did this once a long time ago but have but over time have restored the ERIS a couple times. Can someone remind me how to get Hboot to S-OFF again?

The typical / traditional / best way of doing this was to install the original leaked 2.1 root ROM (not to be confused with a "regular" 2.1 leak).

However, if you have ever installed any "regular" 2.1 leaks, then you did not have this option.

First, what is your HBOOT version of your phone? This is important since there have been issues (bricking) with phones that have a 1.46.0000 S-ON bootloaders while trying to obtain an S-OFF bootloader while using the erisengspl.zip flashable file method (that particular method (using erisengspl.zip) only seems to work for an 1.49.0000 S-ON bootloader).

As erisuser1 / bftb0 has mentioned on numerous occasions, flashing the bootloader is the single most dangerous thing you can do on your phone:

Okay, update. I don't know if this is related to the flashed S-OFF. But I've begun having 3G data drops. If I switch to airplane mode and back it comes back but I'm starting over again, from scratch (stock). I'm not certain but I think this flash began my troubles with the data drops. Strange.

The bootloader is no longer active in any way, shape, or form when the ROM is running - so it is 100% certain that what you are experiencing is not due to the S-OFF bootloader. A ROM could (in principle) be responsible for that behavior, but I sort of doubt that, too.

If you used the "root" PB00IMG.zip install to get S-OFF, then it flashed an older radio firmware to the phone (v2.40.00.01.22). I suppose that could cause trouble, but I'm sort of skeptical of that, too. You might want to try a PRL update first (*228 option 2 iirc) before worrying about the radio.

If you want to try the most recent radio, look for a file called "2.42.02.10.29.zip" over on XDA. It might be in the Hero CDMA (Sprint) forum. I can't remember where I found it. You flash it just like you flash a ROM, using the Amon_RA custom recovery. (You can flash it over any ROM, it won't touch anything but the radio firmware)

Okay I found the latest radio at xda and flashed it. So far everything seems okay. I was a little nervous flashing this radio because this latest version says it was for sprint but it flashed okay and things are working.

Yeah, in general you certainly DO NOT want to flash radios from other random phones, as extremely bad things could happen - but for this very specific pair of phones - the HTC Hero CDMA (Sprint) and the HTC Droid Eris (Verizon), the radio hardware and app processor are identical - so this is a rare exception.

Its actually a very good question.

Having an S-OFF (unsecured) bootloader allows you have more options in recovering your phone should something "untoward" happen to it.

You can use the fastboot to re-flash images / partitions back to your phone that you can't otherwise using the secured (S-ON) bootloader.

Basically, you can more easily recover your phone if it becomes semi-bricked.
