Done with Android. Switching to Iphone 5

My first android phone was a Droid X. Great phone, or at least the hardware was great. Software-wise there was a lot to be desired.

My second android phone was the EVO 3D. Great phone, awesome phone but it suffers from some occasional quirks that I can only attribute to the Android OS. Occasional freezes are the most annoying.
I am just tired of it. I want all the features to work and work reliably. I am tired of something not working. Usually the camera, when you need it in a hurry.

I am done with Android. I am switching over to the Iphone 5 as soon as Sprint releases it.

I know it's not the iPhone, but I have the newest iPod touch...And despite it's lack of customization (which is there to "protect" the user) it locks up and I have to reset it. The BT and wifi also goof up, and I have to reset it, not to mention the camera failing to initialize on more than one occasion.

The point being for such a complicated device, the Evo 3D does remarkably well. I wish you well on your iPhone 5, but I am telling you now you are having a pipe dream if you think iPhones don't have problems.

The iPhone 5 promises to be quite a step forward for Apple. Good luck to you with that one, and congratulations on making a choice (even before the device is released and hands on reviews by users have come around ;)).

The iPhone 4 is an excellent handset. Undoubtedly, the 5 will also be a state of the art device.

But there are a lot of world class Android manufacturers today--Samsung, Moto, HTC, just to name a few--and they are making some beautiful phones. I have a Verizon Samsung Fascinate on my desk at work and it is a gorgeous piece of engineering, very slick and polished. Too bad I can't stand Verizon!

I have colleagues with iPhones who say they freeze up a lot and have to be rebooted several times a week. Don't know if it's the apps they use, or just that stuff accumulates after using the phone for a few months.

Point is, no electronics is ever perfect. The Apple forums are full of people complaining about this wifi problem or that sync problem or a hanging problem. Plus, Apple censors apps, so some good stuff doesn't get out to the public.

Also, the iPhone is a much more closed platform. I can connect my Android phone--any android phone--to my Linux workstation using a generic USB cable to charge it and to copy files back and forth. iPhone and iPad require you to run iTunes to "install" files to the device. If I want to put a movie on my Android phone, I just copy it using a file explorer, or even just using a command console, just like a thumb drive, and then I can watch the movie on the handset. Simple, simple.

This is a great point. I do like the simplicity of Android. I just wish it was more stable, more reliable. Instead of cranking out version after version on Android, Google should concentrate on improving Gingerbread.
On the hardware side, a better camera would not hurt either.

Thank you all for you most thoughtful comments. I still have a few weeks to think about this, but I am heavily leaning towards the iphone.

Nobody here is going to tell you not to do what you want. If you really want an iPhone, go for it! In the past I have really wanted an iPhone too. I just love the individuality of my Android. Nobody's Android looks just like mine & the App catalog is getting larger & larger. Any mobile smartphone OS isn't going to be 100% reliable. Including iOS & Android. That's why iOS & Android release new versions & updates.

As for the Evo3D, I have never had mine lock up on me or do anything strange. It's been a great experience! (knock on wood)... I suppose I'm lucky? Frankly, I see the iPhone as more of a status symbol than cutting edge technology, but that is only my opinion.

Anyway! Good luck with whatever you decide, and if you do buy an iPhone 5 please come back and tell me (or us) how you like it compared to your Evo3D. I love to see mature, unbiased, & respectful comparisons between phones. But I sincerely hope you stick with your Evo3D. It's a great device.

My father-in-law has occasionally called on me to help him with some issues with his iPhone 4. It's not that he doesn't know how to use it. Some things didn't work and I had to reinstall apps and stuff like that. For the most part it works, but I just don't see it being significantly more reliable that my HTC Desire Z.

In any case, I would like to hear back from the OP after using the iPhone 5 for a few weeks. I'd be interested to know what his experience with it is compared to his Android phone.

Given how much I love tweaking and customizing, and how much as I love to hate Apple, it's always been hard for me to grasp why people would want to go to iPhone (or Mac, for that matter).

But it's true that in exchange for all that freedom, there is a potential cost, in that there's more that can potentially go wrong.

I'm slowly coming to terms with the reality that, faced with such problems, there are many, many people would rather give away all their power and freedom and just have somebody else tell them what to do, how to do it, and how much they will be honored to pay for the privilege of being led. It just makes things easier that way.

Good luck!

what i love about android is that i'm never bored with it. If i feel myself getting too used to it, i switch my launcher app. i switch my icons, themes, widgets, whatever i really want. Yeah, i've had issues before but they were nothing that an OTA didn't fix. My thunderbolt works great and honestly, i couldn't tell you any problem that i'm currently having.

you know what... I too would love an iPhone, but until Apple put their toys back in their prams & realise that, in todays world, people still want & need flash for day-to-day browsing, then they will still be desperate for our attentions.

How arrogant of them. They truly believe they invented the web, that "flash never existed", & that they invented buttons & icons. And they believe we will obey them like they own us, too. . They make superb computers, iPods, etc... but imo something went wrong beyond that. It smacks of desperation.
