re-flash suggestion over litening rom 6.1

hi guys . need some advice plz

with regards to my last thread

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-all-things-root/406610-litening-rom-v6-1-killing-my-battery.html

i have been having a headache trying to put my phone back to how it was, so i have decided to try a different rom and keep my phone rooted and that way i can still freeze the apps i dont use

i am after putting on a different rom instead of the litening 6.1 xxkh3 i currently have rooted on my phone

i am not really bothered about designer roms and doing all sorts of changes to my phone. all i want is something that is good on battery life and freeze the apps i dont use and will not hinder the performance.

so can anyone advice/recommend a good rom and kernel combo

and can i just root straight over litening 6.1 xxkh3?

i see i have to do a Full Wipe = Data, Cache & Dalvik Cache. before i install a new rom so can someone explain how to do this please in the most simplest way.

many thanks

Villain rom is the best I've found for battery. So I would go for this as it also keeps the phone looking the same as stock unless you choose to tweak.

To do a full wipe turn the phone off. Then hold volume up, power and menu buttons until the phone boots. This will put you into recovery mode. On the first screen you will see wipe data and clear cache. Use volume buttons to navigate, home button to select and power button to go back. You will also need to wipe dalvik cache which you can find in the advanced folder.

how about a guide/bit of plain english on how the villain tweaks etc works. this is the bit i find confusing??

I Think Villain tweaks is a bit poor TBH. There should be a restore feature. I have tried restoring the original app from the backup it creates but more often than not it has caused me problems so I just reflashed the rom again to restore all the original files. Bit of a pain if you only want to restore one tweak.

right guys thanks for advice greatly appreciate it

but still A FEW of my questions havent been answered the way i can understand them.

nobody said i YES i can re-root over the top of litening so i guess i can?
so Il be going from kh3 to kg5 or kg6 is that correct?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

so which version of villainrom do i use and which kernel is best to go with it or are they both built in together???

any links pls

---------------------------------------------------------

and when i do this full wipe as SHOTGUN84 has kindly adviced me how to do it.

I TAKE IT I DO THE WIPES FIRST BEFORE ROOTING AND THEN EITHER

Turn on / restart the phone again as normal and then turn it straight off and then power up into download mode?

or do i do the full wipe and immediately power straight up into download mode ready to install villainrom ?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

and once ive done the wipes do i install them via odin exactly the same way i installed the litening rom??

[ROM] Lite'ning Rom v6.1 XXKH3 - Fast as Lightning - xda-developers

with the villain rom first and then the kernel second

----------------------------------------------------------------------

and with regards to STESLATT

Start from step 3 if you are already rooted. Skip step 6 if you have KH3 Modem

Im unsure whether i have kh3 modem

----------------------------------------------

sorry for the questions again guys its just im really new to this and still trying to get my head round it and some of the answers are a bit confusing so i need the totally thick as a plank of wood guide to doing this :D

many thanks

Yes you can flash over the top of litening.
You will not need to re root when going to villain (its already rooted).
The link for villain is in my guide. It includes the Kernel with the rom. (I recommend you update the kernel to the latest version after the install. It can be found here)
As for wiping just follow my guide it has the instructions for what order you do everything.
To check what modem you have go to settings>about phone>baseband version.

hi steslatt

Yes you can flash over the top of litening. - EXCELLENT

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
You will not need to re root when going to villain (its already rooted). -

I thought i was rooted to litening or am i getting confused here?

and when i rooted with litening i didnt get the cwm app it says i should get when i root in youre guide but i did get superuser and to battery apps

in your guide

Step 1 Rooting.
Download the flashing software called odin from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=611625&d=1306787405

SO I take it i dont need to download this as i already have odin downloaded from before???

Download the Rooted Kernal from here (KG6):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=673338&d=1312203859

and do i download this file as thought kg5 was the most upto date?

with regards to youre last post and youre guide im getting seriously confused

i am trying to follow youre instructions starting at step 3.

i have done my titanium back up - i have just installed cwm rom manager free version from android market. when i open it up it doesnt give me no option to create new backup? do i need to buy the premium version.?

do i still need to do a full wipe as shotgun84 adviced me to do in post 2?

Step 4 flashing Villain rom.
You are now ready to flash villain rom. I have shown 2 methods to do this. Method 1 is the no wipe option if you really don't want the hassle of wiping and restoring. Method 2 is the wipe option and this is the one I recommend. If you have problems with method 1 then try method 2. Download Villain rom from here:

http://www.villainrom.co.uk/SGS2/VR2.4.php

( this download says it is kg6. shouldnt i be downloading kg5 instead as i thought this was newer?)

-----------------------------------------

and should i do method 1 ( no wipe)

or method 2

Have you got the Villain 2.4.2 zip on your phone? If not download it directly with your gs2.
Right, now this its what you need to do.

