Help 3G drops off until restart, anyone else??

There are a few threads about this issue already. VZW customer service claims there will be an update in November that will fix this. It appears not everyone has the problem so I'm waiting on a replacement unit myself in hopes that I don't have to put up with it while waiting for a fix. Nor am I confident that this is a problem that can be fixed with a software update. A quick workaround is to go into airplane mode and back out and it should reset.

I have had this happen about 4 times since having the phone(got it on launch day). If they arent going to have a fix until Nov its definitely going back. Going into airplane mode doesnt even fix it for me, I have to do a full reboot.

Yes, I am having this problem in a big way.

If you are always in a strong 4g area then you will have no problem
If you are always in a strong 3g area then you will have no problem

But

If you move between 4g and 3g or have weak 3G or 4G you are going to loose connection and it may not come back for a while or rebooting the device. Verizon says it

I had this problem for a day or two but it has seemed to clear up. When it did happen, I would just turn on airplane mode for about 30 seconds and then turn it off. It seemed to fix it everytime. Turning on airplane mode and immediately cutting it off did not seem to work. You have to leave it on for a few and then cut it off. I have not had a problem with it in a few days. I am not sure what the difference is now.

I'm pretty sure that this *is* a software issue. I upgraded to the Bionic from the OG Droid. I never had any problems with the Droid until I installed a Gingerbread ROM. Immediately, I started having a weird issue where my phone would randomly drop the data connection, requiring that I toggle airplane mode or reboot to get it back. Sound familiar? Anyway, I went back to Froyo, and I didn't have the issue again until I brought my Bionic home and started experiencing the same *exact* issue. It seems to be a Gingerbread problem with re-acquiring a data connection when the connection is interrupted.

Anyway, it's good to hear that Moto is working on a fix for this...hopefully it will do the job.

I called Verizon tech support today. Got transferred to a high level of support (higher that the first person I spoke to at least). Was told that when transferring service from a 3G-only phone (like my original Droid) to a 3G/4G (Bionic) phone, that the account is not always routed correctly (or something like that) which will cause even 3G service to drop. She had me turn off the phone, reset the account, and then turn the phone back on. My 3G service has been fine all day today. She is scheduled to call me tomorrow to follow up (that's great service). Hopefully that solved the problem.

I'm wondering if everyone with this problem has upgraded from a 3G-only phone.

I have returned one Bionic due to the battery drain problem, the replacement now has the data connectivity issue. I use the app called "Restart Connections" https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dazbradbury.restartConnections&feature=search_result

It works really well to restore the data connection, but usually just the 3G comes back. It takes awhile for the 4G to come back. I am currently waiting for my third Bionic in hopes that the third time is a charm...We will see.

UPDATE: I got my third Bionic yesterday and it has stayed connected consistently to either 4G or 3G when transitioning between each. No data signal lost as of yet. I have been using it heavily to try and get it to drop again, but so far so good...I will update again if it happens again. Guess if you continue to return these you might end up getting a good one.

a faster solution to rebooting i found is to try to make a call...any call, i just dial voicemail and hangup immediately. 3g comes back instantly.

When I first got my Bionic (launch day) I had issues in both the Bay Area, and along the way to Las Vegas and in Vegas (where there was generally a strong 4G signal in most places) with 4G/3G not coming back on after losing the signal. EVERY time I'd see the 1x icon, I'd NEVER get 3/4G back, without going to airplane mode for a moment. I ended up placing a shortcut to Airplane mode on the home screen. I've only had to use that a few times and haven't needed to use it recently, oddly enough.

When I was driving between SJ and LV, I'd know when I SHOULD have had a 3G signal, because my wife's BB was almost always on 3G the entire trip. So after a few minutes of no signal on the Bionic, I'd do the "airplane" thing. Worked every time, whenever her BB currently showed 3G.

FOLLOWUP: As of yesterday and today, 3G problems are back. Guess again, Verizon. We either need a firmware update or a class action lawsuit. Can you hear me now?

I am having the same problem and have only had my Bionic for three days now. I have noticed that if I walk away from the phone for about 15 minutes the chance of me coming back to the phone and loosing data connectivity is very high. This usually happens to me 3-4 times a day!!! airplane mode does work most of the time, the rest of the time I am cursing at the phone.

If this does not get fixed soon I will be marching back into the verizon store for a razr. I do love the Bionic, when it works.

I've also installed this. It worked to restore 3G for me last night. It didn't help this morning, nor did toggling airplane mode. I had to restart the phone. This is getting old fast.
