Root ROOTING For Dummies

Just so I understand this, Clockworkmod will back up my settings ie home screens and such and TB will back up and reinstall my apps? I'd like to try some other roms but don't want to have to redo all my settings and such.

Also where do I find which version of Clockworkmod I have I am using the CyanogenMod 7.0.3.1

TIA
Rick

when you go into recovery it will say it. clockwork mod is your recovery. you will use it to make nandroid backups. nandroid backups are a snapshot of the current state of your phone. all of your settings and data will be baked up. you will need titanium backup to backup your apps and its data. you will also use it to restore your apps after you flash a new rom. unfortunately, when you flash a rom you will be wiping data and will have to get everything setup again as you like it.

+1 on what ocn said. It's really not that bad once you get around to doing it a bunch. It's highly recommended for all fresh flashes to wipe everything prior to flashing and highly NOT recommended restoring any system/data with TB from rom to rom. Restoring apps and data, you shouldn't have an issue, but generally it's good not to.

Due to physical difficulties, I had to get a new EVO from Sprint.
I'v already Rooted using Revolutionary.
So here come the questions...
1. I want to run Amon Ra. Is there a different version since I have 2.3.3 from the one I used for my old phone?
2. Is there a different version of MikG I need to install from the one on my old phone? I NEED MY MIKG!!!

Thanks in advance as always for the help!!!

1. Nope 2.3 is the latest amon ra
2. 2.52 is the latest Mikg. However you need to install 2.5 first (full wipe), then patches 2.51 and 2.52 all in separate recovery sections after wiping only cache/dalvik.

Also you might check out newts runnymede sense 3.5 ROM, its pretty nice. It's in the EVO 4G section of the mikmik.

You're killin' me, Nick!!!
You told me about MikG and now there's another one?!?!
I trust you, dude! MikG was the best but I can't wait to try this new one tonight! Does Newts Runnymede Sense 3.5 use Darktremors? That's very important for me.

So tonight I'll...
1. Flash Amon Ra
2. Flash Newts Runnymede Sense 3.5 ROM
3. Go to sleep at some point in the not so distant future...

Thanks as always!!!

Haha..I hear ya man. It's pretty sweet rom and yes it does have a2sd, just like mikg does.

He just put up beta 5 today, I've flashed it and am running it now...pretty impressive stuff considering he doesn't even have an evo to test/build with.

So once mik gets a hold of it and opts it, it's going to be the bomb.

EDIT: You are on the latest build of Amon Ra so no need to flash that. ;)

it will depend on the keyboard but yes you should be able to. i believe the cm7 is the only rom that supports the same bluetoooth needed to get it working. follow this guide:Use your EVO as a "Desktop PC", Now With CM7 Goodness!!! - xda-developers.

That's cool, I really think this is where we are going with the phones nowadays. Especially once "true" 4g gets to everywhere, no need for ISP's and computers.

Pretty crazy to think about, but I think we will eventually be there. And if google gets the OS I've heard rumors about them doing; then it will be just a matter of time before we start getting better MS Office type products/programs to run on our phones.

1. What in your opinion makes Newts Runnymede Sense Rom better than MikG? I tried it but I still like MikG better. I'm trying to get past the personal preference and see if there's something about Newts that I didn't realize that makes it better than MikG.

2. As for MikG, I installed 2.5, then the 2.51 & 2.52 patches like you said. The question is, should I use the patch with the kernel or without? I'm not too clear on what a kernel is and whether or not I should use a different one. Can you shed some light on the this?

3. I just got another 16G Class 4 card. The dude at Best Buy tried to swear me up & down that the EVO can't handle a Class 10 card because the card reads faster than the phone can so it basically can't keep up and causes a lag. Have you ever heard of this?