1. Boot into recover mode.
2. Navigate down to backup and restore, select this then select backup and the backup should start.
3. When backup is complete you will still be in recover mode.
4. Do the full wipe how I mentioned earlier.
5.Still in recovery mode, go to "instal zip from sdcard"
6. Select "choose zip from sdcard"
7. Find the villain 2.4.2 file (if downloaded directly to phone it will be in download)
8. Click this file to flash the rom
9. Wait till your phone boots and you will be on villain.
10. Reinstall apps and data with titanium backup.

right guys my apologies for being a idiot

steslatt

only thing im confused with now is ive been reading some of the other posts of steslatts guide

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...shing-firmware-baseband-help.html#post3042268

and it says that kg5 is newer than kg6 and that there can be problems with copying from kg6 to kg5 and there seems to be a bit of a debate over it, thats why ive been getting confused about it. and ive seen some other threads saying how good kg5 is.

so just need to confirm which kernel im putting on my phone please??

-----------------------------------------------------------------

i have now flashed put villainrom on my phone thanks and got up to step 6 of steslatts guide.

after download ive recharged phone back upto 100% and recalibrated the battery

but the phone hasnt changed with regards to battery drainage and is still eating it quite quick so im assuming that should change when i upgrade to kg6 or 5.

NEW PHONE DETAILS

in settings - about phone

android version - 2.3.4

baseband - i9100xxkh3

kernel version - 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine - 2.0.4+ninpo@titan#13

build number - villainrom 2.4.2

Ok the latest version of VillainROM is KG6. If you wish to go to a KG5 ROM you would have to choose another rom, not Villain and in that case you would have to do a full wipe again when you changed.
You have ninphetamine Kernel, if you want to update this to the newer KG5 source one you need to download this zip file. Place it on your phones memory.
Reboot into CWM recovery.
Go to install zip from sdcard.
Choose the Kernel zip file.
Install then reboot phone.

hi everyone jeff the newbie here

ive just joined the forum and i have been following this post carefully as i am interested in flashing my phone to villainrom too

and along with davepenn, im getting confused by this aswell with regards to putting a kernel with the villainrom

in the last 3 posts davepenn has asked which kernel he should be using with villainrom

steslatt says that kg5 does not work with villainrom but you have gave davepenn the links to download kg5

Ok the latest version of VillainROM is KG6. If you wish to go to a KG5 ROM you would have to choose another rom, not Villain and in that case you would have to do a full wipe again when you changed.

Reboot into CWM recovery.
Go to install zip from sdcard.
Choose the Kernel zip file.
Install then reboot phone.

and so does shotgun that link is for kg5 but ithought kg5 doesnt work with villainrom

No need to update again. Try flashing the latest ninphetamine kernel from here.[Kernel][GPL][XXKG5] NEW SOURCES Ninphetamine-2.1.3 - Now with 100% less Samsungyness - xda-developers

SO IM CONFUSED NOW ASWELL

SO LETS SAY FOR INSTANCE THAT I AM AT EXACTLY THE SAME POINT AS DAVEPENN (STEP 6 OF STESLATSS GUIDE) I HAVE VILLAINROM INSTALLED AND NOW I NEED TO ADD THE KERNEL

SO IN THE MOST SIMPLEST WAY

which one should be used with villainrom kg6 or kg5? and whats the links plz ?

and how should it be downloaded either cwm or odin?

and do you need to do the wipes again before installing it?

and on steslatts guide on step 6 he mentions putting on a modem

Step 6 Flashing Modem (Optional)
This is optional but recommended. Download the KG6 Modem from here:
2shared - download MODEM_I9100XXKG6.rar
Extract the modem. Launch Odin, click PHONE and select the modem file you just extracted. Turn your phone off, put it into download mode and connect it to your pc. Wait for the phone to connect. Once connected click start. Odin will begin to flash the modem. Once it has finished the phone will reboot and you can disconnect. All done.

is the modem the same as the kernel or totally something different

i am new to this aswell so please if you could answer in the simplest way that would be cool

cheers boys

and then i have just done step 6 of the flashing modem.................

the new settings are

baseband version - i9100xxkg6

kernel version - 2.6.35.11-ninphetamine-2.1.3+ninpo@titan#26

villainrom 2.4.2

-------------------

before i did these to downloads i did not do any wipes! is that correct or should i have done them?

is that everything done properly now or have i missed anything out????

do i have to charge to 100% and then recalibrate again??

You just flashed an older modem... :/

So should i put kh3 back on it and if so whats the link and do i do it exactly the same way i put kg6 on

also the phones battery life has not changed one bit and is still draining quite quickly.

And also now when i go on to google or internet everything is slow and jumpy . when i have typed something in or i am on a page and i want to scroll up or down. before when you move youre finger up and down the page was gliding smoothly and quick and now it is very slow and jumpy and thats the same with when i want to zoom in when you put both fingers on the screen And tilt it backwards and forwards. but the scroll works perfectly when i go on to my android market app and ebay app and youtube app. but the zoom in and out is not

i cant believe it

when you change rom it's advised to calibrate battery. have you done this?

the browser "lag" you are getting is a known problem with ninphet. the warnings on the developers page are very clear this will happen.
download an alternative browser from the market. (personally I love dolphin, but all of the alternatives seem to get positive reviews by their users)
