Thinking of getting Nexus S. Is it worth it?

I'm looking at getting a Nexus S but I wanted to know a few things first.

Will it still get updates for at least another year?
Will it get ICS?
Will it still be considered a high end device in a year?
How reliable is it?

I considered waiting for the Nexus Prime but currently, the Nexus S is available for $0 upfront on a $29 plan, 24 month contract. Which I doubt the Prime will be on when it comes out.

You'll get mixed answers :)

I just got my white Nexus S a week ago for $0 on a 3 year contract. It has loads of fast memory, a fast processor and a brilliant screen. I just came from owning a Desire and the Nexus S is superior on the hardware front. I looked at the SG2 but they wanted $160 CDN for a 3 year. If the $160 was justified I might have gone for it. The SG2 was the only other device that grabbed me. HTC failed on update promises for the Desire and left me a little jaded towards them, even though rooted I put anything I wanted on. So that left the Sensation ($100 CDN for a 3 year) out of the running. Motorola, never been a fan. I even thought about a Blackberry, the new Curve with OS7 is a really nice unit. Though, knowing me I'd get bored not being able to tweak it as much as an Android.

All this is just my opinion though but opinions can potentially help. Good luck with whatever phone you get. :)

I should think so.

Will it get ICS?
From what I have read it will, I hope it does.

Will it still be considered a high end device in a year?
As with any tech device, it will be dated in the marketing and numbers aspect but not in functionality.

How reliable is it?
I'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for that :) I did consider a HTC Desire but I'm not so sure about them (update wise). And I've read that since the Nexus S is a Google phone, it will continue getting updates, but I'm of course a little skeptical since there's talk of Dual Cores coming soon for ICS.

I've been using a GT540 for about a year and thought about updating to 2.1 but there was a lot ot talk about bricks. Does anyone know about updating the Nexus S? Is it difficult and dangerous like trying to update an LG?

With all the dual-core phones out now, I don't think I'd consider it a high end device anymore. But it's an excellent phone nonetheless with decent performance and useability. I don't see myself upgrading till at least next year as I do most of my mobile web browsing on a tethered tablet.

I've not had any problems with mine at all. I bought it the first day it was available in my area here in Canada, back in April, so at least 5 months of solid reliability.

You can be sure the next Nexus model will not have such a great price when it first gets released. Having said that, it's not far away now as Rogers here in Canada has just discontinued the Nexus S (according to MobileSyrup) and will deplete their current stock. I can only presume that means the new Nexus will be along within a month or so, and may be worth waiting for. Hmm...decisions, decisions...
