Android for HP TouchPad?

Even if they got an Android app emulator to work, I'd still want full Android. Beyond lack of apps, my biggest complaint is lack of customization. I don't want my apps to be stuck in boring little rows within app tabs. I don't want to have to open an app to get specific information, like weather. I don't want to have an empty home screen, with nothing but one little row of icons at the bottom. I am constantly tweaking and customizing the look and feel of my phone, why shouldn't I be able to do the same with my tablet?

I disagree. I like the row with app tabs as I think it's closer to how real people work. I think there is an app in the market that re-arranges things though. I'm drawing a blank on it. It starts with an M (I think) and was one of the free apps HP gave away last month.

Edit: My memory is horrible. The app is named Glimpse. Is on sale for .99. I might buy it.

As long as it's easy to install and boot and I can buy/download apps and games from the Android market, I'll be happy. Of course, I don't want any bugs or glitches, but that goes without saying really.

No bugs or glitches might be a longer wait. That's the description of a "stable" build.

A release candidate (RC1, RC2, etc) might be good enough for you. Everything else is considered a nightly build, some good, some not so. On the Nook Color (CM7), RC1 came out many weeks ago, most builds are pretty good and still no "stable" build.

Update from Twitter.... Estimates put the port at 60% - 70% of completion. Accelerometer is working putting the list of working components at Accelerometer, 10 finger multi-touch support, hardware acceleration for graphics. Somewhat working are WiFi and sound. Not yet started are Bluetooth, camera, and compass

I don't know much about this sort of thing. What exactly does that graph represent?

It's a speed benchmark that's intended to show how much faster your device is compared to other android devices (phones in this case). My understanding is that is at the stock 1200 mhz speed.

Did you notice the home, menu, back, search, status buttons on that screenshot above? Also, there's two icons from apps updated from Market. On the right side, it's set to vibrate, but that might be b/c sound isn't working yet. Also notice the "?" for the battery so that isn't working yet.

This is one for my Nook Color, overclocked to 1300 (single core). FWIW, this is my personal best, which means I probably ran it 60 times and never got a higher score. I have seen 1700 for a score as well tho.

YouTube might need Flash or a video codec to work.

Different strokes for different folks. You(?) asked what, other than lack of apps, would drive somebody to want Android on this thing, and I simply provided my reasoning for why I'd prefer full Android to webOS or even an emulated version of Android. I personally love to tinker with my phone's appearance (check out my other posts here - like half of them are in the "Post your phone's desktop" threads).


I'm so excited by the progress! It's moving so quickly! I'm really enjoying watching this unfold, even if I don't always know what everything means (Linux is a big blank spot on my map of geekiness). Is there a donate fund or something, where we can show our appreciation to CM for all their speedy, awesome, hard work?

I hope this one isn't true:

9. Will CM release the Touchpad port without support for feature X that I really don't care about?

No. CyanogenMod's plan is to release when all features supported by the hardware are at 100%. If this changes, which it is not at all likely to, the CM team will make the announcement. Asking them will not help push them to make a decision in any way, shape or form.

I'd rather see it when when it's usable, but stable... I don't care about BT or camera at this point.

I bet I could live with what it's like right now, as long as there's a weekly build.

Do you know if the Touchstone stand works or if they plan to have it working on Android?
Seems like the charging feature is hardware and wouldn't be an issue to tie into Android, unless you want to enable the automatic slideshow/clock features while charging.

The charging should work, but I would think enough developers have one so detection of the dock should happen to. (I always disable that myself)

I'm on vacation this week and have been VERY BORED.

colchiro, have the said what the install is going to be like? Do you think it will be straight forward or will we have to bend through a lot of loops?

I don't think it's set in stone yet, but I think you might install the first time thru the native HP app, webOS Quick Install (which you'd also use to unbrick it). If you followed the tweaking guides, you should already have this.

After the initial install, you should be able to update it via CWM Recovery in Rom Manager, like any other Android device.

Dalingrin has also said dual boot will be the default, but Android-only will also be an option for those with no use for webOS. It's possible an updated boot touch menu, (instead of volume up/down press home button), might be considered. I know a "reboot-to-boot-menu" item is on the to-do list.

I think this is going to be very cool.
