Hi all,

I am sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I have had a good look around and nothing seems to quite fit my problem.

My contacts on my Desire S are very messy having been transferred from another phone and an outlook account. I have several duplicates of contacts saved in a variety of different places on the phone, i.e sim card, phone etc.....

So I want to clean them up and I understand the best way to do this is via googlemail and then put them back on my phone again.

Firstly I am not sure how to get the contacts onto my googlemail account from my phone and then, once I have cleaned them up, what is the best way to get them back onto the phone again?

Sorry I will probably need a basic step by step way as I have read the other posts and havent got a clue what people are talking abount.

I would be grateful for someones help

Thanks

BlueRose

Well after much searching I managed to get my contacts onto gmail and have successfully cleaned them up from 477 to 217. Yayness to me!!!!! I have deleted all the contacts off my phone and am now trying to sync my phone with my gmail account.......and nothing is happening lol. Gmail remains with 217 contacts and my Desire only has facebook contacts. I have checked the 'view' and there is definately nothing other than facebook.

How can I sync my gmail back to my phone now?

Thanks

Go to the Contacts app, go to Settings, go to Accounts. Is your Google account located there? If so, is sync on?

If the Google account is there, and sync is on, then the phone is just not displaying the stuff in your Google account. Go back to the app, go to Settings, Display Options, and there is a section "Select contacts to display". Your accounts are there, including options to filter out certain groups from accounts. Mark them all, tap 'Done'.

Here's how to save all your contacts to your Google account.

Make sure you have 'Sync contacts' checked in Menu > Settings > Accounts & sync > Google > Sync contacts.

People > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card > Export once for each account. E.g. if you have contacts that are held on your SIM, Phone and Gmail account, you need to export one file for each.

At this point, you might want to check you've done this correctly. Connect the USB cable to your computer and phone, and, using Windows Explorer look for the .vcf files on the root of your phone's SD card. You may want to copy the latest to your computer for an extra back-up. (Alternatively, you can use an app like ASTRO File Manager to do this.)

Home screen > Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Contacts Storage > Clear data - this will wipe all your contacts from your phone's memory, not your SD card.

People > Menu > Import/Export > Import from SD card > Select the Google option (your Gmail account) > Select 'Import multiple vCard' files > From the list, select the files you just made. These will be the ones with the highest number in the file name. If you exported your SIM, Google and Phone contacts, you'll need to 'check' one file for each. If you select more than one per contact-type, you could end up with multiple copies of the same contact > After you've pressed OK, the files will be imported and should all appear in 'People', all as Google contacts.

Log-in to your online Gmail account, and go to the 'Contacts' section where all your contacts will be listed as and when your phone syncs.

When you select 'Export to SD card', you'll see a window that says 'Please select an account to export'. Underneath you'll see at least SIM and Phone, and perhaps some more accounts, including Google. If you don't see a Google account, you'll have to add one to your phone.

It's possible you'll have a different set of contacts stored in each of these places - a set of contacts stored in your Phone, a set stored in your SIM, and one set stored as Google contacts. This will all depend on how you originally transferred your contacts from your old phone to the Desire S. It will also depend on how you choose to add new contacts. In order to make sure you're backing up all your contacts, you need to go through this part of the procedure for each account or place where your contacts could be stored. If in doubt, export the contacts for each entry you see.

So, if you see SIM, Phone and Google in the list, then you need to do the following:

1) People > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card > Google. This will save all your Google contacts (from that specific account) to a .vcf file on your SD card. (If you have more than one Google account, you'll need to do this for each of them.)

2) People > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card > Phone. This will save all your Phone contacts to a .vcf file on your SD card.

3) People > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card > SIM. This will save all your SIM contacts to a .vcf file on your SD card.

You'll then have three (or more) separate .vcf files on your SD card, which you'll then use to import to a single Google account.
