Quad core worth waiting for?

I am fixing to upgrade from non smartphone and have decided to go android. I have a 2yr upgrade i can use but i'm not sure if i want to yet. I want to get a phone, but dont know how long to wait. I am wondering if it is best to get a used phone off ebay such as lg thrill 4g (i'm on att) and wait for quad core first or second quarter next year or will it really be worth it? Is there going to be enough to make it worth getting or will apps and software take a year or two to get in the swing of quad core and be a waste.

I have been waiting on the nexus prime for a while. I want my first experence to be great but i dont want to waste my 2 yr contract option. Should i jump on new phone this year or buy used and wait tell next year?

according to lastest news quad core should be seen in smartphones first of next year. Devices always get better so you wont have the best for long, but i would like a little bit of assurance of being future proofed and buying right before a big change is one way to NOT get that. Thats why i ask

If you are coming from a non-smartphone, basically any high end phone right now would be good.

Personally, I would advice you to go dualcore for now, or even single core. Get the hang of the new system first for a year or so, before starting on going for the best. You'll only know if you need quad core once you get into the system. For example, I'm not much into gaming using my phone, and single core 1Ghz is already pretty sufficient for my needs.

Quad or even Six-core makes lots of sense for desktops or laptops since you can run many apps at the same time, some very heavy like video processing. Less so for phones as you don't want any heavy processing to go in the background.

I'd want a quad core tablet, because I do most of my mobile multimedia/entertainment on the tablet. My dual core phone has more than enough zip as the utility device that it is, so I'm fine with only 2 there.

Agreed... electronics have such a short life-cycle that if you wait for the latest and greatest, you'll always be waiting. And ank yourself this question... how many cores do I really need to send text messages and play Angry Birds?

I agree, that is the problem i keep having. As soon as a new phone is fixing to release while reading up on it, i find another phone beginning to be rumored and how it will have a better this or that. I just decided to make a list of what i wanted and felt was a good long term device. I want a good quality camera, high rez screen, dual core, 1gb ram(i like to do a lot at once...even on my non smartphone i get memory issues with opera running 2 or 3 windows, texting, and running facebook app or something of the sort) and a 4.3" - 5" screen. It seems nexus prime is the only phone going that route. And maybe Moto. Dinara. I also do not like the lag that comes with general use of android on single core and slower dual cores. I"ve used a dual 1ghz at verizon and it was better, but not lag free. I"m hoping for lag free from the new phones coming by christmas and with ICS coming also. I know android needs a lot of power to get the lag out.

Im a big pc buff and i build my own computers and im into specs so thats a lot of it too. Looking for the next amd fx soon for new build

thanks for all the replys. I know at lot of it is hype and getting caught up in it, and at the end of the day when you take something home you realize you really didnt need all the extras and you'll never use the device to its potential.

Lags come depending only on how you set up your phone. My single core SGSL rarely lags until I start throwing HD games at it while some rather heavy stuff are also running in the background.

Why wait when the SGSII version of ATT is coming out. Get that one. It's the Samsung Attain. That'll hold you over for the meantime while the manufacturers start selling stable Quad core phones in 2 yrs.

Yes my phone handles everything pretty well with a single core and i dont need anything better atm but still enjoy seeing more powerful phones being developed even if i dont buy them

Because I prefer to play games on my tablet. My phone is the music/audiobook device. Games demand a lot more from a device than movies and music. So I'd (eventually) want a tablet that has a great processor while my phone can slack off in the processor department.

If its only games that you're really after, go iPad. Seriously.

Anyway, quadcore is a pipedream for now, when dual cores arent even really fully optimized on android yet AFAIK. hardware optimization is better IMO that just slapping better hardware on something that the system cant even use fully. Just look at the quality of games on the iPhone with its optimized software for the hardware.

By the time the first quadcores will be fully optimized, you'll be holding an aged device already.

I despise using iOS too much to use the iPad. In addition, I have moral objections to supporting Apple and their lawsuit machine. I rather have a smaller palette of games on an Android tablet than the library of iPad games.

But my point was that I would rather my tablet have a quad core than my phone, because my tablet does the heavy multimedia / gaming, and my phone does a lot of the things I don't need a screen for.

And my point being is that there is no real point in getting quad core if the system isnt even optimized in using it to its full capability. Its like getting a Ferrari to drive to the office at 40km/hr everyday. You'll be better off buying a dual core now which has better optimization. Think of it as the same Ferrari buy you're using it to drive at 70km/hr.

But its your choice. My point being, quad core is not worth waiting for. Its worth getting one once the system is optimized for it, but waiting to get the first quad core which may work only about as fast as an optimized dual core at the time but way more expensive? Nah.

I'm still waiting on a XBOX or better yet XBOX 360 portable or emulator. If Quad Core can make it happen...I'm all for it!

Well, truth is Win8 isnt for phones, its the desktop OS. As for losing... i'd think there's still a lot more people using Windows than Apple on their computers? Personally though, I'd rather go windows than apple.

I'm not sure if ICS will have support for quad core processors. We don't even have support for dual core phones yet. I don't think it's worth waiting for to be honest. Ice cream sandwich will support dual core but it will take another version of android to take full advantage of quad core and who knows how far android Jelly bean will take to be released.

Personally, I would just get a dual core phone now. The latest phone I would wait for is the Nexus Prime. I could understand if quad cores were like 2 or 3 months away, but it's going to be sometime in Q1 of next year. That's quite a few months to go.

I thought you were referring to Winmo8 in the future. And I was also poking fun. Not being serious.

Haha. Well, WinMo was indeed losing, but after handling a WP7, I'd really think it would be better than iOS. Its so buttery smooth. Its as different from WinMo 6 as much as Android is different from Symbian.

And besides, Win8 desktop will also work for tablets.. its what Windows will throw against Honeycomb or whatever tablet version Android has when the time comes.
