Ok, you need to help us help you... What procedures have you tried? What firmware are you using? what went wrong when you attempted root? There are a lot of possibilities here, and unless you get a little more specific, we won't know what or where to point you (to.)

If you have updated to gingerbread, This is where you need to start... http://androidforums.com/evo-shift-...o-shift-gingerbread-root-hboot-downgrade.html

Give us a walkthrough on what you tried, and I bet someone can help you figure it out!

Something tells me she picked up where barberboy left off.

On a serious note, so long as you can follow instructuions the downgrade to 2.2 was self-explanatory. I have never rooted a phone and was able to accomplish it on the first try. The root instructions are anything but vague. Ensure you follow the instructions step by step and verbatim and you cannot go wrong. I can understand people's frustrations when an individual asks for help and does not fully explain the problem.

I have a feeling that she missed something simple like enabling usb debugging under Applications when configuring Settings.

I tried ADB and SDK which would let me get to su and be done. Then I tried Shift Root and Recovery which wouldn't recognize my device when hooked up. Ok, so I'm going to attempt the Gingerbread thing. I am not good with downgrading. Do you need to root before you get Super User? I'm so sorry I'm so new at this!

ADB and the sdk are the tools you use to gain root. They are not root methods themselves. You also need to have HTC sync installed on your pc in order for your comp to recognize the phone when connected. (really only for the drivers...) Other than that you just need to follow the directions for downgrading your hboot to the 2.2 version, then follow the directions for rooting the shift with android 2.2. Which can be found at the top of the all things root forum, here;

EVO Shift - All Things Root - Android Forums

After you get a little more familiar with this place, I am going to move your thread over there, where it belongs...;)
