Welcome schluchtner(or cammykool's mother). The best thing to do after reading the manual is to Turn Everything off unless you need it. WiFi,Data, bluetooth,GPS,Auto sync(these will drain the battery if left on). All those can be found in your menu. You should have a widget app on the phone, but it's been so long since my phone was stock, I cant' remember which of the above^ mentioned items it will allow you to put on the screen so you don't have to keep going in to your menu.Maybe your son or another member could run you through the steps and what all it will allow you to control from the home screen. You can also download any number of widget apps from the market.

Don't worry about apps that appear to be running unless they show an Icon and a % of battery usage in the "About Phone" section of your menu. To check there go to menu/settings/about phone/Battery use.

Download App 2 SD from the market. This will allow you to move all apps to the sd card that are allowed. Do not attempt to put the widget app on the sd card. It will not work unless it's on the phones memory.

If you decide you want to purchase any apps that cost money then go to WalMart and get a Green Dot Visa card and only put on it what you expect to purchase(they can't get what's not there)

Also: Some "V"s have a "Time Without Signal" bug that will drain the battery because the phone keeps looking for a signal. This can be fixed every time you turn the phone on, by turning airplane mode on for 30sec. then turn airplane mode off.

Feel free to ask any other questions you might have right here in this thread you have started. There will be plenty of members that got freely ,and because of that, will give freely.

We all started out not knowing anything about the "V"(I was a "Nuub" to end all "Nuub"s,Totaly wet behind the ears when it came to smart phones and computers).Reading the posts in these threads and asking questions, along with some helpful advice here and there, and the next thing you know, you will be giving advice to a new member. That's how it works around here: You get freely,You give freely

It's better to let her get a feel for the phone and what she likes and dislikes. If she wants to root after having it for a while, then it should be her choice as to what best suits her needs. She is after all free to make up her own mind.
