So it is driving me a bit crazy that all the other phones are getting the gingerbread update and we are still stuck in the mud...

My impatience is making me want to root and maybe even use a custom rom, I have never done either.

Anyone out there hear anything new? My Epic is just draining in battery life and when i unlock the screen my apps disappear for a few seconds and some of the touch response time is off..

Also does anyone have any custom roms they can recommend and perhaps some instructions? I'm just getting tired of waiting. I'm running froyo.

Thanks in advance!

There are many references and links to rooting and ROMS in this thread as alternatives. Syndicate and Bonsai are the two most popular. You can also try the latest gingerbread leak from Samfirmware too which is actually been my daily driver for about two weeks now.

This is the forum you want to roam around in. And the most current gingerbread leak is EH17 which can be given a test drive over on that forum whether you odin it (no root required, but it gives you root) or via flashing which requires root and the latest CWM.

I tried to root. All my PCs ( 3 ) one of which is WIn 7 delete the bin file needed as the PC world sees it as a virus. I turn off Virus protection, I have disabled it, I have tried different downloads. I was a die hard Palm person. Used webOs doctor and had lots of homebrew on my pre, and all of it with out issues. I can not root my phone with one click root because I can not beat virus protection on 3 different Dell PC's. It should not be this hard. How do they make it so simple in the videos ?

Why can't someone build a down loader App for"rooting" or a Homebrew like Preware ? Life woudl be grand...

I attempted to flash to EH17 but ran into a snafoo as my device randomly shutoff, I tried turning it back on and it was Soft bricked, i unbricked it by flashing it it EH17 but when it restarted and i went to the phone info it was still on Froyo and still is on Froyo EC05, The only change i saw was Baseband Version which had changed to S:D700.0.55.EH17 Nothing else changed, and my phone got a little laggier, any help? I was using a PC but my comp randomly died, can anyone guide me to a Mac OS version of odin and perhaps a very stable very good Custom rom that can run on epic, the newest perhaps even maybe one based off of Honeycomb? The help would be great!! If the things don't work out i still need a mac version of odin and the files to safely flash back to Stock Froyo.

I really need this help! Thanks guys!

P.s. EI05? Newest Build leak?

so that's your first post? Just go buy an iphone.... If they give a date and miss it, you all bitch. If they don't give a date and just say it's coming, you all bitch. If the wind blows the wrong way, you bitch. If they push it before it's really ready and there are bugs, you bitch. If it takes forever and is actually pretty good, you'll bitch about it not being out sooner.
So is there any new news of the official release date, or is sammy still keeping us in the dark about their failure to update a so called flagship phone...

I'm not gonna get into the god stuff any further... but the United States constitution does not apply to privately owned message boards on the Internet.

Anyways, lets end this off topic stuff.

wait wait wait.... i think i see what you are trying to say... but..

dont you think .. about 30% of the stuff on here.. is a form of bitchin/complainin?

For sure, I'm just mostly being a smart ass, and kidding around with you... complaining doesn't really bother me that much. And complaining can be a good way to get real problems solved too.

Since the new Samsung Epic Torch and the other Galaxy S II phones are all the talk. Even though Samsung did start the process and put in the hours for Gingerbread for our phones. Since the pressure is no longer there from communities such as ours and the phone is now really of no importance to Samsung since it will be discontinues soon. Do you think Samsung and Sprint are just going to say "forget it, its not worth finishing up the Gingerbread for the original Epic" and just not release an official version to us?

Sprint keeps telling me that it is up to Samsung/Google to decide which phones will get updates. I have been talking to Sprint over and over because I have had so many issues with my Epic 4G. Gone through 3 phones, very little help from tech so I just did a bunch of research online and with the help of people like those here have helped me make my phone much more stable. The one thing that really irritates me though is that for some reason Samsung felt that 512mg of internal memory would be fine when it should be at least 1GB since a smartphone uses alot of resources and we all like having a bunch of great apps on our phones for fun, leisure and business.

I still have a couple issues that I cannot seem to resolve without having to shut off the phone, pull the battery and removing the SD card. I have many times, 2-4 times a day sometimes where apps on my SD card disappear. The other thing is sometimes my phone will just shut down on its own which really blows because if I don't happen to go to use the phone on my own I won't receive calls or texts that could be very important.

There are many times where I would go to the Android Market and it refuses to download. The little green bars just flow across the screen. If I shut the phone down, remove the battery, wait a minute or two and turn it back on more often than not the market will work again.

Don't get me wrong, I really do like the idea, the concepts of the Epic 4G even though Sprint is very slow to bring 4G to most of the States which is really irritating. Maybe if they merge with Verizon 4G may become a reality sooner since Verizon seems to have the highest rating in cell service and towers. The one regret that I had is that I did not do just a little more research and get the Motorola Photon 4G. I have always had great luck with Motorola phones with Sprint and I have been a long time customer with them because they have always worked for me and have treated me like a person not to mention some freebies, discounts because I was able to get a corporate account when I worked at Warner Bros.

Currently I am on temporary disability, otherwise I would just go ahead and sell the Epic 4G and buy the Motorola Photon 4G. Dual core processor, 1GB internal memory and built in 16GB SD storage.

Sorry to go off topic but I really believe that Samsung/Google and possibly Sprint have no intentions of upgrading our Epics to Gingerbread. I refuse to root my phone just to get Gingerbread so I guess I have to suffer just as I did when I upgraded my previous phone, the Samsung Instinct another phone that was abandoned. They make in my opinion the best TV's but they should leave the phones to those who really know how to make a rock solid phone. This will be my last Samsung phone.

One more thing. Can someone give me a list of must have tools and other great apps that are stable and work very well without blowing out what little memory we have internally if we have lots of apps. Thanks in advance and I hope most people are happy with their Epics. Maybe I just got 3 lemons.

Jim
