My first android but not too THRILLed 4g!

Hello everyone, as the title says i'm new to this os. My first smartphone was an iphone and every generations after that. I've been wanting to switch over to a new platform but didn't make the jump until now. I originally wanted the galaxy s2 to be my first but it's taking too long and I got my thrill on the release day. While the phone is nice there's a bit of learning with the os. I've been in this forum for a while but just to read reviews about phones and nothing more than that. It seems that the downside to a lot of android phone are battery life and this phone is no exception. I like the phone and I like to use the phone but I have to limit its usage just to make it through the day. I have juice defender but don't really notice anything to help. Is there anything else I could do about the battery life? also what are other things that I can I do in terms of themes or just anything out of the box without rooting?

The lg thrill community looks to be small but I hope those who are here can help me make the most out of this phone cuz i don't want to give it up yet. otherwise I might just return it before 30 days. Thanks!

Well, since the phone just came out, and it is still hard to find at most retailers, I wouldn't jump ship just yet. The community will grow and hopefully some more great devs will jump on too.

As for the battery life, it really varies quite a bit by user and what you use your phone for. Keep in mind, the screen is substantially larger than the Iphone and so is the processor. It takes a lot to power a 4.3 inch screen compared to a 3.7 inch. Also the battery is a modest 1500mAh battery, which really isn't that big. What I am doing, is purchasing a backup battery and charger off ebay to cycle it in when needed. They are dirt cheap. You can always buy a larger battery and cover for the back, but then it gets more bulky.

When Gingerbread comes out, I would expect some pretty good improvements to the OS and likely the battery life. It is said to be within 30 days of launch, but you know AT&T. ;)

Hope this helps answer your question.

I won't be jumping ship just yet because i'm liking this phone. I'm not a benchmark junkie so i can care less if the next phone will blow this out of the water. This phone seems solid and i too am hoping that the community grows and get great devs but with iphone and galaxy s2 around, i'm afraid this phone will not get any attention. Without enough demand, it might not get any update quick enough.

Anyway, where can i find this larger battery and cover you mentioned?

Trust me on this..keep a spare rather than the extended larger battery.

I will post a link to the guy we buy batteries from later tonight

Besides having a task manager I have my brightness set on auto, browser brightness on auto, weather widget refresh at 1 hour and wifi off when I leave the house(doesn't search for wireless networks). Since this OS is true multitasking, apps will still run if u don't close them up. So by opening up a program and then exiting it by the push of the home button it still keeps that app running. Make sure u back completely out so that it'll close.

Here's a link for batteries. I bought the 2 1800 mAh's and a charger for $12. I have yet to try them cause I haven't ran into that situation where I needed to replace a dead battery.

I take off Haptic feedback and audible touch tones and that helps my battery life a bit.

i have done that but i'm not sure if it helped much. I also have advance task killer but i think that made battery worse or maybe i'm just using it wrong. Anyway thanks for the help let me know if there is anything else that could be done.

This link show no items.

I think i've been spoiled by iphone battery as well as the simplicity of closing apps. I will stick it out and just carry around an extra battery.

when you use advance task killer are you checking the apps you want terminated along with advance task killer?

i use the brower a hell of alot and the battery life is better then my captivate.

Hi iidroid,

I'm in basically the same boat as you--I'm new to this OS and my first smartphone was the iPhone (except I only had a 3GS hand-me-down from a family member). Same as you, I'm liking this OS a lot, but I'm not so THRILLed (to quote you) about the battery life we're getting.

I've been doing some looking around and I think I've come to the same conclusions and downloaded the same apps in an attempt to save battery life (Advanced Task Killer and Juice Defender), however for me I'm seeing a vast improvement on my battery life. When I first got it, it would last for only about 6~7 hours (admittedly with some constant wifi connection at home and email checking due to a girlfriend studying abroad). After I did good amount of tweaking and installed those apps, I found that my battery life is lasting much much longer now. I also learned that the battery widget is supposedly a known battery killer, but can anyone else confirm this?

In any case, I've been noticing almost twice the battery life. The only head-scratching problem I've been having is the Android System taking up about 50% of my battery life. Now I know these percentages are all relative and such--which is actually the reason why I'm scratching my head so hard over this. When I first got the phone, I played Nova with 3D on max for about... not even 5 minutes? I literally skipped and completed the tutorial level (I'd played it on iPhone before), and when I checked my battery usage I had Nova as the top contributor at 49%, while I believe the Android System was taking about 20-30%... Now when I play even 3D games for quite a while (I had Let's Golf 2 going for about 17 minutes and a couple other games for 5 minutes each), they only report taking up 4~7% battery while the Android System is still on top with 40%. Can anyone confirm my usage, if this is correct or not?

I apologize for "thread jacking" if that is in fact what I'm doing... Considering the fact that my background with phones is quite similar to the OP, I feel that this is a relevant battery issue so I thought to post it here. If I should move to a new topic, please just say so. (I'm kind of new to all of this forum stuff haha)

Thanks!

EDIT: I also would like to add that as I was posting this, it seems like my phone shut off and then back on, all by itself, resetting the battery timer as well. I was hoping to get an accurate time reading on how long the battery was lasting today, but I guess I'm going to have to use my memory...

The thing here is we shouldn't have to use advanced task killer. Froyo wasn't bad about killing unused apps, but the Thrill seems to be. As I understand from various ROMs I used on the Captivate, that's a kernel thing.

The Thrill also seems to have trouble going into deep sleep. Using CPU Spy (from the market) it's only been in Deep Sleep 37% of the time, yet my phone is idle way more than 37% of the day. That number should be in the range of 50%-60%. The CPU state is also controlled by the kernel.

And finally, using the GPS Status app it shows the Brightness of the screen as measured by Lux. Sitting side-by-side in the same light both on auto brightness my Thrill is at 26 Lux and my Captivate is at 6 Lux. More brightness means more battery power used. Brightness range is also controlled by the kernel (according to Hardcore's kernels on XDA).

So, what I'm saying here is the Thrill's kernel could really use some optimization. Do that and we might really see some battery numbers.

I see!! That makes sense. I admit I don't know much about the technical stuff yet, but I'm guessing my high Android System usage comes from my phone being unable to go into deep sleep? I'll try the app you mentioned to see for sure. Do you think the issue could be solved with the Gingerbread update?

Using advance task manager set at following:

Auto kill level: Aggresive
Auto Kill frequency: Every one hour

Just in case you guys don't know. The apps highlighted in green (in the kill menu) have to be killed manually. To do that just hit you menu button, service and start closing apps. Be advised though some apps will re-appear like maps and for some reason my fantasy football app.

Last charge was yesterday. Used the brower, texted, edited photos and alot of facebooking.

Looks like you barely even touched the phone with the Display so low. With that said, thats pretty bad battery life if you barely get over a day while barely touching the phone.

display on this phone is always near the bottom actually.

in comparison I noticed that on my infuse it is always at the top.

considering we don't have custom kernels or roms at the moment, he is getting pretty good battery life.

out of the box with mild usage users are lucky to get 6 hours

Today's lucky numbers....over 8 hrs and still at 62%.

Display has been on for an hour....accounting for 5% of the drain
