Help Does Mobile data turn off when Wifi is on?

Just curious does mobile data (4g/3g/1x) turn off when I turn on my Wifi? Or does it run together?

Because on my old phone the LG Optimus when you have wifi turned on, mobile data turns off which saves power and does all the data stuff through wifi such as calls, browsing, etc.

Also on the optimus when wifi would be turned on the mobile data symbol such as 1x or 3g logo would go away so I knew mobile data was turned off but on the indulge when I turn on wifi the mobile data symbol 4G still shows so I am unsure if mobile data turns off when I turn on the WiFi on the indulge.

In a sense it does turn it off in that Wi-Fi supersedes mobile data for virtually all data transmission while it is turned on. The mobile data remains connected for things like a multimedia message to be sent or received, but it is essentially dormant and consuming little to no power while Wi-Fi is connected.

So, because Wi-Fi handles the data while it is on and connected, battery is saved because Wi-Fi generally uses quite a bit less power than mobile data. You can TOTALLY turn off mobile data in the Settings menu, but then you would not be able to send or receive multimedia messages or use carrier services that require a mobile data connection.

besides MMS, what kind of stuff has to be done over 3G or 4G as opposed to wifi?

Thanks. Does this apply to most (or all) Android phones? I have the HTC Inspire on AT&T, so if I have both WiFi and Mobile Data on and the phone has a WiFi connection, then all data (internet, email synch) is through Wifi, not the mobile data connection?

Ran a test at work. Left WiFi on and turned on Mobile Data. Let the phone synch to corporate email all day (every 15 minutes). Checked my usage through AT&T and no data plan usage recorded. So I have to conclude that with both on and a good WiFi connection, the phone uses Wifi.
