Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Desire S which one to buy?

Samsung Galaxy S - 20 k - Better screeen and processor and GPU

HTC Desire S - 21k - Aluminium uni body and more RAM.

Please help to chose one. Need a good phone at 20 k range. Wanted to buy Nexus S but it is discontinued. Please help.

Please let me know performance wise which phone is better ?

which phone is future proof? which will get ice cream update?

which of the 2 phones have problems?

Main purpose is to play games and watch movies.

In most reviews the feeling is that the Galaxy S is the best Android phone available at the moment (but only just). There are also lot of comments about the poor build quality of the Samsung for the price. The HTC may not be perfect but it does seem to have the best build quality at the moment. I had a a small software problem with my HTC Desire HD. I emailed HTC and got an acknowledgement but that's all. After 2 weeks I emailed them again to ask what was happening. That afternoon I got a phone call from the service department apologising for not replying promptly and providing me information on my problem. I would say that was excellent customer service and has made me an HTC fanboy.

From a person who has owned both Samsung and HTC, I will tell you HTC won't win every time, like the case of the Samsung Galaxy S2, but in the Galaxy S vs. the Desire S, there is no confusion here, get the Desire S.

For Games and movies, the Galaxy S is the easy winner, faster GPU for gaming and the video player is compatible with allot more video formats, also the 4" Super SAMOLED screen is great for gaming and watching video on.

I don't know if they will get ICS, probably would be my guess.

CPU - Desire S is superior, but only about 5-10% (Scorpion is faster than Cortex A8)
GPU - Galaxy S has superior GPU, but not by a whole lot. The Adreno 205 in the Desire S really narrowed the gap.
RAM - 768MB (Desire S) vs 384MB (system) + 128MB (GPU) (Galaxy S)

With that said, the phones are damn close. The differences are minor, and by the time that the system RAM of the Galaxy S becomes an actual limitation, you'll be on your next upgrade and won't care. So, what it should really boil down to for you is screens size, screen quality, an form factor. Everything else is so close to being equal that it really doesn't matter.

As of now, no one can say if either phone will receive ICS update. Its an unknown factor, especially as both phones arent exactly newly released.

For playing games I'll go with Galaxy S. Better GPU will go a long way before more RAM does in that department IMO, as long as the RAM is adequate in size.

Galaxy S came out in the summer of 2010, while the Desire S came out in the first quarter of 2011. I doubt either gets ICS, but if they do, the Desire S is more likely.

If the Desire S gets ICS then the Galaxy S probably will as well, also the the Galaxy S is hugely popular and is still selling well so support isnt going to just drop.

There are many factors to consider, including the ones you and I have mentioned, and others that haven't been mentioned. Since there are no guarantees, and the OP wants a phone that WILL get ICS, he has two logical choices.

If you ABSOLUTELY require ICS update, get a SGS2, Evo 3D or Bionic. Thats all I can say. If you cant afford those, basically most any phone you buy cannot be certain to receive ICS update. You'll have to wait till next year to see which phones will get ICS. So its your choice, buy the latest and greatest today to be sure of ICS update, or wait til next year.

Galaxy S has plenty of community support, losts of apps and custom roms or the phone, I've never used Cynogen Mod, never really looked into it as it doesnt interest me, custom roms in general don't interest me.

Buying a Galaxy S now is a bad decision?

Buying it now is certainly not a bad decision. It's an awesome phone. Just be prepared for the possibility that it won't get ICS (it's not a guarantee either way). As far as Cyanogen support, the international Galaxy S is not supported, but some localized versions (IE, Captivate) are.

I agree with you on many custom ROMs, but if he wants ICS support, and there isn't an official relase, Cyanogen is a fairly close to vanilla option.