4. When I switch from the stock 8Gig Card to the new 16Gig, I need to partition the card for Darktremor. SOOOoooooooo....
The question is, after I do a Nandroid Backup of course, then partition the card,...
a. can I flash the backup of the phone as it is now, or
b. do I need to flash the Rom from scratch again, or
c. Is this a question only for The MikMik Forum? lol

5. Why am I so addicted to my EVO? SMDH

6. GO RAVENS!!!

6. GO RAVENS!!!

1. Well all depends on your wants and needs. As of now MikG is obviously a little better just because it's stable and everything works. However, Mik is on the scene with the Runnymede rom so give it another week or two and it will be where it's at. It's very nice and I had a good time showing my brother, who owns a 3D, that my phone was running a newer OS/build than his was.

2. If you are running a custom kernel then flash the one without the kernel so that you will keep your custom kernel. The kernel is basically what communicates with phone to tell it what to do with what drivers/software/etc/etc.

3. He's an idiot, I've never heard of such a thing and was completely making that crap up. He's obviously never flashed a MikRom. ;)

4.
a. Not sure, I tried and it didn't work for me, some others have tried and it worked fine for them, so hopefully you are a lucky one.
b. You might need to, but if you do....lucky you...Mik updated to 2.53 to include all the patches and updates he did with the 2.51 and 2.52 patches into one rom. :D
c. These questions are always good for the MikMik forum.

5. Well Mik does some other things to his Roms that make you addicted. :D

6. Ummm.. Go Rams :thinking: I mean go CARDINALS!!! :D

1.newt just started the project going and mik is now taking it over. i think that mik is just an awesome dev. his roms are always the fastest and the most stable of any roms i have tried. i love his work. i do not know newt too much so i cannot say too much on his work. i am on beta 6 of this rom and it is pretty sweet so far.

2.please read this thread:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/389360-kernels-dummies.html. hopefully it might shed some light on what kernels are and what they can do for you. if you have
more questions on it, please feel free to ask.

as far as what to flash, if you have a custom kernel already when you were on mkg2.5 and you want to keep that kernel then just flash the patch without the kernel.

3.i have a patriot 16g class 10 card and have zero issues with it. i have never heard of an evo not being able to handle a class 10 card. not sure what that best buy employee was telling you that.

4.a.yes you can nandroid restore back after you partitioned.
b.it helps if you do, but it is not necessary
c.no you can post any questions about rooting here.
5.LMOA the evo is crack my friend and it is hard to shake off.

1. MIKG VS. NRSR: Thank you, both! I'm clear.

2. KERNELS: Is it a problem for me to flash a Kernel after I flash MikG? In other words, I have to put my EVO on the operating table tonight to take care of the partition, etc. but I haven't decided on which Custom Kernel yet. Does the Kernel have to be flashed before the ROM? Can wait until later when I decide then do a Nand Backup, flash the Kernel, then restore that Nand Backup?
OR, will I have to wipe everything and start from scratch in this order; Kernel, ROM, SMS Restore/Apps etc.
(Wait 'til I start asking about RADIOS!!! Whew!!! )

3. SD CARD CLASS: Cool! I'm going to stick with the 16Gig Class 4 for now until I can avoid enough bills to buy a 32Gig Class 10! (Maybe Santa Claus...)

4. PARTITION PROCESS: I'll go ahead and take the long route. It's that whole "Sense of accomplishment" thing from doing it all over again! lol
I KEEP LOSING the steps to partitioning the card. I think I used "Terminal Emulator" or something. Any suggestions? I NEED Darktremor to run right. My son & I are app junkies!!!

5. Yes, the EVO IS Crack!!! I don't even try to convert the iPeople anymore!!! lol I stopped saying, "It'll make you feel good...good..good..."
Nick, you're right! Just like how I'm in love with MikG!!!

6. Nick, you see what we did with the Rams, right? Hehehe
Good luck to your Cardinals!!! I'm getting behind them just for you, now. ANYTHING but "Them Damn Yankees!!!"
Ocn, we're going to make Phillip CRY Rivers!!!

But, I digress...

