Root Bionic Gets Custom Recovery!!!

@P3Droid All D3/Bionic owners owe this recovery to @Hashcode for his 2nd init recovery method, I'm sure he will have directions soon.

I'm coming from the world of OG Droid where we had an unlocked bootloader that took care of everything and I never followed any of the news on hacks for newer phones until I got my Bionic. So someone please fill me in: what is a boostrap app, what is CWR 4.0.1.5, and what exactly will both of these let me do?

I bootstrap pretty much bypasses the locked bootloader, so we can flash custom ROMs. CWR is a tool that lets you backup and restore nandroid backups, as well as flash ROMs.

That's good and all, but with the bootloader locked, we have to use Motorola's kernel, which limits us from overclocking and other things like speed optimization.

Wireless tether needs iptables, which is part of the kernel. But, you can use a database modification to use Verizon's own app. Not that I condone this or anything.

Yes, it does stand for Clockwork Recovery. And, no, you're not a goofball. Different people use different methods to refer to it - CWM Recovery and CMR are also used, so it gets confusing.

CM Recovery or CMR should probably be the best ways (as clockwork is one word), although CWMR and CWM Recovery are also acceptable.

I gain so much knowledge and learn so much about my phones here, and I have tremendous respect and admiration for the dev community, but may I suggest and request that we not use the word ****** unless we are talking about the opposite of accelerate? It is just a verb that means slow but that is not the context in which most people use it. This isn't about being PC, it is about being respectful.

Yes, it is already a restricted word, hence the need for the hyphen, and since he was referring to himself, I didn't make an issue of it, other than to point out he wasn't.

But you're right - the word is restricted for a reason, and should be treated as such.

I had a discussion with the mods here, and phases put it plainly - it's a restricted word for a reason, and thus workarounds should not be used either.

I've removed the references to the word in all posts, including quotations, and in addition, I offer up my own apologies for propagating it further by using the work around myself.

Thanks, again, almahix, for bringing it to my attention. Phases has also taken care of another word from our lexicon, and in the future I'll be alert to ppl using workarounds (and also not use them myself).
