Help Odd Battery Issue

Hi All,

I have just switched from iPhone to SGS2 and have noticed an odd battery issue.

When the phone is connected to my PC via the supplied cable the battery appears to be charging as the icon at the top of the phone is doing its usual animation. I have a battery widget on my home screen and the battery charge level is actually decreasing!!!

Can anyone advise on whether this is normal? I doubt it is!!!

What battery widget do you have installed?

Try running the battery all the way down so the device turns itself off, then charge it to full with the phone switched off. That should calibrate it.

charging thru the usb is very slow, the flow of electricity is very minimal
that being said, u might be doing something that used up more than it's going in

Its called 'battery widget'. I have already fully discharged and recharged since having this app. The screen is also getting very warm, is this normal?

I only got the phone on Tuesday so its still okay to go back to the store!

Every phone I've had for as long as I can remember gets warm/hot while charging.. it shouldn't be that warm when not on the charger.

As jaliy said, charging through USB is very slow so try charging it at the wall before writing it off completely.

Hi thanks for the responses. I have nothing running and the phone is essentially on standby as I have killed all apps using app killer.

My iPhone never got hot while charging and syncing through iTunes yet this is getting hot and discharging whilst connected essentially on standby.

The iPhone is the abnormal device if it doesn't get hot.

My Nokia 5800, HTC Desire and now my SGS2 have all got quite hot whilst charging.

I had a first gen iPhone before that which also got warm, but admittedly nowhere near as much as ^ those three.

Btw, there are plenty of articles which explain why killing tasks is a bad thing and not needed on Android. Even though the SGS2 comes with a task killer I wouldn't recommend it..

Thanks for this info, I am an Android newbie so assumed if one is provided it would be useful to use. I have put it in to the wall charger to see if the USB is the issue. If not it is going back tomorrow!

Most people report little to no benefit from using a task killer, and they are known to cause problems with many apps. Android has a complex multitasking implementation and manages tasks really well on its' own.

That's not to say a task killer has no use at all; they're good for killing a rogue app if needed, but that's about it in my experience.

Hmm that does sound unusual, mine is fairly hot but I wouldn't say uncomfortably so. Does your phone get as hot when charging at the wall? Have you tried a different USB port? You are using the charger that came in the box?

Hopefully the wall charge will solve the problem.

I would say so yeah.

Other phones are coming out with faster clocked processors and higher resolution cameras but don't let that fool you, they're just numbers.

So put my phone into the wall charger, lo and behold it cooled down and charge increased to 25%

I put it on to a different usb port and the phone heated up and lost 4% in 20 minutes.

Definately smelling a rat with the phone!

If the phone charges okay using the wall charger that would indicate, to me at least, that it's the USB port that's the problem. Try it on a different computer if you can, or try the USB ports around the back rather than the ones round the front (or the front, if you're using the back ones).
