Is the G1-Android a Device for me?

Hello,

I had a good look at the Android.
I tried the Emulator. But a couple of things are still a bit unclear to me.

First, is the Cupcake Released or not? Or better yet. Can I use my Bluetooth headset for AD2P?
Second, can I compile and Run C Programs for my G1? Or do I HAVE to use Java?
Third, I heard this Battery is Horrid. How long can you walk about without doing calls? And what if I would use it for a MP3 Player? So Bluetooth would be on all the time. Aswell as the MediaPlayer.

I have a HTC S710 right now.

So, can somebody maybe tell me this?
I want this to be done by the Official ways. Not the Hacked things.

I hope somebody can explain / tell em about this.

Cupcake is a private development branch so we'll never 'get' cupcake, we'll only get cool features from cupcake. Other than that, I refuse to answer any of your other questions because they can be researched quite simply.

You'll understand it a lot better too if you do the research, rather than me answering yes or no. Besides that, people post threads like this all day long and there's just nothing exciting about repeating ourselves all day long.

Go look it up, if you can't find what you're looking for, then, the G1 isn't for you.

I did look it up before.. So I am going to put down what I found and then I wonder to hear from somebody who has an Android.
I heared the battery is crap and cant last more then half a day. I read it can do 12 hours. Thats why I asked. About the C Compiling the same thing. I read you can do it. I heard its a big pain in the ass.
The info about the Cupcake is really Good. But, how will we get those functions? Since AD2P will be in Cupcake asfar as I know. So I need to get those functions. I heard and read its a firmware update and its really dangerous. Though I doubt it is.
Thats again, why I asked.

Everything you've heard is pretty accurate, now it's just up to you if you're capable of managing it or not. I use my phone all day long so I wouldn't be able to survive if I wasn't able to charge my phone throughout the day.

If I'm not mistaking, AD2P is coming in the Android 1.5 update, from the Cupcake development branch.

Ah, so a big nono to C =P better start learning java then. Maybe write a C compiler in Java.. (that kinda beats the point) Ah, so if I would jsut hit update and my version number would reach 1.5 I can use AD2P? Or am I wrong AGAIN? XD
And, the charcing thing is kinda a big bummer. But come to think of it. The times that I am out of the house 18~20 hours in a day. Are Festivals and other things that would me to require to buy a more Solid Phone.

I had some issue with the battery life. However, I upgraded to a 1700 mA battery, and did a few tweaks, and now I've no issue @ all. The G1 isn't perfect, but it's a damn solid handset.

It's worth a look.. imo.

Do you mind me asking what kind of Tweaks they are?
Since with my last phone I kinda feel like doing a mis-buy sometimes since loads of things I heard where all Proof-of-Concept and not workable..

There's a few things you can do to make your battery last you as long as possible. There's an app called Power Manager for 99 cents. It gives you the ability to automatically change the settings on the phone based on how much battery power you have.

For example, if the battery drops below 50%. you can have it disable wifi, gps, and have it dim the screen to as low as you can handle. Or, when it's plugged into a USB chord you can have wifi and gps turned on automatically. You see?

You can get the Close Everything application, which does it's best to close background applications which could save on the battery but not necessarily.

There's plenty of things you will find to help maintain battery life, if you purchase the G1 you will definitely become a fan of these tweaks.

Most of us long term users, have found that the "Power Manager" can use more power than it saves ... I used it from the start ... had stopped using it when the app's Dev did the Backdoor-Pay-Upgrade ... and have since remove it and dont miss it at all ...

Exactly, I opted for a double thickness battery that lasts more than 24hrs under heavy use ...

The only other major flaw in my opinion is the low phone memory (72MB) but I rooted my phone and installed all of my apps to my SD card so I don't really use barely any phone memory. The swapper program is another great temporary fix to this issue. It borrows part of your SD card and uses it as memory (as I understand). My only other complaint about the phone is that there is no horizontal keyboard that has the corrective text that was included on the vertical keyboard in the 1.5 update. However i'm sure chomp or another app will hopefully include this in their sms apps.

Actually, I have rooted JF1.5 and the softkeyboard has a row of words I can choose as I'm typing them, it also corrects my typos and adds puncuation. Is this what you're talking about?

I'm coming in at the end of a discussion but let me add my two bits and some questions.

The new "cupcake" update is now active and being distributed to android users as we speak!

Someone above mentioned getting a better battery. May I ask where you purchased it and it it makes the phone any more bulky or heavy?

I really enjoy my G1 but also recognize it as the very first phone to be developed on an awesome platform.

I don't know where they purchased their battery but you can find an extensive list of batteries on eBay: g1 extended battery, Cell Phones PDAs, Computers Networking items on eBay.com

Find one you like on eBay, and then search for it through Google. Those are your best chances, I'd suspect. I'm positive some of them make the phone even thicker and some come with a battery cover fit for this.
