Question about using wifi

I've seen in some posts where ppl say that if they do not live in a strong 4g area that they turn off the lte radio and use their wifi when at home to save some battery life....well i was reading these posts and was a little confused, if u turn off your CDMA/lte radio and are strictly using wifi, doesn't that prevent u from receiving txts, calls etc???

No. You are thinking of airplane mode. LTE radio is simply the mobile data radio. Turning that off does not allow data to be transferred over the network, only SMS or calls.

Yes. Most apps allow you do use Wifi instead of Data. Only a few require data-only and not wifi.

Ok...I just rooted my Droid X, installed wireless tether, and my connection on my phone dropped...I couldn't get on internet or the market! Finally, I turned wifi on on the phone, and now I can access both...what's up?!

You cant connect to wifi and transmit a wifi signal via wifi tether at the same time. Its a hardware limitation.

to OP...

the cell network data radio requires more power to keep the connection between the tower and your phone.. because of distance. and the speed at which data is tranfering.. it is slower than wifi... so connection to get data is kept open longer.

if you are in a wifi area...
the wifi radio does not require much power because it is only needed to very short distance.. and the data speeds are much faster.

when your phone sees that a wifi connect is available for use.. it automatically turns off you cell data network radio. it knows that wifi is always better.

on my evo.. i have an app called "automateit".. it knows when I am in a location of work or home.. and turns on the wifi radio. this helps to conserve my battery
