Root **CAUTION**Read before rooting**

Well now that the device is upon us. i want everyone to BE AWARE OF THIS.

Just because there is a root method for the Bionic we need to wait until there is a safe recovery method should you brick the device. So please i would not advise rooting this device until that part is worked out.

ALSO i would like to note that today P3droid tweeted that there maybe a patch pushed to the Bionics to stop the exploit used to root it. So we need to be double cautious.

Its safe to root. but without a recovery sbf its not safe to flash custom roms and tweaks. I am sure there will be new exploits and a leaked sbf in the future. same things were said about the DX and everything turned out fine.

Rooting just gives you the SU app and with that the ability to access the root of the device.

Please explain in detail so I understand. I've rooted dozens of devices. It consists of copying one 26K file to the /system/bin folder. What am I missing? Delete the file and you are unrooted.

what if for some reason you boot loop. What will you do then? Without a safe recovery method? Also until there is a Bootstrap or CWR for the Bionic you can't make backups either. I'm not telling you what to do. I'm just merely saying imo it would be a good idea for people to wait for a safe recovery method. ESPECIALLY NEWBIES

it will cut down on the dozens of posts on the forum all saying the same thing about "hey i rooted and removed bloat and now this isn't working and i tried this to fix it and now i'm boot looped" what do i do?.....

Stock recovery factory reset would fix most issues if they arose. I just rooted my friends bionic without issue and froze a lot of bloat.

key word being "froze"....a lot of newbies don't know about freezing with TiBu and they delete or uninstall first.

One click roots your phone, but in this case you must have the tool box and adb files on your pc

The first rule of rooting is backup, backup, backup. As we can't do that yet, you're taking your (Bionic's) life in your hands.

To make a backup you must be rooted to start, but sbf files would be a safe way out.

Can you explain what you mean by 'froze'

Freezing an app tells the Android O/S to de-activate (disable) it so that it cannot be started. Reversing this process, thawing, re-activates (enable) the app so that it can once again be started.

Note: this freezing / thawing is done by the PackageManage API.

Other methods of disabling applications by renaming (caution!) or deleting (eek ) are not as preferable as the freeze/thaw method since they are basically more invasive.

In any case, you need to carefully keep track of what things you have messed with and be especially careful with apps that you have not personally loaded on your device (i.e., system apps).

Here's my take.

I believe (and I'm rather sure that many here would agree with me in my assessment) that I am a relatively advanced Android user. Rooting a phone most definitely is easy enough - no problems, no worries.

But it is not 100% absolutely infallible. There are always things that could go wrong, with mistyped commands using the manual method to connection cable failure using the one-click method. Most of these types of failures should not result in anything catastrophic - but, as noted by more than a few already, without a way to revert this, there does exist the possibility of at the very least boot-looping (and at most true bricking). Again, though the chance is low, the possibility exists.

We need to make a nice set of posts and then tie them into a single post like the Motorola DROID All Things Root forum has - clear cut instructions (with pics would be even better) to make it as nearly infallible as possible - and still someone is gonna goof it up.

The real basic problem, though, as mentioned above, is that people aren't stopping at rooting - we've all had rooted devices for 1.5+ years now, and we're so used to having root and being able to do what we want to that it's annoying, frustrating, and even (at times) semi-debilitating not being able to do with this badass phone what we could do on our previous phone(s).

Therefore, this thread is a warning to not only root carefully, but do everything carefully, using good judgment. Documenting what you did would also help - we already have posts like "I {froze/uninstalled/removed} a bunch of apps...and now my phone {bootloops/FC spams me/won't run ______}."

And the madness is only going to continue.

I would add to that: knowledge and information.

I've even quoted you re. this thread in at least one other thread, but I guess folks get a little over-exuberant.

I've yet to overclock or remove any bloatware from my Droid X...haven't seen or felt the need to (I know for some folks its a matter of principle, which I understand).

Hopefully, an .SBF file will turn-up soon and/or full custom recovery. That would certainly help.

If you don't understand the concepts behind what you are doing and hoping that reading instructions from a script you found on the internet are going to save you be prepared for a brick.

my job is a software tester. Its my job to break software all day or make sure its going to work. I like to keep that trial and error stuff at work. When dealing with my phone i always make sure i have a safe way back first.

Most likely it would if Motorola blocks the exploit. I know that has been the issue with some phones.
