Screen Durability

There have been many wondering about the durability of the screen of the Eris. Does it need a screen protector? Is it easily scratched? Is it anything like the 'Gorilla Glass' that is used on the Droid?

The answers to these questions are yet unknown to most of us. We know the Droid's screen is impressively resistant, and that we like screen protectors.

After weeks of my Eris being naked (took off the screen protector and case), I began to worry, and think to myself, One of these times, I'm gonna scratch my screen. I know it.

I have much less fear now, after watching this.

screen is definitely glass, so that will make it much more resistant to scratches. i am certain it's not gorilla glass. but even if it was, i don't think it's all that much more durable than your average glass based upon a number or reports of scratches and cracks i've seen here and on other forums. i use a screen protector. it's not that hard to scratch glass.

I bravely tested mine too, knowing that mine is insured. MY Honda keys did not scratch my screen, with some serious pressure. Not even hairline.

I still try to not put my phone in the same pocket as my keys. But I don't worry about it that much, really. My Verizon screen protector was very grippy (my finger had to be C L E A N to use the touch screen) and ended at the top of the LCD part (so when I dragged my finger from about the verizon logo at the top of my phone, my finger would feel the edge of the plastic), which I couldn't STAND.

Waiting for the Zagg full body shield to come to Best Buy, so that I can CONSIDER buying it. I love my naked eris so much though, it might be hard to swallow.

the guy that made that vid after admitted he does have hairline scratches on his screen

No, I said I had TWO scratches, from the knife, after pressing down so hard I heard it grinding- AFTER the video.
And you cannot see them even under an LED light unless you smear oil against the grain of the cut, and you can see them in the gaps in of the oil.

Other than that, they are COMPLETELY invisible in sunlight, sun LIGHTS (As in sewing lights and such) And LED lights.

I dont know what the glass is but I can say that after over 3mo use with NO case or screen protector, the screen (and the device except for the earpiece which is now silver) looks as good as new.

I hate screen protectors and I can tell you that my Ipod Touch, LG Dare and every other device in the past developed scratches easier and quicker than the Eris.

I try to keep the Eris alone in a pocket but I often forget and yet...still as good as new.

I cant say for sure you dont need a screen protector, but I can say....it isnt essential.

In-any-case, all screens aren't 100% scratch or crack resistant.

I paid just $99 after the rebate, so I basically got my phone for free. Even with the phone warranty and protection plan, I have not plans on paying for a refurbished phone just because I didn’t want to spend the money or use a screen cover or case.

So, if a screen protector (which can barely be seen, even if you do not put it on right[the Eris screen protectors are nearly automatic when it comes to putting them on. they just lay down by themselves and the bubbles just disappear. Some edges have micro bubbles, but they can be forced out]) with minor annoyances or a case that makes the phone just a few millimeters thicker or a few ounces heaver.. Protects the phone from eyesore scratches... Prevents me from spending a replacement cost..

I think I will keep my protector and case on it ^_~

I scratched my Eris screen on day three. I have no idea how - it wasn't from keys, probably from sand. I now have a screen protector on & am looking for ways to remove the scratch, but no luck so far. So....proceed with caution! The screen can be scratched. I speak from experience...

You could try a vehicle grade scratch remover for glass. If it is that bad, it might help.

scratched mine within a week, just as predicted. babied it too. just be warned. not as scratch resistant as you think. you get a tiny piece, and i mean tiny, of sand or some similar particle and you wipe your screen - big scratch.

It IS as scratch resistant as I think.
It's GLASS. Metal is going to have a hard time scratching it.
However, Sand is made of quartz.
Quartz cuts through glass.

Simple as that.
