Root Finally rooted my EVO but...

So I finally rooted my EVO 4G using the guide in this forum. Everything went great. The phone is snappier than ever. The problem is, every mod I flash is slower than molasses and I end up going back to stock. I have partitioned the sd card, went back and changed the size of the partition, wiped multiple times before each flash and still the same result. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
First I need to edit my initial post. I meant to say ROM instead of mod, sorry.
As for the ROMs I have tried, they are Mijjah74z_Merge_Beta_2.0, Mijjah74z_Merge_rls_1.6.1_Nightly, Team-Nocturnal-SHOOTER_RLS_2.4-Odex, and signed_Team-Nocturnal-SHOTER_RLS_2.3. as well as stock. I'm using Amon-Ra 2.3. Im about to unroot it and start all over with a blank page.

signed_Team-Nocturnal-SHOTER_RLS_2.3 I'm on this right now and it does take it a second to "wakeup" but its pretty smooth. Only on it for 24 hours though. I'm running it with Freedom .9 Kernel.

I waited about 48 hrs for it to settle usng the kernal it came with and it just felt like it was getting slower. It felt like the built in task manager was killing my apps before they were completely loaded. The "running services" tab was showing a constant 250+ free ram but felt like it was being held at that point regardless of what was running.

Im new to rooting so flashing a new kernal at this time is a bit intimidating to me atm. But Im reading everything i can get my hands on here and over at xda.

there really is no need to unroot. what are you wiping? what kernel are you using? are you overclocking your phone? try mikg or mik3d as well.

I've wiped dalvik, cache, and data as well as the sd card ext at least 3 times each before flashing any new rom as stated in the guides I've read.

nanroid
wipe
wipe
wipe
flash

I have made sure to xfer my nandroids to my pc instead of leaving them all on the sd card. So there is only one nandroid on the card at any given time.
