Help Can't access market

For the past week or so, the market has barely been working on my phone - takes forever to load, keeps force closing and won't display the 'My Apps' section. So today I decided to be slightly naughty and downloaded the apk of the newest android market (3.1.3) to see if that would help get rid of these issues.

I went into Astro, pressed 'Upgrade' on the apk and installed it. However, when I opened up the market, it repeatedly kept saying 'Connection timed out. Please re-try.' After several tries (and turning 3G on and off etc) it came up saying 'Authorisation needed. Please sign into your google account.' I am signed into my google account, and when I press menu -> accounts on the market it shows up as being signed in.

I have just uninstalled that version of the market and it is now back to the original market that I had (2.3.4) but it will not load anything whatsoever. It sits at the loading page and every few minutes displays the message - 'A network error has occured. Retry or cancel and return to the previous screen. I have also tried to install an app from the market website, and although it says it will be downloaded, it doesn't actually show up on my phone.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? I cannot get onto the market at all and i'm worried I might have to reset my phone entirely.

I'm puzzled by this as I am still on v2.3.4 and haven't been notified of any upgrade. A while back I read an article detailing the new-look Market that we'd be getting ( Google revamps Android market for phones (Wired UK) ) but I am still on the old version.

Searching the Android Market for "Android Market" gives no results on my phone. If I do the same search on my PC, I get one result which is shown as being incompatible with my DHD, clearly because it's "Optimized for the tablet form-factor and Android 3.0..."

So have others received the reported upgrade or did this never happen?

Thanks,

John

Thanks for the link. It seems to run ok and looks like a useful upgrade, but I'm experiencing one problem that is listed as a known issue: If I go to Menu/My Apps, I only get six (out of maybe two dozen) listed - the four I've paid for, plus Google Maps and YouTube. Interestingly, if I go to the page for an unlisted but installed app, that page does show it as being installed, so the issue seems to be about the way the My Apps list is being populated. I've done the usual... clearing data and cache and pulling the battery, but this hasn't helped.

Update: having left things a while, it's clear that I am no longer being notified of app updates, so I've un-installed this version of the Market and gone back to v2.3.4 (whereupon I was immediately notified of two updates). In order to get the complete apps list back, I had to do the following: go into settings/apps and clear Market data and cache and then un-install the upgrade. Then launch the Market app and un-install and re-install one (any one) of the installed apps not showing on the My Apps list. On completing this, the original apps list re-appears.