2. kernels can be flashed at any time. every rom comes with its own kernel. usually it is the stock htc kernel. so if you have a particular kernel in mind you will have to flash it aftwards. also you have to flash the correct kernel with the correct rom. in other words if you flash an aosp rom then you need to flash an aosp kernel. also if you flash a gingerbread or froyo sense rom then you need to flash a froyo kernel for a froyo rom and a gingerbread kernel for a gingerbread rom.

and one last thing on kernels, it will always vary from phone to phone. what works for me may not work for you. so the only way to know what is a good kernel for you would be to make a nandroid backup and try one.

4.please read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. it has a partitioning section with instructions.

well after the bolts played the way they did against the chiefs that may be so. but we are always a slow starter, so will see who is crying at the end of the season.

Had a question about flashing the radio. I am running the MikG 2.52 but was thinking to update the radios I wanted to know if this would be the correct radio to download:
EVO_Radio_2.15.00.08.08_WiMAX_27243_PRI_NV_2.15_00 3 - also would it work with the MikG?

Also if supposedly this radio isnt for me should I just do a nandroid restore for the old one to come back? Also someone had mention about a tutorial about flashing radios could you kindly post that again.

Thanks!

i do not know of any tutorial. there is not much really to it. but that is the correct radio combo i would flash.

and just so you know radios are one of the few things that cannot be backed up by a nandroid backup nor can it be wiped. it will stay until you flash another one. please read this: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html. now do not let the warnings scare you. i just want you to know what you are getting into before you flash the radios.

also make sure that you have at least one nandroid backup with your wimax keys backed up.

Awesome, congrats!

PS. MikG 2.55 is out :p
v2.55:
Updated Superuser
Patched up all the smali jar files to not track any data (huge thanks to treve for his guide that showed me what i missed in the past)
Rebuilt all the odex files which should now be a lil smaller.
Removed Calks extra kernel profiles etc. to make sure all other kernels wont have issues with it.
I recommend switching to this version just because indeed your personal info is more safe and it seems like speed improved on 3g and overall in general due to less actions running in the background.
I did fully wipe... u guys can feel free to try without.

what phone do you have? are you sure that is the correct software version? so HTC pushed two software updates since gingerbread. we had the official gingerbread ota (software is 4.22.651.2) then we had the maintenance ota (software version 4.24.651.1). the previous ota was froyo and that was 3.70.651.1.

so your software does not match. go to phone settings/about phone/software info.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back, I didn't have internet at home and didn't want to load site on my phone. :p

I have an HTC Evo 4G, bought August 2010.

This is what it says on my About Phone / Software Information (exactly as shown):

Android version
2.3.3

Baseband version
2.15.00.11.19

Kernel version
2.6.35.10-g4e39384

Build number

Ok, SOOooooooo...

I only need to wipe everything except the SD Card, Flash Superwipe, Flash MikG 2.55 and reinstall everything, right? I don't need to do anything to my SD card, do I? Won't 2.55 pick up where 2.53 was as far as using the partitions for Darktremor?

Get rid of the superwipe..no need man. Waste of time. Just wipe all in Amon RA except SD card, and actually mik said you could try to just wipe cache and dalvik and flash, you might get lucky. Make a nandroid, obviously, if you are going to do that and if it bugs out on you, just wipe all and flash 2.55.

So no, you won't need to wipe your sd card.

And yes a2sd should pick up where it left off, it never hurts to do an a2sd reinstall in terminal after you flash.

ok so you have the initial gingerbread ota. there have been two others after the one you have. all you really need to do is flash a 4.53.651.1 rom to get updated. there is a stock version or there are a bunch of 4.53 roms that have the bloatware removed. just go to the rom/kernel sticky if this forum to go and get them. or you can try some of the other roms out there. try mikg2.55 (just came out).it is a very good rom and very fast and stable. it has sense 2.1 and sense 3.0.

What about SD EXT? Isn't that part of the A2SD?
What about .android secure? What is that anyway?

I'm not clear about the a2sd reinstall. Darktremor is already part of MikG so. Can you explain that to me?
(Today's "EVO Addiction School of Instruction Lesson" YES!!!)

Thanks in advance!!!
