Help me choose a phone? :D

Hey!

I've been looking for a replacement phone, I was looking at the iPhone but quite frankly I think that AndroidOS has more room for expansion what with it being an open OS.

So the hunt for android phones began, I've narrowed it down to two phones now, the Samsung Nexus S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play but I can't chose which one.

From what I've read they're very similar performance wise, but you can't be consumer opinion so can I get some opinions from owners?

Also;
What kind of sim card does the Xperia Play use?
Is there anything one can do that the other cant?

I was looking at those forums but felt because this was about both phones would it not be better to ask in a general forum. But I'll make new topics in those forums unless a moderator wants to move this one?

I recommend the Nexus S, so that you get the fastest software updates, and vanilla Android experience.

However, if you're into gaming, the Xperia play is probably better. What are your priorities for a phone?

I figured since you were asking about two specific models it would be best asked in those forums. It would weed out the static of the other million or so users who have neither model

Personally, I'd go with the Nexus S. Open bootloader, vanilla Android...more options overall. I'm not sure how strong the Xperia dev community is, though.

Well I do like gaming, which is what kind of drew me to the Xperia Play, but I wasn't sure about what the Nexus S had over the Xperia. I'm interested in the Minecraft game for it and I've heard that can only be played on the Xperia.

Also I'm interested in seeing how the N64 emulator runs on the Xperia and the Nexus!

Yeah true, I shall leave it up to the moderators and see what they do .

Not at all. Most of what you can find in the Android market can be ran without rooting (the Android name for 'jailbreaking'). Open/unlocked bootloader means that you can install customized ROMs, kernels, recoveries, and other options that are developed by third parties. Not something you need to worry about for your first month or two with the phone. But something to keep in mind if you want to expand your usage of your phone to include modifying it.

Ah right, I tend to shy away from modifying things not because I'm technologically inept but because when I do, no matter if I follow guides or not, things stop working.

Though it's also nice to have that as a fall back option.

My vote is for the Nexus S, I absolutely love mine. Although, that is a really tough choice. I've always wanted an Xperia Play just so I could use the control pad. If you have any interest in playing emulators go with the Play.

I play some emulators with my PS3 controller on my Nexus S which is great, but it's kind of hard managing to find a place to put your phone while playing.

Is minecraft available for the Nexus S? Or is it still only Xperia Play?
And how well do the emulators run on it?

If there is really no difference what so ever I may just get the Xperia on account it has the slide out controller. Whats the camera like on the Xperia?
