Help Phone crashing when i answer a call

I am always able to answer the phone and talk but as soon as the screen times out and goes black during a call i wont be able to use my phone any more. I can still talk until they hang up but the screen & buttons are frozen with a black screen and I have to take the battery out to use it again.

Any ideas?

You should back up your personal data & reinstall your phone's software using PC Companion.

I have done that using the software called "Update Service", it has wiped my phone so its empty but the problem still happens?

Do you have a cover on the phone as these sometimes interfere with the proximity sensor or the side buttons causing it to freeze. If not and a software repair has not solved the issue then I think it probably needs looking at by an engineer.
