Newer B&N Nook Colors with 1.2 software update now have the internal sd card partitioned to allow more room for books. You may prefer to restore the old partition method if you like more onboard space for your own files and don't need 5 GB for data (apps).

Other combinations are available:

• old, 1 GB data (ie apps), 5 GB media (other storage)
• new, 5 GB data, 1 GB media
• custom, 1.96 GB data, 4 GB media

Repartitioning is no longer needed to install newer roms.

How to tell before you purchase? Affected NC's have a blue sticker on the box.

How to check if you have the B&N 1.2 software version? You'll see "Read Forever" when you turn it on. The 1.2 software version by itself does not indicate a problem, but most new NC's will have this problem.

Sorry, I have not needed or tried this procedure so won't be much help with it.

I used this to partition to 1.96 data/ 4 media, although I'll admit that I don't fully understand what it all means. It seemed to work fine for me, and I was able to load Phiremod no problem.

I am not sure i quite understand the need to repartition.............I want more space for data...games, proggies, books from the nook app, etc so why would i need to mess with it unless CM7 won't install properly. Anyone tried this on a new nook partition with the new version of cwr?

Yes; I just purchased a brand new blue-dot Color to replace my broken original Color. I used the zip to repartition 1GB sys/5GB data and then the zip to format using CWR 3.2.0.1, and it all went down without a hitch.

Are you using CM7 already? If so, go into storage and check the size of the eMMC. If it says 5 gigs then you're all set. If it says 1 gig, then you'll want to repartition eventually. Some ROMs require it.

no, i am expecting the nook today via usps so i don't even have it yet.......so you went with the 'old' partition eh? I just plan to install CM7. From reading the other thread, it looks like the 'old' or 'custom' one will both work. You didn't do the second .zip he said to do though? This one:
'reformatData-v1.zip', you just like the new version of cwr do it when installing CM7?

You're right, either one will work if you don't plan on dual booting. However, if you want to dual boot from eMMC (which is really great, at least for me), you need to partition the old way (1GB data/5GB media). I had originally repartitioned using the custom setting and then I tried to dual boot, so I know this one from experience.

no, no dual booting, this will just be a family tablet so games, surfing, facebook/twitter, etc.....the occasional nook book.

my wife just told me the power is out at home from the storms so i can't do squat with the tablet even if it comes today until it is back.

Well, got my nook and there is no blue dot so i think i have an old one, i don't want to even connect it to wifi for fear it may try to update so going to try installing cm7 from my cwr card as soon as I let the unit charge up....we shall see

No blue dot, eh? I assumed they were flying off the shelves and no old stock.

Did you boot it up yet? No "Read Forever" at boot? There's no way it'll phone home unless you actually add wi-fi login information, (unless you take it into B&N store).

Well, after installing CM7 i was in cm7 logo bootloop....so i installed the 'custom' partition....all seems well now so i'll try installing a few apps from the market and see how it goes for a few days.

I bought mine used and there was no blue dot on the box, but it does however say read forever when you turn it on, it came to me with cm7 installed so I flashed the stock 1.2 rom on it and now I am trying to make an sd card that will boot up and run cm7 whenever installed.

If you have an older NC and installed the update, it would say "Read Forever".

Gadget 'the occasional Nook book' COULD be a reason to dual boot.
If you really want to use the Nook software to read books, the app on the stock ROM is far better than the app in the market. So if you want to use the stock app then dual booting to the stock ROM would be a better experience.
That said, I much prefer Aldiko for reading ebooks.

I just bought a pre-owned NC, it's 1.3 now. Can I use this guide to repartition it? Also for the sticky tread ' Nook Color rooting and rom guide... READ ME FIRST!' , is this introduction can be used for 1.3 NC or something changed?

Do you have a 1.2 updated to 1.3 or an older NC w/o the new partitioning scheme?

I believe the "howto" tells how to check if you've already been repartitioned?

The NC comes to me with 1.3 already, and the available space is 1GB. These imformation comes from 'setting'. BTW, this NC is shipped to a friend in USA and bring it to me in Asia, so I am not sure if it auto updated or comes with 1.3 from B&N since it tested for a few days.
From the links, I assume the first is to root it use the manulnooter, repartition it later? I need sometimes to read more...

Sorry, my Nook was older (1.1) so I didn't repartition and I no longer have it so I'm not much help.

My impression is to MN first, back it up, repartition, restore backup.

Thanks for your advise, I made a repartition after MN root and the NC need re-register after that I restored the backup. All things work right.

The actual procedure works much easier than read the [How-to], since there are so many options to be understand first.

By the way, I looked the battery usage. The 'Cell standby' is 45%, for NC, this is no phone. how to close this use by phone?

Hi i have just few questions to inquire, my NC is currently working on cm7.1 and i've rooted it using your instructions and it is working great. But like everybody else, when i download apps from android market, the apps will be stored in the internal storage of 0.96gb instead of the 5gb, the 5gb doesn't seems to be utilized.

So this thread is the one that teaches how to flash the NC such that the 5gb will be utilized to store the apps i downloaded (be it android market or any other markets available)? and that the 0.96gb will become the one that is not utilized correct?

Another question is, will the cm7.1 rom, which my NC is currently rooted with, be modified or corrupted by this flashing process? I was hoping the cm7 system will be there when i flashed the partitioning zip and the only thing that changed will be that there will be 5gb space to download apps and store my media, is that a positive?

does the second file 'reformatData-v1.zip' clear out the cm7.1? from what i infer, reformatData only clears out the media and apps downloaded, but doesn't affect cm7.1 right? only by 'format system' will the cm7.1 rom be affected, is that correct?

Last question, if i carry out this partitioning flashing, will the google apps (gapps) which i flashed in,together with cm7.1 (according to your guide in another thread), be deleted or affected in anyways?

I'll appreciate it if someone is able answer all my questions because i would love to make use of that 5gb asap instead of leaving it and not fully utilize the space in my NC! Thank you very much!

From the first link (DeanGibson):

• You must backup everything you wish to save, or archive it on the B&N site, because this will clear all your data on the device: /data partition (0p6), /cache partition (0p7), and /media partition (0p8).
• The /boot partition (0p1), /rom (configuration) partition (0p2), (hidden) recovery partition (0p3), and /system (whichever operating system you have) partition (0p5) will not be touched.

Yes, this will resize your data partition to one that is better for people who don't read books.


Just your data is affected. If you backup your rom in recovery, that goes to the sdcard partition so that should be unaffected.


My understanding from the above, is only apps/data/book/media/movies will be affected. It'll be like a factory reset (no apps, no settings).

oh i just want to check, to backup the data, i heard of using titanium backup. does this app backup your files by keeping a copy of the data in your sdcard? or does is backup the files in some other ways?

and if yes, can i transfer these data from sdcard to my com via the sdcard reader?

if that is possible, instead of using titanium backup, will it be possible to move apps from the NC memory to the sdcard and then transfer to computer??

I've heard of this thing called the dropbox, does this app play a part in the backup process, like saving the data in the dropbox?

Correct.

Dropbox is for a transferring a couple files, not all your apps. It's pretty slow and not designed for this. I use it when I want to copy a file that I might want on my phone or any of our 3 tablets.

Titanium would work, but it only backs up to your sdcard. You'd have to copy the TitaniumBackup folder on your sdcard to your computer to back it up, either by plugging it into usb or removing the card.
