Root Feeling like a n00b all over again..

Well, I made the leap to the Bionic from my OG Droid. I had the OG rooted and it came in handy at times but it seemed like my phone was insanely glitchy at the end. I love the Bionic but man have things changed. I didn't even have a root planned but reading into it again I think I want to go for it again, I just feel so lost! Everything seems so foreign since the last time I looked at all of this so please be patient. I read through a good bit of stuff and I'm not looking for anything too special.

The main reason for this is to get some apps froze that are unnecessary that Motorola just HAD to put on there. I like hitting my task killer and seeing "529M Memory Available" but I hate seeing it drop and drop to 400M as the day goes on.
I also tried looking into SMS and Call Log backups which I would love to have. I got SMS Backup+ to backup to my Gmail but when I go to restore it on my Bionic it says "0/9339 backed up, dupes only" after it already acted as if it were backing everything up (which took hours). So if you have any apps that you like for that sort of thing by all means let me know.
Lastly, I want to get my old apps back but I thought I should ask for suggestions to add or subtract to my list.. AdFree, Titanium Backup, Astro, CPUBoost, & Terminal Emulator.

Thanks in advance!

First off, love the name.

I am not sure about the SMS backup apps. I have never really had a use for them. But in regards to your other wanted apps: CPU boost as far as I know will not work right now since the bootloader is still pretty much locked up and no custom kernels can be flashed yet.

The rest of the apps should work (as far as I know). I am not sure what other purpose Astro would serve since there is already a file manager preinstalled.

also there is not a need for a task killer. it will do more harm than good. Also those apps you want froze are mainly not Moto's doing but VZW's doing.

I would suggest to start out with just Root and get TiBu to freeze and do the backups you want to do.

I think i saw on twitter last night that the first debloated ROM is now out for the Bionic. So i'm sure within the next two weeks there will be a lot more.

I'm already rooted and running the first ROM (kinda). ;) I am using Titanium Backup Pro, and have ALL of my apps/settings/texts from my OG Droid.

The major thing that has changed is the need to backup up "stuff" or move "stuff" to the (external) SDcard. The Bionic comes with an internal 8Gb SDcard, as well as the external 16Gb card. I'm using the external card just for pics, videos, and music (and ROMs and assorted files). Everything else can just stay on the internal card memory for all I care. Just some food for thought.

Welcome to Bionica!!!

Thanks guys! And nice name Ben haha. Okay I did the root and that was almost too easy. I have titanium backup on the OG and the Bionic now. My [stupid] question is where does it back to? Do I need the pro version to transfer/restore call logs and sms?

not sure but i would suggest getting the pro version anyways. You want it trust me.

I have my TiBu Pro pointing to sdcard-ext, which is the external sdcard. But I don't think this was it's default location. I had to use TiBu's "DETECT!" (in preferences > Backup folder location) feature to find my backups on my sdcard the first time I used it.

HTH

I too made the move from OG to Bionic, God i love my bionic. My OG droid was acting up something terrible. I will be rooting tomorrow or the day after, to get rid of the bloat. It really does piss me off that companies such as big red bogs down phones with this kind of crap. The nearest blockbuster to me is about 200 miles away... I am very much looking forward to rom & kernel options. I know the devs are working hard for us, yet again!

just as a point of reference:

I froze only 20 apps that I know I will never use, and with my 200+ apps installed I usually have ~290 MB free. Going strong.

Extended battery is giving me 28+ hours on a single charge with light usage, well over 15 on heavy. And I bought a spare to keep charged to easily swap out when needed :D

For Call log and SMS backups, I use both apps from Ritesh Sahu :

OK, here is the deal with our BIONICs versus older devices.

Older devices usually only had one source of 'external' storage - meaning anything not internal, as in a part of the OS / App storage / etc. So, on those phones, the SDCard was mounted in the Android operating system as /SDCard.

With our BIONICs, however, Motorola did something funky (or else Android 2.3.x did, not sure where it all began, honestly) in that we have and 'internal' 8 GB of space called /sdcard and an external 16 GB of space (that removable microSD card) named /sdcard-ext. The changing of the name of the removable microSD from /sdcard to /sdcard-ext is throwing a lot of apps for a loop - b/c they are hardcoded to read and write to /sdcard.

So, the solution is pretty simple - copy the contents of /sdcard-ext/SMSBackupRestore to the folder /sdcard/SMSbackupRestore.

Then you'll be able to see all your old backups as well.

Proof:

As you can see, I have backups in there that are older than this phone's release.

Note: You'll probably have to do this for other apps as well to be able to see your old data (of course, the directory will change based upon the app). Thus far, the only thing that I see using the actual removable microSD for data storage are (from the apps that I have installed:

  • ROM Manager
  • Titanium Backup
  • Beautiful Widgets

One more thing - feel free to ask about TiBu (Chemical elemental symbol for Titanium, Ti, and Backup - I always refer to it like this, so do a lot of others, but there are other variations as well) in here - we've got lots of folks that are old pros at this program, and can give you lots of hints, tips, etc.

Thank you for all of your help sir! That definitely makes more sense why my phone can't find them. My stupid question is how do you go about changing the folder/path?

I am still really new to TiBu as well, but if you are referring to moving the back up folder to your SD-EXT...Use Files App or Astro (whatever file manager you like). Go to Internal - and then copy the TitaniumBackup Folder - navigate to SD Card - Paste. Go back to Internal and Delete TitaniumBack Folder. Go into Titanium Back up - Preferences - Backup folder location - DETECT. It will locate the folder for you on you SD CARD.

That should do it.

Haha nope, just pure coincidence I guess. I feel so technology stupid at this point it's ridiculous. I pretty much wanted to backup my sms, mms and call logs to my sd card on my Droid and take the sd card out and put it in my Bionic and hit restore. I can go to Files on my Bionic and go to SD card and the backup files are there, but when I go to my Call Logs Backup & Restore or SMS Backup & Restore app, it says there's nothing in the folder /mnt/sdcard/CallLogBackupRestore/ folder. God I'm so close... :(

Are the backups on the internal or external sd card. Sounds like your backups are on ext and the app is looking on the internal
