Root Reception any better with CM7 ?

First thing's first - I can honestly say I love this phone. I've had it for almost 2 months now and have never had a complaint... Sure, the signal doesn't always look good on the bars, but I've yet to drop a call and reception has always been good .... I thought...

Two days ago I noticed that under the battery consumption it showed that I was without signal 92% of the day while in the office. I had never been told that anyone was unable to get me on the cell until I asked around after that. Slews of people said they call me but it always rolls to voicemail.

I did at least 2 dozen test calls yesterday while at the office and what I'd say that it was alarming at best when only two of those calls actually rang through.

When I got home I watched the signal meter closely and reset the % of time without signal by fully charging the battery. At home I have 3 bars consistently. Come 9PM, which was about 3 hours off the charger, I was without signal 58% of the time. Again, I asked around to my usual callers - four people had tried to call me and all went to voicemail. I severely questioned that, until I called my voicemail and each of them had left messages - and I had not received a voicemail waiting indicator.

SO...

All of that having been said - is it any better with CM7 ? The phone is rooted and ready to play, but I am hesitant to install a pre-beta build on the phone when I depend on it for work.

Thanks so much for any feedback!

I personally have seen no change, but reception has always been average for me so I never really paid attention to how many bars I had in different places, but don't just take this from me. My guess is that some people will have better reception, some it with stay the same, and others with get worse reception. You can always just try it, backup with recovery and flash it. Theres always risk, but not really much. Its like doing a dangerous sport, there's always a risk of hurting yourself.

I'm definitely no stranger to flashing, but this is the first time I've had to rely on my personal phone for work purposes too.

Ugh - maybe I'll try it this weekend when I have the time to monitor the phone as well as getting all of my apps reinstalled/reconfigured on it.

Well, What I have noticed with punkmaxx's black rom (prob CM7 too) is the I get more bars then i did on stock, at school I was lucky to get a solid 2 bars and the norm was 0-1 bar indoors...

I dont know if thats just me or if the rom just fixes the bars display...

But I now get two solid bars.... the two bars that I'm using to send you this message...

Thats my thought of the ROMs...

Good Luck

I do not believe that the CM7 ROM (and probably not any of the others) has made any changes in regards to the radio code that would have any bearing on your reception. I don't even think you can do this, besides changing the prl. You will get the reception you get regardless. A different ROM won't change it. The number of bars showing doesn't necessarily mean much, go into the settings and look at the actual signal you are getting to see what it really is.

The radio code is in the boot partition; it's not something that CM7 is going to impact at all.

This much I do know - Wifi, when on, apparently cross-interferes with 3g cell. You don't notice it when connected on Wifi of course, but if Wifi is on and you're NOT connected it can and frequently will knock your data down to 1x.

I learned something new today! I wouldn't say it is "better". It never has been "bad."

I will say that it doesn't knock to 1X when I'm using my GPS though.

yeah and plus on the intercept and ov you had your 100% signal divided out amongst 6 bars, and on the triumph it only has four to divide out 100% of the signal to. So if you have one bar on the triumph you may have had one or two on the intercept or ov.

But yeah using gps sometimes it will knock my data down to 1x is i dont have a very good signal. I would imagine both wifi and gps radios could interfere greatly with the cell radio!

No signal is no signal...

The data drop problems do not kill the signal itself, and at least SMS go through when it's in that state. I can probably fix the data drop problem if I can come up with a solid programmatic way to recognize that it happened and then cycle the data connection itself, but I can't do anything for "no signal at all."

As another guy mentioned, don't rely on the signal bars to determine whether you're getting good signal or not. I've seen the same signal strength give me anywhere from 0 to 2 bars. In CM7 I just have it set to show me the signal strength instead of bars, and, no I haven't noticed any change. And if you don't know anything about dBm, google it
