First off pour another drink. Its really not that bad. Ahaha To root your phone download gingerbreak. Install it. Open it and click root phone. There's a link I posted for gingerbreak a few posts down. I'm on my phone so you have to go find it. :D then after you do that you are rooted. And then just follow all the steps in the thread that tells you how to flash Cm7. Which is a rom and will give your phone gingerbread which is a version of android. Its version 2.3 which our phones were never meant to run but we are all laughing at all the ones that doubted it was possible

IcarusMod = Rooted, Stripped & Cleaned up Android 2.1 (codenamed Eclair)
CM6 = CyanogenMod 6 = Custom Rooted Android ROM 2.2 (codenamed Froyo)
CM7 = CyanogenMod 7 = Custom Rooted Android ROM 2.3 (codenamed Gingerbread)
CWM = ClockWork Mod = Adds lots of handy options to recovery mode, which is a pre-boot tool.
Z4Root = App used to root 2.1
GingerBreak = App used to root 2.2 and up

Screw ROM Manager. Do it this way.

Download this and put it on the root of your sd card. (Root meaning not in a folder)
3.0.2.8 recovery.img

Then download this from the Market. (Its free)
https://market.android.com/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&feature=search_result

Then open the terminal emulator you just downloaded off the Market and type this in:

su (hit enter)
flash_image recovery /sdcard/ x.x.x.x recovery.img (Hit enter) (**x.x.x.x, type in the recovery img's name dont type it in as x.x.x.x)
exit (enter)
Now you have clockworkmod recovery on your phone.

Now go to the PlayfulGod link I gave you and download those 3 links I told you too. And put them on the root of your SD card.

Reboot into recovery by turning the phone off and while holding the send key and the volume up key and tap the power. You will then go into recovery mode.

Once in recovery mode, scroll down to "Advanced" then to "back up and restore" then choose "backup"

Once thats done hit your back key so you are back on the main screen. Go to "wipe data/factory reset." confirm it.
"Wipe cache partition". Confirm it.
Go back to advanced and select "wipe dalvik cache" Confirm it
Hit your back key and go to mounts and storage and format everything EXCEPT your sd card. Sd ext is okay to format but do not go format sd card. It will erase everything off your sd card if you do.
Then go back to the main, and go to "Install zip from sd" then to "Choose zip from sd" and select the ROM you choose and confirm it. It will them flash your phone.
Once thats done go back to "Choose zip from sd card" and flash the Gapps file.
Once thats done hit your back key so you are back on the main, and go to "advance again and select "fix permissions"
Then hit your back key and go to the top and select "Reboot device"
Your phone will reboot and you will have Gingerbread on your Ascend. When your phone reboots you will have to put your Gmail account info in and then your done.

You will have no metroPOS apps and you will have to redownload any apps you had before. When your phone reboots its basically going to be a brandnew phone without jack on it.

how about this?

so this first?

then one of these? i assume the first one?

In between those you need to download ROM Manager and flash the recovery and back up your current rom in case something goes wrong. Just as a safety net. And you can choose either one you want. Playful God's CM7.2 0728 build is the most recent. His CM7.2 is in rom manager so you *can* I say *can* because sometimes RM sucks, flash it via rom manager.

The single biggest thing these days that causes the most problems for me while flashing is using ROM Manager. I just use CWM. Since I uninstalled it things go much smoother.

alright well i just rooted my phone (gingerbreak) what next?

Depends on what you want to do. You can install a custom ROM if you like, or you could just keep the ROM you have now and cruise the market for apps that will help your phone run better. You could install a2sd, which will use an extension on your sdcard as internal memory, allowing you far more apps and less chance of lag. You could also grab a cache cleaner to set up to wipe your caches on a daily basis or so, which frees up more memory, though in my opinion there are some apps that work better if you don't wipe their cache. You could grab Auto Memory Manager, which can optimize how your memory is used. There are LOTS of things you can do. Your best bet is to cruise the forums a bit, see what people are talking about and using.
